First long-acting HIV treatment injections pass trial

Injections, that could one day be an alternative to daily pills for people living with HIV, have been shown to be effective in maintaining viral suppression, bringing them one step closer to market.

RESULTS from ATLAS and FLAIR studies were presented last week at the 2019 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI).

Kat Smithson, Director of Policy and Campaigns, NAT (National AIDS Trust) said: “Constantly improving treatments for HIV have revolutionised the lives of people living with this condition. The potential for HIV to be successfully treated with an injection repeated every month, rather than pills taken every day, could be life-enhancing for many people. It will help with adherence to medication and allow people with HIV to get on with their lives.”

“Although we are some way off this treatment being available to patients, we are excited about the potential for this to improve life for people living with HIV.”

LECTURE: Like wine, humans can be better with age

A Brighton scientist who helped develop anti-ageing compounds based on those found in red wine and chocolate is to explain how close we are to alleviating and preventing old age degenerative diseases.

PROFESSOR Lizzy Ostler, the University of Brighton’s Professor of Chemical Biology and a member of the University of Brighton’s Centre for Stress and Age-Related Disease, is giving her inaugural lecture on March 20.

In her lecture Not aged by time Professor Ostler will explain how she has used her “distinctively cynical approach to research, education and curriculum design both to inspire students and to develop novel potential anti-degenerative drugs”. She will also explain how her research demonstrates that the alleviation and prevention of the consequences of ageing have “finally become realistic and achievable goals”.

She said: “We are on the cusp of a real breakthrough.”

Professor Ostler and her School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Science colleague Professor Richard Faragher, Professor of Biogerontology, discovered a way of rejuvenating ageing cells. Laboratory experiments showed cells not only looked physically younger but behaved more like young cells and start dividing. They have now designed a collection of new compounds related to those found both in “superfoods” and red wine to understand how this discovery can be used to help older people.

She said dangerously large quantities of wine would have to be consumed to produce the positive effects on cells but “that’s the beauty of chemistry – we can take natural products and we can redesign them so they are more effective, so they can get into the body more easily and we can reduce any side effects”.

The free lecture is at the University’s Huxley Theatre in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, starting 6.30pm.
