THE Flying Weasels, team lineup of Gav Orton, James Duggan, Alexi McCreedy, Oli Peart, Gavin Roffe and Mark Whelan not only won the quiz but scooped the £300 bonus prize donated by the Camelford Arms.

The evening raised a brilliant £350.10 for the Rainbow Fund, who give grants to LGBT/HIV organisations and groups in Brighton and Hove who provide effective front line services to the LGBT/HIV community in the city.

James Duggan from the Flying Weasels said: “Me and the rest of the team were completely over the moon last night about finally winning The Camelford Quiz, which was held in partnership of the Brighton Bear Weekend and Rainbow Fund. We’ve been attending this quiz for nearly 3 years now, and, despite achieving some very respectable final scores, we’d never walked away with the £300 big cash prize.. until now!

“I took my partner Gavin along for the very first time, so we nominated him to pick the winning envelope at the end.. beginner’s luck!

“We had a great time, as we always do and it was fantastic to see so many people there buying raffle tickets to support Brighton Bear Weekend and the Rainbow Fund.”

Hilary Benn MP listens to local campaigners’ concerns

Campaigners meet Shadow Secretary of State Hilary Benn MP to express concerns about local developments.

Hilary Benn MP:
Hilary Benn MP: Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government

NANCY Platts, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven held a roundtable meeting today, Thursday March 5, bringing together campaign groups with the Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hilary Benn MP, to express concerns about local developments.

Residents, who have been campaigning to save woods, fields and allotments in Craven Vale, Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Woodingdean, wanted greater powers to give them sustainable long term protection and more say in how their local areas would be developed.

Concerns were raised about congested roads and the high levels of pollution as well as the destruction of local woods and wildlife habitats.

Nancy said: “I have been supporting local groups who feel powerless in the face of attempts by developers to build on every green space in and around our villages and now even our allotments. I am very pleased that Hilary Benn accepted my invitation to meet residents, listen to their stories and respond to the issues they raised. I will continue to campaign with local people to oppose over development that will destroy woodland and damage historic villages.”

Hilary Benn, awarded the South Downs, National Park status in 2009 when Secretary of State for the Environment.

He said: “It was a pleasure to be back in Brighton again where I went to university and great to hear directly from local residents.

“A Labour Government will reintroduce a strengthened “brownfield first” policy, which will ensure that as much building as possible of homes needed locally takes place on previously developed land. And we will ensure greater transparency in the land market and strengthen powers for local authorities so that communities have more say in how their areas develop over time and where new homes should go.”

PREVIEW: ‘Out From Under A Rock’

Phil Corbett’s Out From Under A Rock, at first glance looks like a collection of possible cartoon video game characters.

Phil CorbettPHIL comes from a background in kid’s TV and game design after all. But upon closer inspection, these cute images are riddled with really dark undertones. Bizarre living pastries, multi headed birds and cats struggling with online dating are just some of the subjects tackled in this large collection of ink works.

If you liked the designs Phil did for AussieBum you’re going to love this show.

PREVIEW: The Lovers by Spun Glass Theatre

Brighton-based Spun Glass Theatre are currently researching and developing a theatre project.

Spun Glass TheatreTHE project examines why we fall in love and what happens when we lose control of our senses, while exploring ideas of gender, sexuality, and LGBTQ representation.

The piece follows the four lovers from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and will feature live onstage animations and soundscapes.

A work-in-progress showing of this piece will take place on Wednesday, March 11 at The Marlborough Theatre from 7.45pm.

Spun Glass Theatre is a Brighton-based theatre company formed in 2009 to create engaging work that examines the nature of love. They have made shows about romances, unrequited love and long-distance relationships. Our work is atmospheric, truthful and intimate.

They focus on devising new theatre pieces by distilling classic texts, infusing autobiographical theatre with well-loved characters from Chekhov, Tennessee Williams and Shakespeare.

Recent work includes the Argus Angel award-winning You Left Me In the Dark, a devised piece of new writing inspired by Chekhov’s The Seagull; Laura, an intimate distillation of Williams’ The Glass Menagerie; and Ink, exploring the personal impact of media scrutiny on national tragedies.

They want to open up their work to audiences across the country; to involve real people in the discussion of LGBTQ representation onstage, and in their production, and to invite them to share their stories.

They have already held two free symposium events at The Blue Man Cafe in Brighton, which featured informal discussions with a panel of representatives from charities and the arts, including Lunch Positive and Mind Out in Brighton.

By opening up the rehearsal process in this way, and by live streaming the symposiums through their YouTube channel (Spun Glass Theatre), they engaged audiences across the country in the discussion of these issues, who joined in at home by asking questions.

Lib Dems angry at being snubbed by Brighton NHS Campaign

Party highlights electoral rules in protest to debate organisers.

Liberal Democrats

BRIGHTON Liberal Democrats have written to Defend the NHS campaign asking why they have been excluded from a series of debates in Brighton and Hove on ‘saving the NHS’.

Sussex Defend the NHS is organising a series of what it calls People’s Debates under the heading Save the NHS. The first one took place in Hove last month, one is scheduled in Pavilion constituency for March 24, and a third in Kemptown for April 9.

However, despite being a party of government which played an important role in the 2010-11 NHS reforms, the Lib Dems have not been asked to take part with Sussex Defend the NHS even advertising the Pavilion debate on its website with the words, “Your chance to question parliamentary candidates: Caroline Lucas (MP, Green), Clarence Mitchell (Con) and Purna Sen (Lab) with speakers from Defend the NHS.”

Paul Chandler
Paul Chandler

In a letter to Sussex Defend the NHS, Brighton & Hove Lib Dems’ chair Paul Chandler, who’s also the party’s parliamentary candidate in Kemptown, attacks the campaign’s decision to exclude the Lib Dems.

Chandler wrote: “We find this very surprising, especially as in government it was Liberal Democrats who stopped Conservative privatisation plans and reversed some of Labour’s policies which meant private health companies got special favours.”

He has also drawn the campaign’s attention to the Electoral Commission’s guidance on hustings during the general election period. This says that if the organisers of hustings “selectively invite candidates or parties to your hustings and do not have impartial reasons for doing so” then there are implications for the parties that are invited in terms of declaring their election expenses.

Chandler goes on to ask Sussex Defend the NHS whether it has made the three parties it has invited aware of this regulation.

Chris Bowers
Chris Bowers

The Lib Dems’ candidate for Brighton Pavilion, Chris Bowers, said: “On a day when David Cameron has shown his contempt for democracy by saying he is effectively above television debates, it looks very bad for a campaign that has broad support to be excluding the party that put the brakes on the Conservatives’ plans for the NHS in the coalition negotiations that took place in the first year of this Parliament.

“Some of the damage done to the NHS by successive governments in recent years cannot be undone, but Defend the NHS can undo the damage it has caused by inviting the Lib Dems and Ukip to its Pavilion hustings March 24. I hope they are big enough to do so, as we wish their campaign well.”
