PREVIEW: ‘La Traviata’: Congress Theatre Eastbourne

La Traviata, one of Verdi’s most popular operas, comes to Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre in February with a spectacular traditional production boasting a stellar international cast.

THE OPERA is Verdi’s interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th century, La Dame aux Camelias. Based on a true story, it tells of the passionate loves and life of the consumptive courtesan, Violetta Valery.

La Traviata will be performed by handpicked international soloists alongside the full Chisinau National Opera and National Philharmonic Orchestra and chorus, who are the National Company of Moldova.

It features critically acclaimed international soloists well-known by British audiences – Ruslan Zinevych, Elena Dee, Vladimir Dragos, Iurie Maimescu and Zarui Vardanean. This production also introduces to audiences, international Spanish tenor Giorgi Meladze as Alfredo and Alyona Kistenyova from the Ukrainian national Opera of Odessa as Violetta.

The sumptuous sets and costumes are designed by the renowned Ukrainian designer Nadia Shvets from the National Ukrainian opera of Kharkiv.

La Traviata will be sung in Italian with English surtitles. Surtitles provide an unobtrusive translation of the libretto (lyrics) from Italian into English. They are similar to the subtitles you see on television and help you to follow the story.

The opera will be staged by award-winning producer Ellen Kent, who was also behind the productions of Madama Butterfly and Rigoletto recently performed at the Congress Theatre.
