BRIGHTON FRINGE PREVIEW: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane McDonald?

A show celebrating a 20-year obsession with Wakefield’s number one export, the legendary Jane McDonald, cruises into the Brighton Fringe Festival.

WELCOME to the Brighton meeting of the self-help group Jane McDonald Anonymous. Let Grant McLachlan, the newly-elected leader of an elite group of Jane superfans called the Cruisettes, steer you through your 8-step voyage, from admitting to celebrating your obsession with everything that is Jane McDonald.

Grant McLachlan devised the show after he was filmed at his school for the Channel 5 show Jane & Friends.

Thanks to her award-winning Cruising with Jane McDonald series, she is at the top of her career, so this show will speak to anyone who feels that they need a bit of showtune sparkle, camp banter and Jane McDonald in their lives – and frankly, who doesn’t?

Grant is a lifelong member of the Jane McDonald fan club and is an out-and-proud superfan. While this is his debut Brighton Fringe show, he performed the show at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018 to Jane fans, old and new.

“There’s so much to commend about this debut…it will be exciting to see what McLachlan will offer as he grows in confidence as a performer.”….. The Wee Review, 2018.

Local CEOs raise over £9,000 for Mayors charity

Mayor’s Charity raises over £9,000 for four Brighton & Hove charities at CEO Spring Sleepout.

LAST Saturday, armed with only warm clothes and sleeping bags to protect them against the night, sixteen people took part in the Mayor of Brighton & Hove’s Charity CEO Spring Sleepout.

The event was raising money for four local charities: Off The Fence, Grace Eyre, Martlets and Rockinghorse.

Among those spending the night under the stars with the Mayor, Cllr Dee Simson were: Amelda Glackin (Martlets), Monica Harding (Off The Fence), Mark Ainsworth (Grace Eyre), Lucy Dawe (Lawton & Dawe), Kelly Coate & Jane Harvell (Sussex University), Andrew Stenning (Clearline Recruitment), Sam Simson, Tom Druitt (The Big Lemon), and Emily Mabbott (High Sheriff’s cadet),

Rob Reaks (Red7 Leisure), David Bell (Joe Public Marketing) and Nationwide Managers (George Street) helped raise £1,022 towards the final total.

Sleeping at the British Airways i360 isn’t quite the same as sleeping on the streets but it does give participants an opportunity to get an insight into the challenges faced by those sleeping rough on the streets of Brighton & Hove.

The participants got to experience how noisy it is to be on the sea front with people coming and going from nightclubs, fights and seagulls waking them at 3am.

The event started with a flight on the British Airways i360 and a bedtime story by local author, Peter James, reading the first chapter of his latest book.

Everyone survived the night and was rewarded with bacon butties from Buddies first thing in the morning.

Monica from Off The Fence said; “I cannot say it was a pleasant experience. It was tough! It was noisy, windy and uncomfortable. But we all pulled together. It is wonderful to see the support in the community for four great charities.”

Funds raised will be split evenly to support four local charities in Brighton & Hove working with the homeless, hospice care, sick children and learning disabilities.

11 year old braves the head shave for Martlets

Delilah McNulty, an 11-year-old fundraiser from Brighton, raises over £900 for Martlets by shaving off all her hair.

THE kind-hearted youngster said that she decided one day that she didn’t need her hair anymore and discussed with her mum, about having her head shaved in support of Martlets.

Delilah says; “I know that lots of people there need support. It made me feel good to know that I was helping people. As I got closer to the day, I started to feel quite scared – but when I got to the hairdressers I was excited. I even cut my own ponytail off, and then the hairdresser shaved off the rest.

“My friends at school didn’t believe that I was going to do it, so they were really shocked when I came into school the next day! People keep telling me how brave I am, but I don’t think so. It’s only hair and it will grow back – I don’t have cancer.  Some people are not so lucky.”

For others thinking about picking up the clippers Delilah had the following advice; “Don’t worry, it’s fun and your hair will grow back – just imagine how many people you are helping!”

Liz Davies from the hospice’s Fundraising team said; “Delilah is such an amazing young lady.  She might not think that she’s been particularly brave, but we think she is an inspirational role model for others. She has raised a tremendous amount of money for us with her selflessness and this will definitely make a real difference to the lives of local people and their families.

“If you have an idea for a fundraising event in aid of Martlets then please do get in touch.”

For further details about raising money for the hospice or events that you can take part in please telephone the Fundraising team on 01273 747455 or email fundraising@martlets.org.uk

Two critically ill kittens illustrate the dangers of buying online, warns cat charity.

BUYING cats or kittens from private sellers online is a risky business says Cats Protection after they were contacted by the owners of two very sick white kittens asking for help.

The charity’s Bridgend Adoption Centre in Wales recently took in Daffan and Dill who were sold for £360 the pair and advertised as being eight weeks old.

When the new owners got the kittens home, they quickly realised that something was wrong as they were still trying to suckle and had raging diarrhoea.

They took the kittens to the vet who advised them that they were in fact around five weeks old, had a huge burden of worms and one was slightly jaundiced.

The vet also warned them they might die so they called on Cats Protection’s Bridgend Adoption Centre for help.

“We were really shocked at how ill they were,” said Sue Dobbs, manager of the centre. “The little girl Daff was particularly bad as she was very cold and very lethargic. As well as diarrhoea, the kittens went on to develop flu and we soon discovered they were deaf too. It took four weeks and a lot of energy and money to get the kittens back to full health.”

To offer cats the same welfare protection as dogs, Cats Protection is urging the Government to consider regulating cat breeding so that potential buyers are able to go to a licensed cat breeder.

It welcomed the recently announced Welsh Government consultation considering how best to address issues related to cat breeding and selling and is also calling for an update to the law on selling cats to reflect the modern age – recognising that the majority of kittens and cats are now advertised for sale online.

It’s asking that this should include a ban on the commercial sale of kittens under eight weeks which could have prevented Daffan and Dill from being sold at such a young age.

“Our branches across Wales still regularly tell us harrowing stories of kittens bred and sold that are very sick,” said Madison Rogers, Advocacy & Government Relations Officer. “It’s vital that the breeding of cats is regulated and the law on selling cats in Wales is updated to avoid such tragedies.”

“By choosing to adopt, rather than going to a breeder, you are caring for a kitten that already needs support instead of bringing another one into the world,” said Madison. “It’s also beneficial for you because you’ll have peace of mind that your cat or kitten is a healthy pet.”

All cats and kittens adopted from Cats Protection are health-checked, wormed, vaccinated against cat flu and enteritis, neutered where appropriate and come with a free period of pet insurance.

This year Cats Protection’s cat care assistants – who help look after cats like Daffan and Dill at Bridgend Adoption Centre – are being funded thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, who have raised £404 million to-date for similar good causes.
