Queer The Marly, a group of queer people who have come together to protect the building fondly known by many as ‘The Marly’, is seeking donations for a mortgage deposit so they can turn the venue into a permanent queer cultural centre, owned by and for the LGBTQ+ community.
For over 60 years, the Marlborough Pub and Little Theatre — affectionately known as ‘The Marly’ — has been a cornerstone of Brighton’s LGBTQ+ life. From hosting Gay Liberation Front meetings in the 1970s, to being a hub for lesbian organising in the 90s, to helping launch the UK’s first Trans Pride in 2013.
Queer The Marly say: “We campaigned in 2021, got it protected as an Asset of Community Value, and now we have an opportunity to buy the building!
“We have set up a Community Interest Company (CIC) and need to raise £400,000 for a deposit.
“Today it’s trading as The Actors but remains an integral part of Brighton’s queer history and present. Now the landlord is selling we want to make sure it continues to be a space for the community into the future.”
