Vodafone introduce trans-inclusive initiatives

Vodafone announce series of trans-inclusive initiatives, as part of the company’s commitment to improving the lives of employees and customers.

THE announcement comes ahead of Vodafone’s sponsorship of Brighton Pride this weekend.

New initiatives include:

♦ Vodafone’s ‘Name Change’ process has been simplified and there is no need for a customer to visit a store or speak to a customer agent to do this. Instead it can be by post; it simply requires one form to be completed with proof of the name change.  This is intended to remove anxiety which may arise from the need to speak to someone.

For full details on the Name Change Process, click here:

♦ A new ‘life events’ section has been added to Vodafone’s customer website to provide easier access to information on the ‘Name Change’ process.  Vodafone has also made it easier to search and find relevant information.

♦ For ‘Pay Monthly’ customers, 24 months of bills will now be accessible, which can be used to support applications for a Gender Recognition Certificate.

♦ A specialist team has been established to respond to ‘living as me’ requests, available on livingasme@help.vodafone.co.uk

♦ Customers can also adopt the gender-neutral Mx prefix via our live chat, voice and retail channels.

Vodafone supports lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT+) communities and recognises that there are key moments when colleagues and customers may need additional support.

Vodafone has also been listening to LGBT+ communities and in particular the experience trans people have when engaging with large organisations.  Independent cross-sector research in April this year indicated that:

♦ Trans and non-binary people felt it was a battle dealing with large organisations.
♦ They felt they needed to ‘come out’ every time they engaged a customer service team.
♦ The name change process caused anxiety, was prone to errors and felt unfair when compared to the experience of other groups.
♦ Contact centre agents and in store advisors were quick to make judgements based on appearance and by sound of voice.
♦ Gendered selections were exclusive and did not reflect all identities.
♦ New biometric processes could be inflexible and proved a challenge for those transitioning.

In July 2018, the UK Government published results from a national LGBT+ survey which saw more than 108,000 LGBT+ people take part and provide insight into LGBT+ life across the UK.

Earlier this year, Vodafone launched an LGBT+ Retail Ambassador programme to train and support in-store employees with LGBT+ topics and new Ambassadors received training from Stonewall in May this year.  This has led to the rainbow symbol being incorporated into name badges and more than 100 retail stores have come out to support local pride events up and down the country.  This complements existing training initiatives such as the Vodafone Way of Care that incorporates LGBT+ scenarios into front line training.

The company has introduced a customer reporting process that now tracks negative experiences LGBT+ customers may have experienced.  This will enable Vodafone to get faster feedback from LGBT+ customers on where change is needed to improve how we support customers.

These customer initiatives build on work Vodafone is already doing to support colleagues, which this year has included launching a ‘Friends of LGBT’ accreditation programme and a series of initiatives to support young LGBT+ people when they start their first job.  This includes offering all new graduates an LGBT+ buddy and supporting 400 graduates through inclusive leadership training.

Brighton Pride give refugees free tickets for new LoveBN1Fest

Brighton Pride supports Hummingbird Project for refugee families and their carers

PRIDE organisers donate one hundred tickets for refugee families to attend the LoveBN1Fest on Sunday, August 5.

Brighton Pride, a Pride with purpose, and cornerstone of the Brighton & Hove Pride Festival, celebrates the varied LGBT+ communities in Brighton and Hove by enabling people to celebrate Pride who might otherwise be unable to.

This year, Pride gave 100 tickets for the LoveBN1Fest to the Hummingbird Project for refugee families and their carers. The new Sunday festival, LoveBN1Fest, celebrates everything Brighton & Hove bringing all communities and rainbow families together for an afternoon of fun on Preston Park.

Elaine Ortiz, founder of the Hummingbird Project, said: “Huge thank you to Pride for giving our charity 100 free tickets for the family friendly event on Sunday. We work with young refugees, their families and carers and they have now benefited from the free passes. I have also distributed tickets with other partner refugee organisations that work directly with young people and adults. The people who received these tickets would likely not have been able to participate in the day without this. Everyone is very excited to take part in celebrating Pride with our beautiful city.

“I really hope that the Refugees Welcome Movement will follow the footsteps of the LGBT movement and achieve making significant changes in order to give protection and human rights to those fleeing war and oppression. I hope in the future we will be seeing hundreds of thousands of people standing shoulder to shoulder with Refugees celebrating having achieved this, together.”

To thank the hardworking blue light services, Pride have also provided discounted tickets to the Sussex and Surrey Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, and the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

Chief Inspector Katy Woolford of Sussex and Surrey Police said: “As a thank you from Brighton & Hove Pride, all emergency services, including Sussex and Surrey Police, have been issued with half price discounted ticket to say thank you for supporting Pride and keeping people coming to the city safe.”

Brighton & Hove Pride has raised over £455,000 for community good causes in the past five years, thanks to the support of businesses, sponsors and the many thousands of people who purchase tickets for the Pride Festival and other events.

‘Walk in Centre’ extends hours during Pride to save A&E for those in most need

Residents and visitors with minor injuries sustained at Pride are being urged to use the Brighton Station Health Centre, which is opening late over the weekend, to help free up Emergency Services for those most in need.

