Ukuleles tune-up to Paddle Round the Pier

Get on board the Ukulele Stage at The Paddle Round the Pier Beach Festival on July 4 & 5.

Paddle Round the Pier, Ukulele stage

Nicola Bloom of Ucanukulele presents the Paddle Ukulele Stage for the fourth year running and promises to showcase a strum-tastic range of four-stringed talent over the weekend.

Nicola says: “There are many reasons I organize this event but it comes down to the fact that ukulele players are some of the friendliest people around – It’s a huge team effort for a great cause.”

The rise in popularity of this plucky little instrument shows no sign of stopping  as sales of Ukuleles in Britain have reportedly doubled to around 250,000 a year since 2010 with a growing number of ukulele jam groups across Sussex to choose from.

Ukulele’s at dawn

Local groups playing the Ukulele Stage carry some entertaining names including WUKULELE (Worthing Ukulele Group), BAD UKES (Brighton After Dark Ukulele Group) and LUSH (Lovely Ukulele Strummers of Hove) which all adds to the fun of the occasion.

Other acts over the weekend include vintage songstress Tricity Vogue, Elvis aficionado Lady Ukulele, children’s singer songwriter Al Start, and ‘Meriel’s Secret’

Headlining for the first time is the ever-popular Brighton duo ‘DB UKES’ who have been shaking up the ukulele scene with their original instrumental compositions.

And it’s not all about the music either. The Ukulele Stage boasts some innovative pieces of original artwork including a giant ALOHA installation made entirely out of vintage ukulele LP covers. And Tiki god sculptures by local artist Tark Mills.
