Help stop hate crime – find out more at Brighton and Hove Pride

Prosecutors from CPS South East will be at this year’s Brighton and Hove Pride event to encourage more reporting of hate crime from the LGBT+ communities.

THE Crown Prosecution Service will have a stall in the community marketplace on Saturday, August 4 and will be able to explain what hate crime is and how seriously it is taken by the criminal justice system.

Defendants who commit hate crimes motivated by prejudice are handed stiffer sentences called “uplifts” and recent hate crimes dealt with by the CPS in Sussex include:

♦ A homophobic attack on a man in a Brighton street, which knocked him out and left him needing surgery for a fractured jaw. His attacker was sentenced to 18 months in prison for this attack and a further year for another assault, where he also used homophobic language. Had it not been for the homophobic nature of the attacks, the prison sentence would only have been two years. Each assault was given a three-month “uplift”, where defendants are handed stiffer sentences, because they have committed a hate crime motivated by prejudice.

♦ An incident at Gatwick Airport, where homophobic comments were yelled at a member of staff before the defendant was prevented from boarding a plane due to his behaviour. The man responsible was ordered to serve an additional 20 hours of community serve due to the nature of his comments on top of the 100 he originally received.

♦ A man, who had his jail sentence increased by 50% from four to six weeks, after yelling homophobic comments at two paramedics trying to treat him in Hove, who felt they were targeted because of their sexuality.

♦ A man, who received an increased fine, after yelling homophobic abuse at a pub in Brighton prior to the Brighton and Hove Albion game against Coventry in February. He was given a three-year football banning order.

Paul Stimson, from the CPS, said: “We want to encourage more reporting of hate crimes from the LGBT+ community.

“No-one should have to tolerate attacks and abuse like this on their sexuality and it’s something the whole of the criminal justice system takes seriously, with increased sentences for those responsible.

“Everyone has a role to play in this. If you know someone who is being targeted as a result of their sexual orientation, or their race, religion or disability, we want to encourage those people to come forward and report it.

“The Crown Prosecution Service actively prosecutes all these types of hate crime and we will be at Brighton and Hove Pride to show our support for the LGBT+ community in the South East.”

Visitors to the CPS stall at Pride will also have the opportunity to complete anonymous surveys about their experiences of hate crime and whether or not they reported them. The CPS will be looking at the responses to see what can be learnt from people’s experiences.

Manchester Gay Village gets ‘ultra-fast’ internet

The Gay Village in Manchester gets ‘ultra-fast’ internet in time for more than 180,000 visitors expected at this year’s  Manchester Pride festival.

VISITORS to Manchester’s famous Pride Festival in August can expect ‘ultrafast’ broadband thanks to a fast-growing technology firm.

GLEEfi (Gay Lesbian Everyone Everywhere) is the new superfast Wi-Fi broadband product being installed through 1GB internet pipes based in key locations in the village by business support firm OneTek Business Solutions.

This means visitors to the world famous Gay Village can expect speeds up to 1GB, putting it in the top 1 per cent of internet speeds in the UK. Currently, public WiFi in the village runs at around 2MB – 6MB meaning that speeds are sluggish during peak times.

The Manchester Pride Festival runs over the August Bank Holiday weekend and features performances from artists including Pete Tong, 808 State and Alexandra Burke.

Davina White, Business Development Manager at OneTek, said: “One of the longstanding issues in the village has been the slow, snail-paced internet speeds especially during peak hours and events like the Manchester Pride Festival. We are delighted to have worked with some iconic venues and business owners in the village to install and deliver as a community based project and offer access to more than 100,000 people at Manchester Pride and throughout the rest of the year, ultrafast connectivity.

“Every business relies on reliable excellent connectivity especially where point-of-sale equipment relies on it. We are on a mission to roll out our ultrafast WiFi solution to other events across the UK. We are already in talks with other LGBT specific festivals, music festivals and communities.

“The village has always been one of Manchester’s most innovative and entrepreneurial destinations and we are proud to be playing a small part in continuing that tradition of bringing new and emerging trends to the area.”

