THE convention is the LGBT tourism industry’s premier networking and educational event, as well as an opportunity to acknowledge the work of individuals and businesses that have improved the landscape of gay and lesbian travel.

Award recipients are selected from the association’s member businesses in 80 countries and other allies. “It’s our way to celebrate the incredible work being done to make the world more welcoming for LGBT people,” says IGLTA Chair Dan Melesurgo. “This year’s diverse recipients are located in Curaçao, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Colombia, but their outreach extends far beyond the borders of their home countries, reflecting the truly global scope of our association.”

This year’s recipients are:

•       Hanns Ebensten Hall of Fame Award: Since 1990, Olivia, the travel company for lesbians, has taken over 200,000 women on cruise, resort, adventure and riverboat vacations all over the world, including Antarctica. Olivia always charters entire ships or buys out whole resorts to provide a safe space for women to be out.

•       Community Honor (based in IGLTA’s convention host city): The Los Angeles LGBT Centre traces its roots to 1969 when its founders first offered client services. Today, with more than 450 employees and 3,000 volunteers, the centre is the world’s largest provider of programs and services for LGBT people and a member of the Clinton Global Initiative.

•       Destination Pioneer: The Curaçao Tourist Board put this island in the Dutch Caribbean on the map for LGBT travel with its “Live and Let Live” philosophy and the 2004 launch of GayCuracao.com. Curaçao has created several LGBT marketing campaigns and continues to make strides in equality for the gay community in an effort to become one of the most welcoming destinations for LGBT travelers in the Caribbean – a region that often makes headlines for homophobia

•       LGBT Event Pioneer: Doug Swallow is the founder of Gay Day at Disney, which began with a small LGBT group wearing red shirts to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando on the first Saturday in June and evolved into a multi-day commercial event that attracts upwards of 100,000 LGBT travelers to Central Florida.

•       Networking: Cámara de Comerciantes LGBT de Colombia (the Colombia LGBT Chamber of Commerce) was created in 2012 in recognition of the country’s emerging LGBT market. The group collaborates with the local government as well as national chambers in the U.S. and Argentina to provide support to local LGBT businesses and host the annual WeTrade Business Summit in Bogotá.

•       Travel Writer: In a career spanning 14 years in both mainstream and LGBT travel media Jurriaan Teulings has extensively traveled in some 80+ countries, breaking stereotypes along the way. His official home is Amsterdam, but he spends 8-10 months a year on the road, where he has shimmied with Interpol-listed fugitive chicken thieves and chummed up with Indian royalty in his commitment to telling authentic, unexpected stories.

•       Ambassador of the Year: Jonathan Mountford is the managing director of the award-winning travel marketing and PR agency made.  He represents IGLTA in the U.K., sits on the British Tourism Group and chairs the Americas Interest Group at VisitBritain.

PREVIEW: Essence of Ireland: Eastbourne

A compelling love story inspired by true events, Essence of Ireland is set against the music and dance of Ireland, USA and Spain.

Essence of Ireland

SET against the backdrop of Ireland, England and America in the 19th century, Essence of Ireland tells the story of love, joy, happiness and heartache endured by Coro McGowen and Sean Dempsey as they are separated by emigration from each other and their beloved Ireland.

Creative Director and co-writer, Ged Graham, says: “We set out not just to tell a powerful love story; but to tell a bigger tale based on true events about the love between a man and his country – something which audiences really relate to. Our show is guaranteed to entertain and move audiences young and old, whether through our hard hitting story or through our quality music and dance extravaganza!”

Essence of Ireland

As the story moves across to England and then on to America, the show takes you on a journey through many historical events including America’s introduction to rock and roll; and John F Kennedy’s historic presidential visit to Ireland in 1963.

Simultaneously heart-breaking and heart-warming, many of the much loved Irish songs that run so deep within the country’s music heritage are seamlessly entwined within the show’s engaging story, including Galway Girl, Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears, Tell me Ma and Irish Rover along with original scores.

Ross Mills, Director of Production and co-writer of Essence of Ireland, says: “The Irish have a cultural identity like no other and that pride in their cultural identity, heritage and traditions, manifests itself in the global phenomenon that is ‘St Patrick’s Day. The tour, which has been scheduled around St Patricks Day 2015, aims to really capture that authentic Irish feeling and celebrate this infectious heritage, which is now shared by all cultures worldwide.

“The 2015 tour will include new material and new costumes so we are very excited about getting back on the road again.”

Essence of Ireland has a world class and multinational ensemble all of whom are immensely proud of their Irish heritage and deep seated roots; giving a huge weight to the production’s strong sense of place and Irish identity.

SATURDAY’S game with Exeter City at Fratton Park has been designated to support the 2015 Football v Homophobia campaign. All the players will be wearing special tee-shirts in the pre-match warm up which Portsmouth Football Club have sponsored.
Representatives from Portsmouth Pride 2015, which is organising an event on June 20 in the city have also been invited to the game.

Pompey club captain Johnny Ertl, said: “This is a vital campaign as it is important football shows respect for everyone involved in the sport. Whether you are a player, fan, match official or staff member, the crucial thing is our mutual love of the game. I am proud to be able to back this campaign on behalf of the club”
Johnny received the tee-shirts at the new training ground from Portsmouth Chairman Ken Malley.

Ken said: “Inclusion and diversity are high on the Trust agenda as we want to ensure that as a community club, Pompey is a team everyone is comfortable to support. I was delighted when the club invited us to sponsor these tee-shirts, as it shows both organisations are very much on the same wavelength.”
The FA and Football League-backed Football v Homophobia campaign has been running for five years now and Pompey first supported it last season in the home game against Wimbledon.

Colin Farmery, who is responsible for Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination at the club, added: “We have a clear strategy to ensure Pompey is a club which appeals to everyone in our community and supporting campaigns like this are a high-profile way to underline discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated at the club”.

The shirts worn by the players will be auctioned in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out on our website for more information
