Sunday, October 16, 2016 marks the centenary of the arrival at Charleston of Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and David ‘Bunny’ Garnett.

Their arrival as World War I conscientious objectors saw the creation of Charleston as the country home of the Bloomsbury group and a legacy of art, literature and freedom of thought that is as relative today as it has been over the last 100 years.

To celebrate this landmark at Charleston, there are several activities and programmes planned over the centenary weekend of October 15-16 and into the centenary year.

These include special access and extended House tours, theatrical performances, free art activities, lectures and a new Blog, Charleston in 100 objects.

Autumn issue of The Pink Humanist ready for download

web-300Online magazine The Pink Humanist is published by the UK LGBT charity the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT).

It features topics of special interest to those who identify as atheists, freethinkers, humanists, secularists and sceptics in the LGTB communities and those who support them.

The magazine’s editor is Barry Duke who also edits the Freethinker (the Voice of Atheism since 1881).

Among the features in the latest (Autumn 2016) issue include an in-depth look at developments in Serbia, where the Christian Orthodox Church continues to oppose LGBT rights. The church is slowly losing ground, however, as the country inches towards more inclusive policies.

Another feature indicates that hard-won rights in the US are in danger of being reversed if Donald Trump wins the American presidential election when the country goes to polls on November 8, 2016.

Other items include:

♦ A hardening of attitudes in southern Africa towards foreign Christian hate preachers.

♦ Further funding given by the Pink Triangle Trust to Humanist Empowerment of Livelihoods in Uganda (HELU).

♦ A report on a successful trip to the Arctic by humanist Victor Pemberton, 84, to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

♦ News of the release No God, No Saviour, a collection of essays by Nigerian humanist activist Leo Igwe.

WearUrArt charity shop design challenge 2016

After eight years providing a professional showcase platform for young up and coming performance artists and fashion designers, FRONT ROW Fashion Events launches WearUrArt Charity Shop Design Challenge 2016.

web-600

The WearUrArt Challenge has a simple brief: Create an outfit from Charity Shop clothing or objects and/or recycled materials within a budget of only £30.00!

FRONT ROW 2016 is taking the competition nationwide to extrapolate the creative talent from all corners of the UK.

Entrants will become a part of a national drive to re-encapsulate fashion as a statement of individuality and art without any environmental impact.

Previous FRONT ROW design challenges unearthed fine entries from creative talents of all ages, abilities and backgrounds and participants are encouraged to be as outrageous and innovative as they can, using unusual and surprising materials that have been recycled. This is not about consumerism, it is about expression and freedom of thought: Fashion Anarchy starts at WearUrArt.

A panel of sustainable fashion luminaries will judge all entries, and finalists are invited to present their creation in an epic showcase and award ceremony together with music performances and visual installations on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the iconic De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill and a further showcase at London”s Southbank Centre in December.

FRONT ROW’s Creative Director Maika Crampton who has curated the show since its inception in 2008, said: “We are really excited to have the fabulous Crystal Hart perform at the show with her entourage of Terrence Higgins Trust supporters who will explode onto the stage of the De La Warr Pavilion with an even more glamorous and outrageous performance than last year to raise awareness for the Trust’s important community work and World Aids Day.

“We are also proud supporters of our other partner charity St. Michael’s Hospice whom we will curate a complete catwalk collection with clothes sourced entirely from their shops.”