OneTek was launched in 2008 by Lee Donaghey and provides WiFi solutions to villages, towns and community spaces across the country and as well as IT support to businesses of all sizes. The company head quartered in Winsford, Cheshire has offices in Stoke and Stockport.

Access to GLEEfi for the whole Pride weekend will cost £5 (£4 if bought online before) with proceeds being shared by venues, OneTek and 5 per cent each to four Manchester-based charities popular in the LGBT community: George House Trust, The Proud Trust, Sparkle and the Albert Kennedy Trust.

Business owners in the village are supportive of the initiative.

Phil Burke, Chair of the Village Business Association, said: “This is a very welcome community initiative that benefits everyone. As well as visitors, local businesses in the village and charities close to our hearts will all reap the rewards. Internet speed has been an issue in the village for quite some time now and we are supportive of new initiatives to give village-based businesses a commercial advantage.”

Cost of HIV drugs including PrEP could reduce following court ruling

Landmark court ruling could be game changer for costings of PrEP and other HIV drugs.

A RULING today from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) suggests that Gilead’s patent for Truvada, the drug used to treat many people living with HIV, and the drug used for PrEP, may be under threat.

The ruling follows a request for an opinion from the UK court, which is hearing a challenge to the patent brought by a number of generic drug manufacturers.

The ruling now returns to the UK court for consideration and application. If the UK court agrees with this judgment, Truvada will immediately come off patent, and the NHS will be able to purchase generic alternatives for a fraction of the cost.

The ruling puts pressure on NHS England to consider the possible implications for PrEP, and begin planning now for the possibility of access to cheaper generic PrEP in the near future.

Deborah Gold

Deborah Gold, Chief Executive of NAT (National AIDS Trust), said: “This is a landmark court ruling which may have great importance for cheaper access to a vitally important HIV medication. The legal process is not over yet – the UK courts must consider the ECJ judgment and apply it. But NHS England must be ready to purchase generic PrEP as part of a national PrEP programme roll-out, without any cap on numbers, from April 2019.”

Local children head to The Big Apple!

Local Musical about bullying offered opportunity to play in New York City.

IT’S not every day a group of 12 children are invited to perform their show in New York City, but that’s exactly what has happened to the cast of This Boy Tom, a musical written by Natalie Sexton, starring twelve local school children from Brighton & Hove.

This Boy Tom is a musical about bullying in schools. It’s an uplifting and life-affirming tale that started life at The Brighton Fringe in 2017, and made a spectacular return this May.

Tom’s daily quest is to get through another day without his bullies remembering his existence. Jessica thinks he has a dark secret, but with new girl Flora’s arrival, is it time for something new? And is there any truth to the rumour Jessica is spreading?

Natalie Sexton said: “It’s an incredible opportunity. This production has been a passion project of mine since 2016 and to get this recognition is both humbling and really thrilling.”

This Boy Tom began life as workshops in 2016, and then had a small run in 2017 before being picked up at this year’s Brighton Fringe.

The Fringe Encore series takes the best productions from each Fringe Festival across the world (Hollywood, Adelaide, Toronto, Brighton) and gives them a slot in the Soho Playhouse, Off-Broadway as an international showcase.

Natalie added: “We are raising funds to get the show over there for the two-week run, which begins November 8 – 24. The show has a gofundme page, as well as some fun fundraising activities over the coming months so look out for our bright red t-shirts popping up across town!”

This Boy Tom and Natalie are looking to hear from local companies and individuals who might be able to help get the show over to New York.

Major study finds no transmission of HIV with people on effective HIV medication

Results of new study into HIV transmission revealed at the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam.

THE PARTNER 2 study investigated how effective HIV medication is in preventing the transmission of HIV, especially between gay men.

The results show that Antiviral Therapy (ART) is as effective for gay men at preventing HIV transmission as it is for heterosexuals and provides an even greater level of evidence for gay men as the original PARTNER 1 research results provided for heterosexual couples.

The first PARTNER study in 2014 looked at sero-discordant couples (where one is HIV positive and one is HIV negative), who were having condomless sex.

Where the HIV positive partner was on effective HIV medication and had an undetectable viral load, it failed to find a single incidence of HIV transmission between the couples. This held true in over 40,000 incidents where condomless sex was happening.

