Scene from the Sofa – Five minutes with… Ari Wilde

Graham Robson May 29, 2020

Artist, actor and musician Ari Wilde is basically the non-binary version of Wei Wuxian. Graham Robson caught up with the continental creative to find out what they’ve been up to in lockdown and their plans for the future!

Hey Ari, tell us a bit about yourself…

My name is Ari and I am 23 years old. I am a non-binary musician, songwriter, writer and actor.

How have you been spending your time during lockdown?

I’m mostly writing my books (I’m working on two of them right now) and playing new songs. I try to write something new every day. I’m also trying to do as much physical activity as I can.

Has it been hard to adjust to working from home?

Since I currently live in a country where it’s not easy to get recognised as an artist and I don’t know other artists in my area, I have always pretty much worked online. So, working from home is something I used to do even before the lockdown.

What’s been the biggest impact to your creative output?

While writing my books and my songs I try to be inspired by what happens in my everyday life. My biggest source of inspiration are my dreams, my emotions and last but not least what is happening in the world and how it affects me.

Have you been watching much online?

I don’t particularly like social networks or being online, but I use my social networks profiles as a platform where I can share my work and hear the feedback of my followers. I try not to spend too much time online, though.

How is lockdown affecting the trans community?

I think lockdown is affecting the trans community especially when it comes to visibility. And it’s hard not being able to spend time together to share what we’re working on. Every one of my trans friends is still working on their projects, though, and I wish them the best. I’m positive when the lockdown is over, everything will be back to normal.

What are your plans for when this is all over?

I had been planning for a few years to move to the UK. When the lockdown is over I’m pretty positive I’ll be able to publish (or self publish) my books and I’ll go back earning money to be able to move. I am not exactly sure when that will be, but I hope it will be soon.

Any tips to keep us busy?

I have many ways to keep busy during the day. Physical activity, for starters. Then, I would suggest if you started working on any project before the lockdown to try and get it done. Working on my artistic projects takes up most of my days and it makes me relaxed because it gives me less time to focus on the bad things. I would also suggest finding something you’re interested in and learning more about it. For example, I am very interested in the Jewish culture and in Judaism and I’m reading a book about Jewish legends, a few chapters a day.

Do you have any work you’d like to share?

I haven’t posted my music online yet, but I’m positive I will soon. For now I have posted my books, Glitter Kids and The Winter Family on Wattpad but I plan on publishing them. If you are interested in my songwriting, I have an account on a website called PremiumLyrics where I sell my songs.

Any words of wisdom to help us through?

Yes. During these difficult times, be supportive to those who love you and whom you love. Don’t be afraid to show your true self and keep doing what you love. It will be worth it in the end.
