Kennedy Center “abruptly cancels” performance from Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC

Graham Robson February 18, 2025

A performance from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC in the United States on May 21 has been pulled from the programme of events at the Kennedy Center in the capital city.

The gay men’s chorus was set to perform at this year’s World Pride Washington DC, which brings together a programme of events to “celebrate, educate, support and inspire”.

Writing on social media, Jeffrey Weisner said: “We were scheduled to perform for the first time with Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington on May 21 as part of WorldPride in Washington DC. The concert was abruptly cancelled without explanation and removed from the KC website. However, they forgot to scrub it from the search engine.

“I know about this only because my husband Silvio is in the Chorus and was there when they were informed.

“This post is for any LGBT folks who think that the Trump admin isn’t targeting our entire community. Expect moves to remove us from anti-discrimination laws, plus lawsuits aimed at giving the Supreme Court the chance to overturn decisions that gave us rights.”

Earlier this month, members of creative industries announced they are cancelling shows and cutting ties with the performing arts centre after Trump took over as the venue’s chairman and dismissed board members who he says do not share his arts and culture “vision”.

In a follow up post, Lara Webber added: “For anyone thinking that the targeting of and takeover of the Kennedy Center doesn’t apply to you, or only affects certain performances, realise that this Trump action, silently sanctioned by the congressional majorities, signals the lengths to which our current government will go to snuff out whole populations and groups.

“Human expression itself has been targeted. We cannot stand for this, just as we cannot stand for mass deportation, deletion of institutions, DOGE in our data, or any of it. Let’s build a MASSIVE loving chorus to sing truth and protect our fellow citizens. Where do I sign up?”
