Ouch House 200 Auction – fundraising for Brighton Pride and Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals

Brighton DJ, RadioReverb presenter and Gscene cartoonist Queen Josephine auctions Ouch House 200 artwork as part of Brighton Pride Arts & Film Festival at Duke Of Norfolk’s Community Art Show Pride Auction.

Queen Josephine Ouch House 200

A Queen will always rise again after a fall. No matter how Ouchy that fall maybe. Boxing Day 2013 and Brighton DJ and RadioReverb presenter Queen Josephine is involved in an accident. She ends up hospital with a fractured skull, broken elbow and her writing arm shattered in eight places. Little was going to raise her spirits as she lay recovering in the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Except perhaps pen and paper.

Queen Josephine resurrected her love of cartooning and began chronicling her long recovery from surgery with the cartoon strip Ouch House Diaries. Left handed scribbles became right-handed drawn delights as she used honesty and humour to deal with the trails, tribulations and occasional humiliations of her sick-bed.

To celebrate 356 days of pen and ink Queen Josephine has created Ouch House 200, an A2 cartoon featuring everyone who made it into the Ouch House Diaries.

The Ouch House 200 will be part of the Duke Of Norfolk’s Brighton Pride fundraising Community Art Show Auction alongside artists Sami Wood and Sam John with all proceeds donated to Brighton Pride and The Rainbow Fund for their continuing support of local LGBT/HIV charities and organisations as well as The Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals in recognition of the amazing support and care she received from staff whilst at The Royal Sussex Hospital.

Sealed bids welcome – email: djqueenjosephine@mac.com

Limited Edition Ouch House 200 prints also available. A2 £40 / A3 £20.

20% of all proceeds donated to Brighton & Hove Pride and Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals.

Mini conference for local people aged 50+ with HIV

Terrence Higgins Trust dedicate International Older People’s Day to over 50s in Brighton living with HIV.

WEB.600

To mark International Older People’s Day on October 1, the HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) will host an event dedicated to people living locally who are over 50 and living with HIV.

Health, Wealth and Happiness Day, on HIV and ageing in Brighton and Hove will take place at the Friends Meeting House, Ship Street.

The Health Wealth and Happiness Project is a 3 year initiative funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Silver Dreams scheme (in association with the Daily Mail) for people 50 or over and living with HIV in London, Bristol, West Midlands, Brighton or Manchester and focuses on providing support, advice, counselling and information to the first generation of people living with HIV into older age.

These numbers are set to rise significantly over the next decade with 53 per cent (42, 000) of people currently living with HIV in the UK in the 35 – 49 age group.

The most recent regional statistics for the South East Coast region reveal that 27.9 per cent of the total people (5,470) seen for HIV care in Brighton and Hove in 2013 were over 50 – 1,284 men and 247 women.

THT research, 50 Plus, found that older people living with HIV are poorer than their peers. They are less likely to be economically active, own their own home or have savings. At the same time, they have twice as many long-term health conditions.

Attendees will be given a unique opportunity to hear first hand from experts within the field of HIV and ageing. The conference will be free to attend for anyone over 50 living with HIV.

Peer Action, the HIV+ peer support and social group for people living with HIV will provide thirty free therapies and Lunch Positive, the HIV lunch club will serve a free lunch for everyone.

The Sussex Beacon will be running a workshop and there will be information stands from other organisations providing services in the city.

Sue Peters, Regional Manager, Terrence Higgins Trust, said: “We hope that our Health, Wealth and Happiness Day in Brighton and Hove will provide a chance for older people living with HIV to hear first hand from professionals in the field of HIV and ageing, and to meet others in a similar situation. There will also be an opportunity to hear about the services and support available locally.”

Confirmed speakers for the event include:

♦  Jackie Morton, Interim Chief Executive, Terrence Higgins Trust

♦  Dr Jonathan Underwood, Clinical Research Fellow, Imperial College, London

♦  Dr Tom Levett, Clinical Research Fellow in Elderly and HIV Medicine, Brighton and Sussex Medical School

♦  Dr Jaime Vera, Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in HIV Medicine, Brighton and Sussex Medical School

Kemptown MP urges action on latest unauthorised traveller encampments

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, urges Brighton & Hove City Council to come up with a plan to deal with the latest traveller encampments at Black Rock, Wilson Avenue and East Brighton Park, after being contacted by concerned local residents.

Simon Kirby MP
Simon Kirby MP

Mr Kirby says he is in constant contact with Brighton & Hove City Council about unauthorised traveller encampments and also recently met with Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp recently to discuss this issue amongst others.

Mr Kirby presented a petition to Parliament earlier this year signed by thousands of Brighton residents, asking the Government to ensure that the City Council was doing all it could to move on unauthorised traveller encampments promptly.

The Secretary of State issued observations on the petition including the following comments:

In August 2013, the Government sent all councils in England a summary of the strong and extensive powers available to them to deal with unauthorised encampments and development—including their enhanced Temporary Stop Notice powers. We reminded councils of the need to be ready to take swift and decisive action to stop unauthorised encampments starting in the first place.

