The tour bus will travel the length of the country, from John O’Groats to Land’s End, parking up on Ship Street, Brighton, on Monday, November 23, 2015 between 10am – 2pm and offer a raft of information aimed at helping local businesses boost trade, not only on Small Business Saturday itself, December 5, but year-round.

The Brighton stop-off is being coordinated by the City Council with support from a range of stakeholders who will be on hand throughout the day with information about what’s on offer locally and nationally to small business traders, community interest, social enterprise and start-up companies.

Those taking part include:

♦        the Conscious Business People

♦        Small Business Saturday UK

♦        The Wild Things & Happy Start-Up Schools

The day’s programme will include a series of free drop-in workshops and advice covering a range of topics including:

♦        Where to find help with business plans, funding and grants,

♦        How to identify your best customer

♦        Developing the mind-set and resilience to be a creative self-starter

♦        Local business courses

♦        Business development

There will also be the opportunity to find out about the benefits of the VisitBrighton partnership scheme and for consumers and businesses to join Goodmoney, the Brighton-based voucher scheme designed to encourage residents to buy local.

Goodmoney gift vouchers come in £5, £10 and £25 denominations and can be spent at a growing network of over 150 independent local businesses, including shops, restaurants and cafes, art classes, music tuition and outdoor sports.

Leader of the Council, Warren Morgan, said: “There is a wealth of information and help out there for entrepreneurs and small business operators but sometimes it’s just a case of having the time to find it, especially when you’re starting out and time is limited.

“Brighton & Hove’s impressive range of independent businesses are a big draw for visitors and a vital part of the local economy so I’m really pleased the city has been chosen for this stop-off.  I hope that as many local traders as possible will visit the bus and take advantage of the extra help it offers ahead of Small Business Saturday.”

More than 9,000 general places were sold over the summer – the largest number in the race’s 26-year history – and charity places are now the only way for runners to enter the race.

Runners can choose to run for over 35 charities, including local charities The Sussex Beacon, RISE and Chestnut Tree House, and national charities Scope, WaterAid, Shelter, Bloodwise, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Macmillan, the Alzheimer’s Society, Prostate Cancer UK and many more.

Race director Martin Harrigan, said: “The Vitality Brighton Half Marathon is unique in the range and scope of charities that we partner with. Charities both local and national are a major part of the race and we believe charity runners contribute hugely to the unique character and experience of the event.”

Celebrating its 26th year in 2016, the race is one of the best-loved half marathons in the UK, with its famous seafront course and the fantastic support it gets from crowds watching the race.

Race day for 2016 is Sunday, February 28, and the race is ideal timing for anyone training for a Spring marathon, such as Brighton, London, Manchester or Paris.

The Vitality Brighton Half Marathon is organised by and the main fundraiser for Brighton-based charity The Sussex Beacon, a unique centre providing innovative services to meet the changing needs of people living with HIV. Runners can choose to be part of Team Beacon and help raise funds for The Sussex Beacon.

Mr Speaker, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, a Patron of the Patchwork Foundation announced the winners of the MP of the Year Awards, 2015 for those MPs who have represented and worked well with underrepresented, deprived and minority communities across the country at Speakers House on November 4, 2015.

The top three awards this year went to Rt Hon Sadiq Khan for Overall People’s Choice MP of the Year 2014-2015, Caroline Lucas for Overall MP of the Parliamentary Term 2010-2015 and Zac Goldmith Overall MP for Year 2014-2015.

Natalie Bennett, Green Party Leader, said: “Caroline’s award is richly deserved. Everyone in the Green Party is constantly inspired by Caroline’s outstanding work in the House of Commons to challenge the status quo and deliver real change for the common good.  This prestigious award recognises what all Greens know – that Caroline has done a huge amount of work for deprived, minority and under represented communities.

“Caroline has been a tireless defender of the most vulnerable and consistently provided real opposition to the government’s damaging and ideologically-driven austerity agenda and her outstanding track record in Westminster has not gone unnoticed by her Brighton Pavilion constituents, who returned her with a significantly increased majority in the May 2015 General Election.”

Caroline Lucas MP, added: “It’s a huge honour to receive this Patchwork Foundation Award. There is still plenty of work to do in tackling the chronic underrepresentation of deprived communities in politics. Our democracy and our politics are richer when a representative cross-section of society is reflected in the institutions of Government.  As the MP for Brighton Pavilion I am committed to continue helping people from all backgrounds to be part of the political process.”

In 2013 Ms Lucas was named Patchwork Foundation Newcomer MP of the Year and MP of the Year in 2014.

World AIDS Day fundraisers in London

Venues across the Capital will be raising funds for GMFA’s HIV prevention and sexual health information website this World Aids Day.

GMFA

Organisations, clubs, pubs and bars will be out in force to support GMFA and its HIV prevention work for gay men with preparations for some of these events starting months ago.

Over a period of 5 days, there will be a vast range of fundraising events and activities across London. Volunteers, from stage performers to bucket collection volunteers, will be giving their time and energy in support of GMFA to raise funds for the charity’s HIV prevention and stigma-challenging work.

Events include Deconstructed, a night of stripped-back classic songs at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in south London and in north London a World AIDS Day Extravaganza boasting an astonishing array of performers at the Bloc Bar, 18 Kentish Town Road, NW1 9NX

Other organisations and venues of note include the essential online fetish site Recon, the bear club XXL, and favourite venues such as Prowler, Compton’s, Halfway to Heaven, The Duke of Wellington, King William IV, Ted’s Place, The Vault, Chariots saunas and Locker Room.

GMFA’s website provides frank HIV prevention and sexual health information to more than a 1 million visitors every year and GMFA’s FS magazine has been at the forefront of addressing issues, including chemsex, HIV stigma and the emotional health of gay men, all of which contribute to high rates of HIV in the community.

Neither of these projects receive Government funding and are completely dependent on the support of the gay community, through fundraising events such as these.

GMFA’s Chief Executive, Matthew Hodson, said: “We’ve been talking to lots of people who work at venues and they tell us how important our campaigns and services are. These are difficult times for small charities and so we are hugely grateful to all the venues who are working with us this year to support our services. Working together we can stop the spread of HIV.”
