‘Rainbow Initiative’ will benefit LGBTQ shoppers

New Rainbow Initiative means Australian LGBTIQ shoppers can give back to their community when buying on-line.

Rainbow Initiative

FIFTEEN Australian LGBTIQ Charities and community groups have joined forces with the Global Fundraising Initiative to create a new online donation service.

The Rainbow Initiative is an online shopping site where people can shop for products and services from Australian retailers and donate for free to a favoured LGBTIQ charity.  The free donation is created from sales commission on items purchased via the Rainbow Initiative website.

The new service will work with the existing Global Fundraising Initiative, an Australian based company that provides free and unique fundraising services to Charities and Not for Profits in Australia and around the world through shopping.

“Shopping with the Rainbow Initiative’s participating retailers doesn’t cost shoppers any more than buying from them direct and the donation comes from the commission we are paid on the sale,” said Mr Alex Jordan, CEO of the Global Fundraising Initiative.  “We have created a way for our community to donate to charity for free.”

More than 100 participating Rainbow Initiative retailers sell clothes, shoes, beauty products, flowers, sporting goods, office supplies, book hotels and even credit cards, insurance policies or mobile phone account.  There is also a food home delivery service participating.

“Australians are spending around $30 billion a year through online shopping. We are hoping that the community will use the Rainbow Initiative first to find their online retailers before going anywhere else so that the community charities and groups get the support they need,” added Mr Jordan.

Australian charities and community groups participating in the Rainbow Initiative include Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, Twenty10 incorporating GLCS, WA AIDS Council, Positive Life SA, NSW Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby, GLWA the Matrix Guild of Victoria, Living Positive Victoria, InterPride, The Pinnacle Foundation, the Gender Centre, pflag Perth and the Transgender Anti-Violence Project.

People buying products via the Rainbow Initiative can sign up to the site so that commission generated when they shop is donated in their name and to their nominated charity. They will also receive a tax deductible receipt for the donation amount.

“The Rainbow Initiative is the one making the donation, not the shopper,” explained Mr Jordan. “We make the donation in the shoppers name as our way of saying thank you and encouraging them to come back and shop again so even more money can be donated.  It is the shopper after all that is spending the money.”

Participating shoppers receive an email confirmation of their purchase listing the donation amount. The tax deductible receipt also acts as confirmation that the donation has been paid.

The Rainbow Initiative went live in Australia, 20 February, 2015.  Current plans are to expand the Rainbow Initiative into the USA in March/April 2015.

Kemptown MP discusses traveller encampments with Brighton Police Chief

Last week, Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, met with Neville Kemp, the Chief Superintendent of Brighton and Hove Police.

THE purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of a High Court injunction on unauthorised traveller encampments in the city, and the threat of even more encampments in the city this summer.

Following recent calls for Brighton and Hove City Council to follow the example set by Harlow Council and Essex County Council, Mr Kirby met with the Chief Superintendent of Brighton and Hove Police to discuss whether a High Court injunction here in Brighton could make the policing of unauthorised traveller encampments easier.

During the meeting, the Chief Superintendent explained that an injunction similar to that in Harlow may make policing unauthorised encampments both easier and more effective. Sussex Police and the City Council say they are watching developments with interest and will then consider whether the use of injunctions could help reduce the impact of dealing with unauthorised encampments on Police resources.

The Chief Superintendent also explained that the police are expecting there to be an above average number of unauthorised encampments in the city this summer, owing to the ongoing redevelopment of the Horsdean Transit site, after which they expect the situation to substantially improve for years to come.

Mr Kirby said: “On Friday I met with the Chief Superintendent and used the opportunity to discuss, in particular, Harlow Council’s new approach to dealing with unauthorised traveller encampments. I am pleased that the police will be monitoring the situation closely, and agree that this could make policing easier and more effective.

“Many residents will be concerned by the prediction of even more unauthorised encampments this year and it underlines the importance of the Council and police having in place a strategy to tackle the problem.

I hope that this warning will spur the Council into action, and that they will move quickly to learn from the actions taken by Harlow Council, which I believe could make a real difference for residents here in Brighton and Hove, who all too often see their open spaces fall victim to unauthorised encampments.”

During the meeting Mr Kirby also raised the issue of antisocial behaviour in Woodingdean and community safety in the Dorset Gardens area of Brighton.

No equality for gay partners in the Queen’s and House of Lord’s honours system

Days before the first anniversary of same-sex marriages being legalised in the UK, the discussion about gay couples receiving the same title privileges as their heterosexual counterparts is intensifying.

CURRENTLY, the wives of men awarded a knighthood or peerage are entitled to call themselves Lady. However, gay male married partners are presently not given a title.

For example, when Sir Richard Branson received a knighthood, his wife became Lady Joan Branson.

However, when Sir Elton John married, David Furnish he did not receive a similar title.

Mark Llewellyn-Slade

Mark Llewellyn-Slade, Managing Director of Awards Intelligence, said: A suitable title for a male partner might be: “The Honourable…”

This would mean that Sir Elton’s partner would be known as The Honourable David Furnish. The same rights would of course be given to all relevant partners in same-sex marriages.

Mark continued: “While this dollop of inequality is unlikely to affect a huge number of people, the issue should be addressed sooner rather than later as it gives out the wrong message to the gay community and wider society. We know from experience that titles are important to the wives of titled men, why should partners in a gay marriage not benefit from the same privileges? It would be a shame to see titles for wives of titled men removed to achieve equality, I’d much rather see everyone get a title, whatever that might be”.
