Martin Fisher R.I.P.

Professor Martin Fisher one of the worlds leading HIV physicians and specialists passed away last night.

Martin Fisher

MARTIN was the first professor of HIV medicine at Brighton & Sussex Medical School, he was an honorary consultant physician in sexual health and HIV at Brighton and Sussex University Hospital (BSUH) and was instrumental in the development of the HIV department there since being in post in 1995.

All staff and colleagues at BSUH this morning received the following message:

“It is with terrible sadness that we are writing to share the devastating news with you that our dear colleague and friend Professor Martin Fisher passed away unexpectedly last night. We know how hard this news will be for some of you to hear as it has been for us. Our thoughts are with his partner Adrian, close friends and colleagues in the Lawson Unit, Elton John unit and across the Trust as well as at the University. We know that his colleagues in the Lawson Unit have sent out a message to his patients who will be equally devastated.”

“In his hugely successful career he has worked with many of us and his influence and legacy will remain with us for years to come. Martin was so much more than a colleague to many of us and he will be missed very much.”

All of his patients received the following message from the Lawson Unit:

“Today we received some devastating news and it is with terrible sadness that we are writing to share this with you. We heard from his partner this morning that our friend and colleague Professor Martin Fisher died suddenly and unexpectedly (yesterday). We know how hard this news will be for some of you to hear and we hope you will forgive us telling you by email but we wanted to do our utmost to ensure you heard it directly from us first. As you can imagine we are all in shock as we know you will be too, if you knew him. Martin was so much more than a colleague to all of us and so much more than a doctor to many of you, and we will all miss him terribly.

“Over the next few weeks and months we will find fitting and appropriate ways to remember Martin and pay tribute to the enormous contribution he made to our services and to his patients.”

Martin was due to give two presentations at the British HIV Association Spring Conference (BHIVA) that starts this evening in Brighton.

The BHIVA have issued the following statement to all its members saying:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Professor Martin Fisher who died last night. BHIVA expresses its deepest condolences to Martin’s partner Adrian, his friends, family and colleagues. We shall all miss him greatly.”

‘Your little piece of sunshine’

East Sussex Credit Union promotion offers reduced rates for larger loans.

East Sussex Credit Union (ECSU) has launched Your little piece of sunshine a new promotion that will reduce the cost of its larger loans by a full 1.00% AER.

Ann Hickey, General Manager at ESCU says: “Although we have a growing reputation for providing smaller personal loans to our members, we can actually lend up to £25,000 and want to spread the good news. Aside from those members wanting to borrow for a car, home improvements or family events like a wedding, we also want to support small, local businesses – especially start ups or those looking to expand their existing operations. Hopefully this promotion will attract those looking for a more affordable, ethical alternative to borrowing from a High Street lender.”

More affordable options

The Your Little Piece of Sunshine reduced rate offer is exclusively available for loans agreed from April 13 2015 for new and existing members of East Sussex Credit Union and for loan values from £10,000 up to £25,000 (£15,000 net of savings).

Ann continued: “With this new promotion we want to offer a little ray of sunshine by offering reduced loan rates for local people seeking larger loans, particularly those who might not enjoy a ‘squeaky clean’ credit record. Unlike most competitors, we don’t charge any arrangement fees, nor do we charge for early repayment. All our loans also include a mandatory savings element, meaning that come the end of the loan period there is a nice cash sum that can provide valuable additional security and help create a buffer in the event of unexpected future expenses.  And for those that have some credit issues in their past – a loan with us will help to rebuild their credit score”.

East Sussex Credit Union Ltd (ESCU) is a not for profit savings and loans co-operative, which has been operating locally since 2000. Authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority, it is one of the leading credit unions in the UK. The organisation has recently enjoyed rapid growth, with membership at an all-time high and almost £2 million in member savings.

Anyone can join as long as they either live or work in East Sussex or Brighton and Hove, or are a member of UNITE the Union in the South East of England. You do not need to be in a job, have money behind you, or have a squeaky clean credit history to become a member.

As a mutual, ESCU takes its social and charitable objectives very seriously. It aims to provide high quality, sustainable and easy to access local savings and loans to meet the needs of the people of East Sussex.

Party leaders praise HIV prevention drug PrEP

HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust welcomes comments in support of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) from party leaders David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband.

Terrence HIggins Trust

THE three main party leaders expressed praise for PrEP in a series of election interviews with Gay Times magazine. PrEP is taken before sex to reduce the risk of getting HIV. It is currently not available in the UK but Terrence Higgins Trust is advocating for PrEP to be made available on the NHS because it has the potential to prevent new infections among some of those at greatest risk of acquiring HIV.

The results of the PROUD study published in February, a UK-based clinical trial looking at the effectiveness of PrEP for gay men who are at high risk of acquiring HIV, showed the drug reduced the risk of getting HIV by 86%. The reduction in HIV infections as a result of PrEP was much greater than the researchers expected when they were planning the trial.

When asked by Gay Times:

“Do you agree with the National AIDS Trust and other charities that PrEP should be made available on the NHS to gay men who need it as soon as possible?”

The three leaders gave the following responses:

David Cameron MP

Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, said: “I think it’s fantastic that over the course of the last 30 years, AIDS has gone from being a very serious and fatal disease to one that can be treated – and is now on the cusp of being one that can be prevented. Too many people have lost loved ones and seen friends and families suffer from AIDS, so it’s right that we look very carefully at PrEP. However decisions on individual drug availability are made by the independent National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and not politicians – so it’d be inappropriate of me to prejudge their decision.”

Ed Miliband MP

Leader of the Labour Party, Ed Miliband MP, said: “The recent medical evidence that’s come out about PrEP is obviously very positive – it’s a positive step forward. And it could make a real difference. There’s obviously proper clinical processes that we’ve got to go through, with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), to look at this. I’m obviously sympathetic, and the evidence is incredibly encouraging, but this has got to be led medically.”

NIck Clegg MP

Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, said: “The NHS is looking. We’ve had these studies and tests – like the PROUD Study – which appears to have confirmed the clinical effect of the drug in terms of preventing HIV. But the NHS now, quire rightly, is looking at what this actually means. Would it be clinically prescribed? And to who? And for what periods of time? Is it a one-off prescription or is it an ongoing thing? That’s all being looked into at the moment.

“PrEP sounds like a fantastic medical innovation which can keep people safe from HIV infection, but of course, what we wouldn’t want is for people to take it and risk contracting other illnesses and infection because they practice less protected sex. I don’t think we should, under any circumstances, regard any drug as a sort of wonder drug that suddenly means all risk is removed. But at the end of the day, it’s up to the NHS to look at the studies and work things out as they so publicly need to be worked out.”

Dr Rosemary Gillespie, CEO at Terrence Higgins Trust

Dr Rosemary Gillespie, Chief Executive at Terrence Higgins Trust, concluded saying: “This cross-party praise for PrEP goes to show just how seriously PrEP is being taken as a vital tool in our efforts to reduce HIV transmission in the UK. We need to turn these positive words into action so PrEP can be made available on the NHS for those most at risk as soon as possible.”