THE last few months have been extremely difficult for the NHS across the country, especially on A&E departments and local GP surgeries as they cope with increasing numbers of people seeking treatment.

To help ease this pressure on local services this Pride the NHS is urging people with minor infections and rashes, stomach upsets, superficial cuts and bruises, minor burns and strains to visit Brighton Station Health Centre for treatment.

There is no need to be a registered patient or to make an appointment to use the walk-in centre and it offers quick treatment close to home, with extended opening hours for Pride:

♦   Saturday, August 4, 2018, 8am to 2am

♦   Sunday, August 5 2018, 8am to 2am

For a list of all the alternatives to A&E visits, and listings on the most appropriate services available across Sussex to treat a range of illness and injuries, click here:

People can also dial 111 if they need medical help but are not in a life-threatening situation. NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is a great way to get the right medical advice at any time.

Dr David Supple, Clinical Chair of the Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “This Pride, if you do need urgent care that is not an emergency, you can get treated quickly without an appointment at the Brighton Station Health Centre. There is no need to be a registered patient or to make an appointment to and it offers easy access to quick treatment with extended hours just for Pride.

“Everyone can #HelpMyNHS by choosing the right service at the right time, freeing up emergency services for those most in need.”

Greens call for ‘lasting equality’ ahead of Brighton & Hove Pride

Senior Greens to march on the Colour My World, Community Parade at Brighton Pride.

ON Saturday, August 4, the Green Party will join community groups, human rights campaigners and local organisations on the Brighton Pride Community Parade as record crowds are predicted to pour into Brighton and Hove this weekend.

Caroline Lucas MP

Green Party Co-leader and Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas, who will be marching with the Green bloc on Saturday said: “Pride is an opportunity to both celebrate Brighton and Hove’s LGBT+ communities and to stand united in support of everyone’s rights – regardless of their sexuality, gender identity or background. I am incredibly proud to represent a city that champions true equality and hope that in the year ahead we can together do even more to eliminate the discrimination that can still make LGBT+ people’s lives more difficult.”

Cllr Phélim Mac Cafferty
Cllr Phélim Mac Cafferty

Convenor of the Green Group of Councillors Phélim Mac Cafferty who will lead the Green bloc said: “This weekend is Pride and Greens will once again march with all those who stand up for equality and liberation, as we come together to celebrate our LGBT+ communities.

“This year is also the 40th anniversary of the iconic rainbow flag designed by artist Gilbert Baker. Rooted in activism, this celebrated symbol was first flown at San Francisco’s Pride march in 1978. Following the tragic assassination of the first openly gay US politician Harvey Milk, demand for the flags soared.

“Pride sees the city decorated in rainbow flags yet despite progress, we know that there is still much work to do. One in four LGBTQIA+ people have experienced violent hate crime and homophobia is legitimised in government with the stridently homophobic DUP, who have blocked equal marriage in Northern Ireland.  The Home Office continues its policy of creating a ‘hostile environment’ for migrants which has in turn grown LGBTQIA+ prejudice.

“As we celebrate the progress made for LGBTQIA+ equality, we are reminded by the rainbow flag in its 40th year that it is the dedication of campaigners and courage of communities, refusing to be silent, that has made progress on LGBTQIA+ rights possible. Greens will continue to campaign for an end to the ‘hostile environment’ policy of this Conservative Government that punishes those already vulnerable for who they love. We will campaign until we have lasting equality both here and abroad. I wish everyone a safe, happy and sustainable Pride.”

Keith Taylor MEP
Keith Taylor MEP

Keith Taylor, Green Party MEP for the South East said: “As a Brighton resident and former city councillor, I know just how much effort goes into making Pride possible. I want to extend my fullest support to each and every one of you. It’s the wonderful organisers, volunteers, local businesses, sponsors, artists, charities and attendees that always make Pride such a fabulous event.

“The UK has made great strides in progress for LGBT+ rights, but there is still work to be done towards achieving equality for all when just 46% of the community feel comfortable being gay in the UK.

“As a member of Parliament’s cross-party Intergroup for LGBT rights, and I  will do all I can to defend human rights and ensure that we keep making progress, in Brighton and Hove and beyond.

“I can’t make it this year, but I hope that the pride truly is a riot of colour. It is visible and a joyous celebration of love, life, equality and diversity.”

Rainbow Amex flies the flag

American Express one of the city’s largest employers installs giant Rainbow flag at its John Street, Brighton office, ahead of this weekend’s Brighton & Hove Pride.

THIS year marks five years of Amex support of Brighton Pride and the tenth year of Amex colleague participation in the Community Pride Parade.

Themed Colour my World, Brighton Pride 2018 is expected to be the most colourful yet, in celebration of the original eight colour Rainbow flag created 40 years ago.

More than 100 Amex colleagues, including many from the company’s Pride UK Colleague Network, will join the Parade on Saturday, sporting ‘Proud to celebrate diversity’ T-shirts and many more will be lining the route with family members and friends.
