An inquest into the death of a Welsh drag queen with a “heart of gold” has opened in Wales.

Gareth Stephenson, who performed as Dynasty Blake, died after his car collided with a lorry near Llanidloes, Wales in February 2025.

Gareth’s family said at the time: “Words can’t describe how much pain this devastating loss has caused our family and will, undoubtedly, cause the people that Gareth has met throughout his life.”

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Gareth died at the scene of the crash.

Kiki Babs, who starred on stage alongside Gareth before his death, posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, saying: “Goodbye was too soon, we shall see each other again someday on stage.

“You might have to wait a while though. Take care Dynasty Blake (Gareth Stephenson). You was a pain in the a** at times but you always had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.”

Aberystwyth’s LGBTQ+ community paid tribute to Gareth as someone who had a “heart of gold and would do anything for anyone”.

Gareth’s family also paid an emotional tribute following his death, saying that he “lit up every room with his infectiously sunny smile” and was remembered as a man who had a big impact on so many people.

Coroner Patricia Morgan opened and adjourned the inquest while police could continue with their investigation into the circumstances leading to Mr Stephenson’s death. She added that once the investigation is completed and providing that are no criminal proceedings, a final inquest will be held on a date that is yet to be confirmed.

The coroner concluded: “At this stage however I open and adjourn the inquest touching the death of Gareth Roy Stephenson and I take the opportunity to express my condolences to his family and friends.”
