PREVIEW: ‘Divas On Film’ at Duke of Yorks Picturehouse

To celebrate Britney Spears coming to Brighton Pride, Duke of York’s are putting on a special season celebrating the best of Divas on the big screen.

PRIDE is the jewel in the crown of the Brighton summer – an event that both locals and visitors look forward to all year.

The entire city is transformed into a kaleidoscope of colours and glitter for the entire weekend, the rainbow flag is flown from public buildings and every vantage point on the Pride Parade.

This year promises to be bigger than ever, with global pop icon Britney Spears, headlining the event at Preston Park on Saturday, August 4 with her complete Las Vegas show, Piece Of Me.

To celebrate, the Duke of York’s Picturehouse is putting on a mini-season called Divas on Film. Starring the best and brightest ladies in world cinema in iconic film roles, the season promises to be the perfect way to get yourself hyped up for a fantastic Pride weekend.

Like Brighton Pride itself, the films in this season will dazzle audiences, whether it be your first or fiftieth time watching them.

First of all, on Saturday July 28 at 6pm, Dreamgirls (2006) is showing. The classic movie, starring Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, follows the Dreamettes on the way to stardom, and the price that comes along with it. Based on the Broadway musical, the film is “overwhelmingly emotional, with something to say and a dream cast saying it in song.” Queen B struts her stuff in this timeless classic

On Monday July 30 at 9pm, Burlesque (2010) starring Cher and Christina Aguilera is being screened. It follows Ali as she moves to Los Angeles and begins working in a Burlesque bar where she uses her incredible voice to delve deep into the glamour. The film is filled with saucy dance numbers, a beautiful cast and stella advice; “if you fall.. Remember, legs extended, boobs out.”

Rounding off the season on Thursday July 3 at 9pm, is Crossroads (2002) starring Britney Spears and Zoe Saldana. This classic film follows three friends and a stranger along a road trip across the United States. This is a perfect opportunity to get ready to see Britney herself live in Preston Park on August 4 and sing along with her classic songs.

All three films showcase incredible music from fantastic women whose songs will be blasting across all venues throughout Pride weekend. They are stories of hope – about following your dreams, and being who you truly are.

Put on your sparkliest dress, strap on some high heels and make sure you attend the best pre-Pride event Brighton has to offer.

Celebrity Cruises host ‘Pride Party at Sea’

Celebrity Cruises host the second annual Pride Party at Sea across its fleet around the world, with Adam Rippon and Johnny Weir serving as ambassadors.

FROM Alaska to Italy, Celebrity celebrate Pride Month by hosting its second annual Pride Party at Sea with Olympic bronze medallist figure skater Adam Rippon and two-time men’s figure skating Olympian Johnny Weir serving as ambassadors for this year’s festivities.

The luxury cruise line also hosted a pride parade at sea on-board each ship, as festivities started on June 5 on-board Celebrity Constellation and Celebrity Reflection in Sicily, Italy, and Cartagena, Spain, respectively.

“Celebrity Cruises has been and always will be dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusivity and equality, and part of the dedication includes knowing when to take time to celebrate the hard work and successes of the LGBT+ communities,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. “Pride Month is the perfect time to celebrate and, with all of the fun we had last year, it made perfect sense that we’d continue the tradition, only this time it will be twice the fun and twice the party.”

Adam Rippon, who is currently sailing on board Celebrity Summit for the celebration, said: “I’m honoured to be an ambassador for Celebrity Cruises’ second annual Pride Party at Sea! It’s great to collaborate with a brand that is so dedicated to the LGBT+ communities.”

The party took place in tandem across the award-winning Celebrity Cruises fleet, with each ship ‘handing over the baton’ to the next to keep the celebrations going across hemispheres and time zones. Eventually, the party travelled more than 10,000 miles to nine ships around the world.

Celebrity Cruises welcomed thousands of guests to the inaugural event last year – which was planned as a show of solidarity and with an effort to celebrate the LGBT+ communities – with Tie The Knot co-founder Justin Mikita serving as ambassador.

Serial rapist – Hampshire Police make improvements to sex offender management

Following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), Hampshire Constabulary accepts five recommendations to improve how it monitors people on its sex offender register.

THE investigation was launched in April 2017 into how the force managed Sam Ashley, a registered sex offender, between June 2016 and December 2016 following a referral from Hampshire Constabulary.

During this period it emerged that Ashley had been accused of a series of sex offences against men across Hampshire and Dorset who he drugged and attacked after meeting on the dating app Grindr.

On May 10, 2018 at Portsmouth Crown Court he was convicted of four counts of rape, two attempted rapes and four charges of administering a substance with intent. He was subsequently sentenced to 23 years in jail.

The Hampshire Constabulary investigation lasted five months and concluded in September 2017.

The IOPC found that two Hampshire Constabulary staff should receive management action regarding their performance and offered learning recommendations on how sex offenders should be managed that have been accepted and acted upon by Hampshire Constabulary.

The recommendations include improved sharing and recording of information on internal logs and changes to how risk assessments are conducted.

IOPC Regional Director Sarah Green said: “Mr Ashley has been convicted of extremely serious offences and has been jailed for a significant length of time.

“It should be made clear that while our investigation did not reveal any behaviour by any Hampshire employees that could be considered misconduct, we did make some recommendations as to how the force could improve the way it manages people on the registered sex offenders list.

“I am pleased that Hampshire has moved quickly to accept and implement those recommendations.”
