Romeo Gay App conducts worldwide safer sex survey

69,551 Gay Men Surveyed, 67% Say ‘Make PrEP Free’

FOR World AIDS Day on Saturday, December 1, Amsterdam based Gay dating app ROMEO held a worldwide survey among its members about safer sex to get a better idea of sexual behaviour and opinions about condoms, PrEP use, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The response was impressive with a total of 69,551 respondents answering the survey.

Knowledge about safer sex
The ROMEO survey showed that an amazing 88% of gay, bi males or trans members feel that they are well-informed about safer sex and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

PrEP use and availability
According to the ROMEO survey, only 16% of participants said that they use PrEP and 67% said that PrEP should be covered by national health agencies and/or other health insurance.

Among PrEP users, 91% indicated that they also are willing to use condoms.

Jens Schmidt Founder of ROMEO said: “The introduction of PrEP in 2012, a medication that prevents HIV infection, has been a game changer in the gay dating world. At the same time, there is a big discussion about its benefits and risks. With this survey we want to help to find answers.”

Major concern
Comments from participants indicate that the rise in the spread of STIs is a major concern.

The Results
Based on the survey results, ROMEO believes that PrEP will have a positive impact, especially for those who do not consistently use a condom.

Shrigley creates personalised prints for ‘Build Brighton Dome’ appeal

The Turner Prize-nominated visual artist David Shrigley has created a personalised artwork to help raise funds for the Brighton Dome’s refurbishment project.

THE artwork, Certificate of Human Status, features Shrigley’s distinctive satirical style and names the recipient as “a human being and a member of the human race”. The limited edition A4 prints have been screen printed by hand at The Private Press studio in Brighton and are available to buy online for £195 (plus delivery). Each print will be personalised, signed and numbered by the artist.

David Shrigley explained how he got involved: “As a Brighton resident, it was an honour to be the Guest Director at this year’s Brighton Festival and I had the opportunity to find out more about the exciting redevelopment of the Brighton Dome venues. I think it’s crucial that Brighton Dome is able to provide spaces to help support and nourish artists and their work.”

Proceeds from the sale of prints will go towards the Build Brighton Dome community appeal. The Grade One-listed Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, formerly the Prince Regent’s Riding House, is being restored to reveal previously hidden heritage features as well as provide increased capacity seating, a magnificent new viewing gallery and a creative space for artists to rehearse and develop work. Major improvements to the Studio Theatre – once a supper room – will include balcony seating, new bar facilities and a street level café opening out onto New Road.

Certificate of Human Status is a limited edition screen print of 250, priced at £195 (plus postage and packing) available only online from 10am, Tuesday, December 4.

Sir David Watson award relaunched

An awards scheme, founded by the University of Brighton in memory of its former Vice-Chancellor Sir David Watson, has been relaunched and is inviting applications from around the world.

THE Professor Sir David Watson Award for Community-University Partnerships  recognises the combined efforts of community and university partners working together towards making a difference to the lives of people in their shared community, and to “build a healthier, just and sustainable community”.

The scheme was launched last year when the award went to Cardiff University’s Community Gateway which works with residents and local organisations to help make the city’s Grangetown district an even better place to live and work by developing world-class research, teaching and volunteering opportunities which respond to residents’ ideas.

The Professor Sir David Watson Award scheme, the first of its kind, is supported by an international group of networks and leaders in the field including the Talloires Network, a global network of community-engaged universities that Sir David helped to build and lead.

Sponsors also include the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement, University of Winchester and Engagement Australia which helps develop best practice university-community engagement in Australia. Professor Budd Hall, the UNESCO co-chair for Community Based Research, is the Chair of the award Advisory Board.

Sir David, who died in February 2015, created the University of Brighton’s award-winning Community University Partnership Programme CUPP which has supported scores of partnership projects over the past 15 years. Each year hundreds of academics, students and community partners work together to produce benefits for the community whilst enriching teaching and research.

Dave Wolff, CUPP Director, officially relaunched the scheme at the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement in Edinburgh, said: “Sir David, who died in 2015, was principal of the University of Oxford’s Green Templeton College. He led Brighton to gaining university status in 1992 and continued as head of the institution for another 13 years, establishing CUPP in 2003

“His achievements are many but included within them are the profound leadership he offered in the establishment of the contemporary university’s role in society, particularly via partnerships with communities.

“Sir David said: ‘Community engagement from a university perspective often means taking a university back to the reasons for its founding. If we look carefully we will see nearly all institutions were put there to make life better for communities in terms of prosperity and social cohesion’.

“The award recognises the efforts of community and university partners working together for mutual benefit.  It has been run in the spirit of community university partnerships:  co-governed by a global range of colleagues from the university and community sectors, with the winner democratically chosen by individual donors.”

The award scheme, the first of its kind, last year attracted entries from around the UK and from countries abroad, including Pakistan and Canada.

Albion chief executive and deputy chairman, Paul Barber, said: “This is fantastic news for the football club and the wider Sussex community as a whole.

“Our stadium has a proven track record and a growing reputation for hosting some of the world’s biggest sporting events, and it is great that we will have the chance to do so once again.

“We will continue to work very closely with Sussex County FA and Brighton & Hove City Council, in supporting The FA with hosting such a prestigious tournament.”

Albion’s women’s football chair Michelle Walder said: “I am delighted for all concerned, and would like to congratulate The FA on their successful bid.

“This will greatly help to raise the profile of women’s football as a whole, and it will be fantastic to welcome some of the top female players in Europe to our stadium.”

Councillor Alan Robins, chair of the council’s tourism, development and culture committee, added: “We’re over the moon to hear the news – it’s a great early Christmas present.  It’s a fantastic boost for women’s football in the region and a great accolade for the city.

“As a host city we have a real opportunity to help raise the profile of women’s football locally and nationally.”

Sussex County FA chief executive, Ken Benham, said: “We’re delighted that some of the finest female players from across Europe will be showcasing their skills right here in Sussex.

“The tournament has the power to inspire and we hope it will encourage more people into the game.

“We have opportunities for all ages and abilities to get involved with football, so we’re really looking forward to the increased exposure the championships will bring to the local area.”

Brighton & Hove has hosted major sporting events before, including the Rugby World Cup in 2015 and in 2014 the city welcomed Stage 7 of the Tour of Britain bike race and the annual Brighton Marathon is the second largest in the UK.

The event will showcase the city to an international audience, supporting tourism and the local economy. In 2017, when England reached the semi-finals, the UEFA women’s Euro viewing figures reached a global audience of 165 million.
