“She did look like a beautiful young man.” Cleo Rocos recalls Princess of Wales’ night out at a gay bar with Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett

Graham Robson February 8, 2025

Cleo Rocos has shared an anecdote about the Princess of Wales‘ night out at a gay bar with Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett in her memoir, Power Of Positive Drinking.

Rocos, who starred alongside Everett on The Kenny Everett Television Show, remembers that for one night only, Diana dressed up as a man to enjoy a night out at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern with Queen frontman Mercury and Everett.

She explained how the group spent the evening drinking champagne at Everett’s house watching Golden Girls, adding their own “naughtier storyline” over the muted episodes. Between scenes, it was mentioned how Mercury and Everett were planning on visiting the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a gay bar in London that hosts weekly club nights and cabaret drag acts.

Not wanting to miss out, Diana shared her desire to join them – but knowing her position, she knew this might not be possible. However, Mercury suggested she wear a disguise so she could enjoy herself without having to worry about gaining controversial coverage in the press.

In “full mischief mode”, she agreed to Mercury’s notion to “let the girl have some fun” – and was soon dressed up as a “rather eccentrically dressed gay male model”. Speaking about her outfit, Rocos says: “She did look like a beautiful young man.”

Thanks to her disguise, Diana was able to enjoy a stress-free night out – and even managed to order drinks herself at the bar without being caught out. Rocos added: “We were nudging each other like naughty schoolchildren. Diana and Freddie were giggling… Once the transaction was completed, we looked at one another, united in our triumphant quest. We did it!”

The group only stayed at the bar for about 20 minutes – but it was enough for Diana to enjoy a change of scenery.

Commenting on her iconic night out, one impressed Reddit user said: “I love her and I love that man. So awesome.” Another user added: “I was having a rubbish day until I read this. This was great. Thank you.” And a third user said: “To be honest, this totally sounds like something Freddie and Kenny would pull off.”

Rocos’ revelations come ahead of the broadcast of the Netflix drama Spencer, which stars Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana.