Public bodies should not gold-plate human rights and equalities legislation. Councils and the police have been given strong powers to deal with unauthorised encampments and when deciding whether to take action, they may want to consider for example:

♦  the harm that such developments can cause to local amenities and the local environment

♦  the potential interference with the peaceful enjoyment of neighbouring property

♦  the need to maintain public order and safety and protect health—for example, by deterring fly-tipping and criminal damage

♦  any harm to good community relations

♦  that the state may enforce laws to control the use of an individual’s property where that is in accordance with the general public interest

Mr Kirby, said; “The Minister has set out clearly the very strong powers local authorities have. I would urge the Council to come up with a plan to deal with these traveller encampments that are causing serious concern to many local residents.”

THEATRE REVIEW: Flare Path: Terence Rattigan

FlarePath_UKtourposter_jun15

Flare Path

Terence Rattigan

Devonshire Park Theatre

Eastbourne.

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE day Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews, their wives and sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return. Based on Rattigan’s experiences as a tail gunner during World War II and set in 1942 against a backdrop of heartache and quiet bravery, it’s a stiff upper lip poignant tale of doing the right thing and making the very best of every moment.

Flare Path tells the story of former actress Patricia, the wife of RAF pilot Teddy, as their marriage is tested to the limits by the surprise arrival of Patricia’s ex-lover and Hollywood idol Peter Kyle. A dangerous mission over Germany for her husband puts Patricia at the center of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies.

A leading Hollywood man, a screen throb and swoon inducing world-famous movie star would have at least some charisma and raw masculine beauty but unfortunately this was not the case with the leading man Leon Ockenden although he was pretty enough and pleasing to the eye but his acting was also uninspiring, however the character is supposed to be vain, self-deluded, insecure, and self-obsessed and shallow so perhaps we should extend the benefit of the doubt for this performance. Olivia Hallinan as air force sweetheart Patricia handles the conflict and realisation of the growth of care in her relationship with a tender realism, Siobhan O’Kelly as Doris the Countess does brassy brave northern gritty glamour girl with bravado and turns the play around with her silent acceptance of her husband’s death,  it was a lovely theatrical moment and possibly one of the finest Rattigan moments I’ve seen on stage.

The rest of cast were good although often playing the supporting characters for laughs, but perhaps this in the intention of Director Justin Audibert; making the most of the clipped understated dialogue with as much emotive pressure as possible in this play and the teasing out of the stoic make-do-and-mend sense of humour. At its heart it is about duty and the silent carrying out of it, in all different ways, in big public ways and small intimate moments and it succeed in making the various love interests, pressures and conflicts of the couples in the play seem vivid and engaging.

I’m not a fan of Rattigan, nor of Bomber Command and their notorious activities during the war, but this is not the ground of the narrative and it’s worth putting aside any political post war thoughts and see this play for what it is: a wartime play, written during the war, by a fighting man, about the way war changes everything. This is a fine play, well written with some dramatic touches which, over time, have become less florid and faded down into really affecting and touching moments of honest hesitant un-British declaration. It’s unusual to see a play with deception as its narrative force which deals with tender unsaid honesty so well but Rattigan nails it here and it’s exactly Rattigan’s mercilessly tender examination of the British attitude of stiff upper lip and repressed emotion that makes this play such a pleasure to watch.

The set is cosy and warm, evocative of a hotel lobby in some coastal Lincolnshire town, the costumes mostly touch perfect and bringing a sense of occasion to the characters and their motives. The lighting and sound ambiance was managed very well and effective in bringing up the sense of background action and off stage drama that would have been a constant hum during wartime, sound designer Dominic Bilkey did a grand job  setting the atmosphere just right.

All in all this was a pleasant evening out at this charming theater; it really is a lovely venue, comfortable, charming, with a reasonably priced bar, free parking directly outside!       In the hurry to make it to the show on time i left my keys in the door of the car, parked just to one side of the theatre, when i returned, in a little worry, some hours later there was my car, untouched, keys still dangling in the door, you gotta love Eastbourne it’s certainly living its values.

You can’t fault this for an evening out of the bustle of Brighton and Flare Path is a competent exercise in nostalgic restoration which holds this solid play up to the light, and finds no real fault with it,  runs it with a mostly enthusiastic cast who gave us a few hours of solid engaging entertainment.

Minister promises quicker refunds for train delays

Rail Minister, announces refunds owed to passengers when services are delayed or cancelled will in future be automatically repaid electronically.

Claire Perry MP
Claire Perry MP

Currently, customers are entitled to a refund if a train is subject to an extended delay or cancellation. However, passengers must fill in a form to request their money back, with refunds often taking weeks to arrive.

Under new rules passengers will receive automatic compensation for delayed journeys and compensation will start to be paid in cash for the first time this summer, instead of in rail vouchers.

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven has welcomed the Minister’s announcement.

Simon Kirby MP
Simon Kirby MP

He said; “I am very pleased at the Minister’s announcement. While passengers have technically been entitled to refunds for years, the process of applying for one is so convoluted it understandably puts most people off bothering.

“This is a very welcome change to the rules which will mean that commuters are not short-changed by poor services and by cancellations beyond their control when they have already paid for their tickets.

“I have been pressing for a long time for rail service improvements such as this and have held a number of meetings with the Rail Minister to raise issues of concern to constituents, and this is something I will continue to do.”
