Brighton’s Seafront Heritage – Looking towards the Future

Brighton Seafront Heritage Trust receive £45,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for their Operational and Sustainability Development plans.

THE Resilient Heritage grant will cover around 90% of the cost of the Trust’s plan to begin to put the Fishing Quarter on a sustainable, and flourishing, path to the future. This first stage of redevelopment will include opportunities for more local people to get involved in the Brighton Fishing Museum – one of the seafront’s iconic buildings – an update to the Museum’s Collection Management System, and a new staff and management structure.

The Trust’s Chair, Alex Briault, said: “2019 celebrates 25 years for the Brighton Fishing Museum.  Now we have a great opportunity to take action and begin to revitalise this iconic place; we have a responsibility not only to the Museum’s founders, Andy Durr and Alan Hayes, but to all the volunteers and trustees over the years, whose hard work and love for the place made it what it is today, to ensure the first 25 years was not just the opening of a unique visitor attraction, but the heartfelt creation of a legacy long to be enjoyed.”

Gabrielle Morris, the Trust’s Secretary added: “Failure to protect and strengthen the Fishing Quarter and Museum would result in the loss of a place of tradition and history – our connection to the sea and the generations before us who struggled and survived along this part of the coastline is vital to preserve. On behalf of all the trustees, we thank the National Lottery Players for enabling us to do so.”

Tatchell to distribute LGBT+ leaflets at Regents Park mosque today

Challenge Muslim homophobia – support LGBT+ Muslims.

Today Friday, September 21, the Peter Tatchell Foundation and LGBT+ Muslims will continue their campaign: LGBT+-Muslim Solidarity – Fight all hate by taking their message to one of the largest mosques in Britain – handing out leaflets and talking to worshippers.

Peter Tatchell, said:  “Our message to mosque worshippers is that the Qur’an does not explicitly condemn homosexuality and stipulates no punishments. There is no basis in the Qur’an for the persecution of LGBT+ Muslims. Homophobic Muslims are misinterpreting the Qur’an,”

“The Qur’an states that is it the full and final word of Allah and that it requires no addition or interpretation. The anti-LGBT Hadiths and Sharia law are man-made interpretations which have no basis in the Qur’an. A true Muslim follows the Qur’an alone. We appeal to all Muslims to reject homophobia and to embrace LGBT+ Muslims as a valid and valued part of the Muslim community.”

He continued: “This solidarity campaign urges the LGBT and Muslim communities to stand together against prejudice, challenges Muslim homophobia and defends LGBT Muslims against the far right and Islamist extremists.”

Muhammad, a gay Muslim said: “Nowhere in the Qur’an does it say you should punish a gay Muslim. Too many Muslims misunderstand the story of Lut (Lot). It condemns male rape but not loving consenting same-sex relationships. This misunderstanding leads to so much suffering for LGBT+ Muslims, such as rejection by families and mosques, depression, suicide and even so-called honour killings.”

Ejel, another gay Muslim added: “It is imperative that our LGBT Muslim voices are heard and that we engage with the mainstream Muslim community. I’ve spoken in some mosques on LGBT+ issues but many mosques still don’t acknowledge and support their LGBT+ worshippers. That needs to change.”

Tehmina, a Muslim human rights activist, pointed out: “The dominant interpretations of Islam run counter to LGBT equality and contemporary human rights standards….(however) the academic work of Scott Siraj ul-Haq Kugle on Islam and homosexuality, and the new online theological resource set up by Daaiyee Abdullah, showcases that LGBT-affirming interpretations of Islam are possible.”

A COMPANY of fearless and otherworldly dancers are complemented by Charles Atlas’s lighting design, including a stage adaptation of his multi-channel video installation, Painting by Numbers.

Michael Clark’s latest work is, at first, a reflection on Erik Satie and his influence on Clark’s mentors past and present – the dance meticulous and coolly refined. Next, commanding choreography pulsates to the punk rock of Patti Smith’s landmark album, Horses. Then, a tribute to David Bowie – intricate and sublime, the mood moving from elegiac to joyously rebellious.
