Rainbow Fund grants round – final call for applications

The Rainbow Fund would like to remind everyone that they are open for applications to their Annual Funding Round.

THE online application form, together with an explanation of this year’s criteria, can be found on The Rainbow Fund website at www.rainbow-Fund.org/application-form

The closing date is 5pm on Friday, August 31, 2018 –  any forms received after that date will not be considered.

Potential applicants are reminded that The Rainbow Fund is made up of funds raised within the community, due to hard work by fundraising groups, venues, volunteers, and donations from individuals. The Rainbow Fund are keen to encourage small, volunteer led projects to apply.

Last year some applicants seeking funding for LGBT+ and HIV specific projects also applied to Pride’s Social Impact Fund in addition to, or instead of, applying to The Rainbow Fund.

The Social Impact Fund was set up specifically for non LGBT+ and HIV projects, and is a much smaller Fund, with maximum grants of £1,000. If your project is LGBT+ or HIV specific please only apply to The Rainbow Fund, as The Social Impact Fund would have to turn you down as your application wouldn’t meet their criteria.

Chris Gull, Chair of Rainbow Fund said: “As in previous years there is no cap on the amount that can be applied for, nor on the number of projects that any group or organisation can apply for, but the remit of the independent grants panel is to ensure that funds raised within our communities through the efforts of volunteer fundraisers, and from individual donations, is spent to achieve the most benefit from the limited amount of money available. We also need to be convinced that applicants have the ability to deliver their projects to completion.”

Last year LGBT/HIV organisations including Allsorts Youth Project, MindOut, Brighton GEMS, Older and Out, Peer Action, Sussex Beacon, Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum, Rainbow Chorus, The Clare Project, Accessibility Matters, Trans Alliance, Whitehawk LGBT+ Support Group, LGBT Switchboard, and Lunch Positive received grants totalling £110,688.

HIV charity hosts Brighton Pride Community Cafe

Once again this year, Lunch Positive will be staging a Community Café at Brighton Pride in Preston Park on Saturday, August 4.

THE Café will be sited in the Community Village near the centre of the park and will have a seating area, designated tables and assisted table service for people with access needs.

The Community Café is staged entirely by Lunch Positive volunteers and helping members, and will serve a range of affordable hot food, hot and cold drinks, and home made cakes.

20 volunteers will give over 100 hours in total on the day, all to support a cause they care passionately about. Every penny raised from sales of food and drink on the day will go towards the delivery and development of the HIV lunch club all year round.

Brighton graduate lights up London

University of Brighton graduate lights up London’s most iconic buildings with political slogans.

JACK Mills, who graduated with BA(Hons) in Humanities and is now Print Features Editor on the magazine Dazed and Confused, teamed up with New York activist group The Illuminator who travel the world projecting messages onto high-visibility buildings.

Jack, 31, said: “For our project #AddressTheNation we took issues that matter most to our readers and projected them into the skyline of London – specifically, onto the Houses of Parliament, the Ministry of Justice, The Royal Courts of Justice, and Nelson’s Column. Across nine projections, we addressed top topics including Brexit, Donald Trump’s visit, the NHS and the abuse of trans people at London Pride.

“It was a first for Dazed and all went well – although a warden did try to move us along while we were projecting onto Nelson’s Column. No disrespect was intended, but this was a way to get our readers’ messages across. Many young people feel they aren’t being listened to by our government, and with Trump’s helicopters flying over London – a visit that many Londoners didn’t want – it felt like the perfect moment to make a big statement.

“There have been no complaints and we’ve been swamped with compliments.”

The Illuminator’s Emily Andersen told Dazed their main aim was to: “Shine a light on the urgent issues of our time – we’ve done a great job of having a moment of intervention, but also involving the power of the audience.”

Jack Mills worked in collaboration with Dazed’s Head of Video Bec Evans, who is launching a short film about the night tonight (July 18) on dazeddigital.com.