Although it included some same-sex couples, the first PARTNER study looked mainly at opposite-sex couples. Because HIV is transmitted more easily via anal sex than vaginal sex researchers wanted to do produce a follow-up study that looked exclusively at male couples who engage in anal sex.

PARTNER 2 research was conducted in 14-countries and looked at 635 gay couples, in addition to the 337 gay couples already recruited for PARTNER 1.

Participants reported nearly 77,000 acts of condomless sex, yet the study found not a single incident of HIV transmission when the HIV-positive partner had a viral load under 200.

The findings provide further evidence that Undetectable = Untransmittable, a message that sexual health organisations around the world are now getting behind and backing.

Matthew Hodson
Matthew Hodson

NAM’s Executive Director, Matthew Hodson, said: “This is the moment when science trumps stigma. This is the moment when facts must conquer fear.

“The knowledge that when we are undetectable we can’t pass the virus on to our sexual partners has the power to encourage people to test and to remain adherent to their treatment. Just as importantly it can have an impact on the way that people with HIV think about themselves, removing some of the stress and fear that many in our communities experience.”

Ian Howley
Ian Howley

Ian Howley, CEO of Health Equality and Rights Organisation/GMFA, added: “People who are on effective and successful treatment cannot pass on HIV to their partners.

“What the PARTNER 2 study does is prove once again that people who are on effective and successful treatment cannot pass on HIV to their partners. This should be reassuring to every gay and bisexual man who is HIV-undetectable that you are not a danger to anyone and no person should use your status as a way to reject you.

“However, the results of the PARTNER 2 study will not wipe away the stigma those living with HIV receive overnight. We have to continue to push the message and help educate those who still don’t believe the science behind the U=U movement.”

Dr Michael Brady
Dr Michael Brady

Dr Michael Brady, Medical Director, Terrence Higgins Trust said: “We’re thrilled that the PARTNER2 results are out, and confirm what we already knew: that people living with HIV on effective treatment cannot pass the virus on to their sexual partners.

“The two studies (PARTNER1 and PARTNER2) scientifically prove this, and will be so powerful in helping to fight the stigma and myths that still surround HIV.

“What’s most important now is ensuring that we continue to share this message and educate people as far and wide as possible, to help improve the lives of people living with HIV across the world.”

THEY are Councillor Amanda Knight, Deputy Convenor of the Green Group of Councillors and spokesperson for the Corporate Parenting Board and campaigners Steve Moses and Mariana Ebel.

Councillor Knight said: “Standing in Goldsmid Ward for a second term gives me the opportunity to show my commitment to representing the ward. If residents re-elect me, then I’d be delighted to continue speaking up for the residents of Goldsmid and carry on my commitment to supporting the children of the city. After 17 years of living locally I’m pleased to be standing up for the issues that matter.”

Steve Moses added: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to stand for election in Goldsmid Ward for the Brighton and Hove Green party in the council elections in May. I believe Green Party Councillors have made a major contribution to making Brighton and Hove the successful, vibrant, forward-looking city that it is today. The rejuvenation of the Level, the transformation of Seven Dials, the introduction of 20mph speed limits, improvements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, and the adoption of the Living Wage by so many local employers are just some of the outstanding achievements brought about by Green Councillors. If I’m elected, having the chance to add my own contribution to these achievements, especially in the historic Goldsmid area of Hove would be a fantastic challenge and a great honour.”

Mariana Ebel said: “I‘m thrilled to have been chosen as a Green Party candidate for the upcoming Brighton & Hove council elections, with the opportunity to represent my local Goldsmid ward.

“I would like to thank my fellow Greens for their trust in selecting me and hope that my passion and love for this fantastic city will be of benefit to everyone. If I’m successful in next year’s council elections I will work hard to improve the lives of all residents. Issues I see that need to be tackled include waste recycling, transport, the effects of austerity and the ongoing damage to our environment. I believe that we need to look after the vulnerable, families and elderly people. I’m looking forward to working together with my fellow Councillors in Goldsmid.”

Goldsmid is a three seat Ward currently held by two Labour councillors and one Green councillor.
