Polish priest dismissed by Vatican following “drug-fuelled gay sex party”

A Polish priest who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for hosting a “drug-fuelled gay sex party” has been dismissed by the Vatican.

The incident took place in August 2023 in the south of Poland. According to local media the men took potency pills and drank alcohol before one of the guests lost consciousness and his friend called an ambulance. The priest, known only as Tomasz Z, prevented the paramedics from entering his apartment until police intervened.

In April 2024, Tomasz Z was handed an 18-month prison sentence after being found guilty of four charges.

One of the charges against the priest, under Polish privacy law, related to “taking advantage of the helplessness of another person and causing them to have sexual intercourse or submit to a sexual act”.

The other charges pertained to failing to provide help to a person whose life and health were in danger, and the supply of psychoactive and psychotropic substances.

After the media first reported on the incident in September 2023, the local diocese removed Tomasz Z from performing all church functions. Following its own investigation, the curia found that the priest had “committed a very serious violation of moral norms” and launched disciplinary proceedings.

The priest was also removed as editor of a local branch of Niedziela, a weekly news magazine published by the Catholic church.
