PREVIEW: Brighton Festival: Classical Spectacular

April 10, 2016

Best of British comes to Brighton!

WEB.600

Popular classics by some of our most celebrated British composers, conducted by Peter Farrant and featuring professional soloists and instrumentalists, can be experienced amidst the stunning surroundings of St Bartholomew’s Church in Brighton during the Brighton Festival Fringe in May.

Works will include Walton’s wonderfully exuberant Crown Imperial, Elgar’s deeply moving Nimrod and Bob Chilcott’s uplifting and inspirational Requiem – regarded by many as equal to Fauré’s Requiem.

Bob Chilcott, described by The Observer as “a contemporary hero of British Choral Music”, has become one of the most widely performed living composers of choral music in the world today. This celebratory concert marks his tremendous achievements by featuring both his Jubilate and Requiem.

Scottish soprano, Catriona Hewitson received her undergraduate training at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). She is now a Royal College of Music (RCM) scholar studying under Janis Kelly, supported by the Emma Rose Memorial Award, Josephine Baker Trust, Hope Scott Trust, James Caird Travelling Fund, Cross Trust and PS. She won several prizes while at the RNCM and at the RCM she came second in the Lies Askonas Competition and was awarded the Cuthbert Smith Prize.

Her opera highlights include Sophie (Werther, English Touring Opera – ETO), Yniold (Pelléas et Mélisande, ETO), Emmie (Albert Herring, RCM), Ida (Die Fledermaus, RCM), Amore (Orfeo e Euridice, RNCM) and First Young Tree (Paul Bunyan, British Youth Opera).

Catriona recently debuted at St Martin-inthe-Fields (Brandenberg Sinfonia), the Bridgewater Hall (Szymnovski Stabat Mater) and toured with the Ulster Orchestra. Later this year she will be performing a recital as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and returning to St Martin-in-the-Fields.

Sussex born Music Director, Peter Farrant, who for over 20 years has successfully promoted new and unusual works alongside mainstream repertoire in the UK and overseas, said recently, “It is a joy to present these wonderful works as part of the largest arts festival in England and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world. Brighton is an iconic city with unique cultural heritage.  I would strongly urge everyone to take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity”.
