Olly Alexander says “it’s time I do something new” after announcing he has left his record label

Graham Robson March 25, 2025

Award-winning singer, songwriter and BAFTA-nominated actor Olly Alexander has confirmed that he has left his record label a month after releasing his critically acclaimed solo album Polari.

The Years & Years singer, who signed with the label in 2014, went solo following the departure of bandmates Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkmen.

Looking ahead, Olly said the departure from his label is “for the best” and is excited to “do something new” and release music again in the future.

Writing on Instagram, Olly said: “They aren’t dropping me, they just aren’t renewing my contract.

“It’s okay and honestly for the best. I’ve been on a pretty terrible deal for ten years — it’s time I do something new.

“But I’ll still make music in the future.”

Olly, who was the UK’s Eurovision entrant in 2024, had huge success with Years & Years’ debut album, Communion, which featured hits King, Shine, Desire and Eyes Shut.

In 2021, Olly moved into acting with the starring role in Russell T Davies’ hit Channel 4 drama, It’s A Sin.

In February, Olly interrupted a busy schedule to visit Brighton-based HIV charity the Sussex Beacon.

Having launched his debut solo album Polari the day before, Olly met with a number of staff and service users at the Beacon to find out more about the work done by the charity.

Olly’s visit coincided with the fourth anniversary of the screening of the hit Channel 4 series It’s A Sin, starring Olly and featuring Jill Nalder, who is a patron of the Sussex Beacon. Olly’s Up Close and Polari tour will hit the road across the UK and Europe this spring. For details and to book tickets, CLICK HERE

Olly said at the time: “It was so moving and inspiring to visit the Sussex Beacon and learn about the vital work the staff are doing. I loved meeting some of the service users who were so open and generous with sharing their journeys and how crucial the centre is for them. I can’t wait to visit again and I’m excited to work together in the future.”
