Let the Good Times Roll – 25 Years of Komedia: 1994 – 2019

Komedia celebrate 25 years presenting some of the biggest comics in the business to a Brighton audience.

ON May 1, 1994, the directors of Umbrella Theatre, Colin Granger, Marina Kobler, and David Lavender, opened a new venue called Komedia, in a converted former billiard hall in Kemptown, Brighton.

They modelled the venue on the cabaret theatres they had seen while touring with Umbrella in cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Berlin; small informal welcoming venues that offered people from all walks of life a place to enjoy comedy, cabaret, and music whilst having a meal and a drink.

There were no venues like these in the UK in the early nineties and Colin, Marina, and David wanted Komedia to be the first.

From the very beginning, Komedia’s cabaret theatre format was a huge success both with audiences and performers and in the venue’s first season brilliant new talent such as Graham Norton, Al Murray, Mel and Sue and Omid Djalili were the first to step on its stage.

In 1998 Colin, Marina and David were able to move their venue to larger premises in the centre of Brighton, their choice being Jubilee Shopping Hall (a former Tesco supermarket) on Gardner Street in the North Laines.

Krater Comedy Club was born in June 1999 after the ‘crater like’ basement area was transformed into a cabaret space and the larger venue quickly attracted established and up-and-coming comedy and music acts including; Catherine Tate, Stewart Lee, Ross Noble, Harry Hill, The Mighty Boosh, Johnny Vegas, Dave Gorman, Flight of the Conchords, Jimmy Carr, KT Tunstall, The XX, Kate Nash, Anna Calvi, Ghostpoet, Bonobo, The Magic Numbers, Bat for Lashes, Foals, Mumford and Sons and even Sia.

Over the years, when other UK arts centres were closing because of cuts in public funding and the recession, Colin, Marina and David knew that for Komedia to remain independent and in control of its own destiny, the venue had to be self-sufficient and sustainable.

They developed a business model where highly successful, profitable, regular shows such as the Krater Comedy Club, cross-subsidised the work of up-and-coming artists, spoken world and children’s events.

Today, Colin, Marina and David are proud that with the help of the venue’s loyal and talented staff and management team that Komedia continues to thrive and programme an amazingly varied range of entertainment, as they say “Our aim when we opened Komedia in May 1994 was to create an independent and self-supporting venue that offers a wide choice of live entertainment, good service, and welcomes people from all walks of life. 25 years later, we are proud that with the help of all our staff this aim has been achieved, and that Komedia will continue to have this vision at its heart – let the good times roll!”

Komedia’s aim today remains the same as 25 years ago – to offer customers a warm welcome, a wide choice of live entertainment, good service, bars and food, so that everyone with an appetite for life can enjoy a good night out.

Mental Health awareness takes centre stage at Northern Pride

A musical play about the hidden struggles of mental illness will reach a larger audience, thanks to support from a leading North East LGBT+ charity.

NORTHERN Pride, which organises the annual Northern Pride Festival, has partnered with the team behind My Mental Breakdown: A Musical, to bring the production to Northern Stage, at Barras Bridge, Newcastle.

The show will take place during Mental Health Awareness Week on May 18, with the evening forming a part of the wider Northern Pride Festival programme of events.

Written by Max Kingdom, founder of the Canny Fringe Festival, the semi-autobiographical production follows an LGBT+ couple affected by suicide and aims to highlight the fact that mental health issues are not always noticeable.

The show first opened at The Exchange, at North Shields, in March and the partnership aims to give the production the opportunity to reach a wider audience at a larger venue.

Ste Dunn, chair of Northern Pride, believes the show will strike a chord with audiences.

“The team have taken a very difficult, but incredibly important, subject matter and created an amazing play which is a really emotional experience to watch,” said Ste.

“Although the stigma surrounding mental health is lifting, many people still find it a difficult subject to address and productions like this are helping to create a discussion around it.

“We are really pleased we have been able to have a part in getting the play to a wider audience and I hope people will make the effort to go and see what Max and the team have put together.”

The production is one of a number of satellite events organised by Northern Pride in the lead up to the Northern Pride Festival weekend, which takes place from July 19 to 21.

The show’s producer, Emily Fay Palmer-Giles, said: “The entire team is massively excited to see the production return with the help of Northern Pride.

“The show was a huge success the first time around and we’ve had lots of messages from people who are grateful to see representation of mental illness, or who have gained more of an understanding of what it can be like to live with it.

“It’s a powerful show with a very strong message and we’re so grateful to have this support and be working alongside a fantastic charity.”

The Northern Pride Festival will take place across two locations this year, with the Festival Arena at the Town Moor hosting the main stage and fun fair, and the Community Village taking place at Exhibition Park with the Curious Arts Stage, Health and Wellbeing Zone, Rainbow Village and much more.

Weather Girls added to Stockholm Pride line-up

The Weather Girls
The Weather Girls

This summer, it’s going to rain men and other hit songs from the legendary Weather Girls at Stockholm Pride, hallelujah!

EVERYONE remembers the monster hit from the mid-80s when two neon-dressed women danced among raining men, ripped with open trench coats.

Today, the legacy of the group is carried on by Dynelle Rhodes, daughter of the original member Izora Armstead. Since Izora passed away in 2004, Dynelle and Dorrey Lin Lyles, who had been active in the group in previous years, keeps alive the memory of the 80s Icons..

Booking this act was a no brainer for Stockholm Pride stage producer Gunn Lundemo, who said: “I played the set before them on the main stage at Vienna Pride in 2018. At once I knew that I wanted to book them in some context in the future, now came the perfect opportunity, their show is amazing!”

The Weather Girls will mix their own songs with the hits of other icons such as, The Supremes, Aretha Fraklin and other divas.

They will be joining Pussy Riot, The Village People, Icona Pop and Melanie C on the main stage during Pride week events.

Stockholm Pride is the largest Pride festival in Scandinavia and takes place in Stockholm city center between July 29 and August 4, 2019.

Tickets cost around 55 euros full price and 40 euros reduced price for the whole week including all concerts, entrance to Pride Park and seminars in the Pride House.
