Graham Robson April 19, 2023

Amidst increasing hostility faced by the LGBTQ+ community worldwide, the sixth edition of the Pride in Education conference is set to make a “powerful impact” when it returns over Zoom on Saturday, May 20 from 9am.

This free online event will feature 30 influential speakers across 20 sessions, including Nancy Kelley, Chief Executive at StonewallMatt Garvey, CEO at Diversity Role ModelsAmy Ashenden, Interim CEO at Just Like Us; and Sue Sanders, founder of LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK and Chair of Schools Out.

Each speaker will  delve into crucial topics, such as inclusive LGBTQ+ networks in higher education, supporting wellbeing and self-care, best practices for disability and LGBTQ+ inclusion, and fostering better understanding of diverse identities.

Organisers of the event say: “Their contributions are invaluable in advancing our collective understanding of equity and inclusion and promoting mental health and wellbeing for LGBTQ+ individuals in all their diversity.

“In recent years, LGBTQ+ rights have been rolled back and anti-trans rhetoric has reached alarming levels in the UK, while discriminatory bills in Uganda and the US threaten the identities of LGBTQ+ individuals.”

This year’s conference brings together leaders from LGBTQ+ organisations worldwide, including key voices from Australia to the US, as well as committee members from Cuba, France, Italy, and Uganda who are involved in LGBTQ+ History Months.

Laïla El-Métoui, founder of Pride in Education, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting our sixth conference to offer knowledge and skills to educators and professionals who are committed to creating more inclusive and diverse spaces for all.”

Over 5,000 attendees have attended past conferences, making pledges to support LGBTQ+ lives in education and empowering themselves to drive real change in their organisations.

“In recent years, LGBTQ+ rights have been rolled back and anti-trans rhetoric has reached alarming levels in the UK, while discriminatory bills in Uganda and the US threaten the identities of LGBTQ+ individuals.”

Organisers add: “Join the global movement for queer education and be part of the change towards a more inclusive and diverse educational landscape.

“Pride in Education not only highlights important issues around diversity within the sector, but offers practical solutions and approaches for educators to implement within their work.”
