More say promised in the future of Brighton Marina for local people

Brighton Marina could be designated a Business Neighbourhood Area – the first of its kind in Brighton & Hove.

Brighton Marina

A GROUP of people living and working at the Marina, along with two councillors representing the area, have made an application to Brighton & Hove City Council to gain formal approval for a Neighbourhood Forum and Business Neighbourhood Area.

The application will be considered by the council’s Economic Development and Culture Committee at a meeting on January 15.

If the proposed Neighbourhood Forum and Business Neighbourhood Area are approved, the forum will have the power to draw up its own Neighbourhood Development Plan which enables a community to set out planning policies in relation to the development and use of land in the area.

Wider public consultation would then be carried out to give other people a chance to have their say. If adopted, the plan then becomes a formal part of the planning system, and would be taken into account when the local planning authority is deciding planning applications for the area.

The area covered by the Neighbourhood Area and Forum applications is bounded by the cliffs to the north of the Marina, the harbour arms to the south, east and west where it is also bounded by the access road.

Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the city’s Economic Development and Culture Committee, said: “Brighton Marina neighbourhood forum is seeking the opportunity to develop a shared vision for the area and have a greater say in shaping the development and growth of the area.

“The council’s planning team has been supporting members of the forum through the process and the application for a Business Neighbourhood Area is the first in Brighton & Hove.”

A group of Laureus fundraisers joined former Olympic Champions Sally Gunnell and Daley Thompson today to benefit from an exclusive run training session ahead of the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon.

Runners were provided with a series of general fitness, nutrition and hydration tips from England athletics coach Nick Anderson, before being put through their paces at the Withdean Athletics track in Brighton with Daley and Sally.

Daley, a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, said: “Training sessions like today can really help to boost motivation. Sally and I have passed on a few tips and now it is down to the runners to put in the hard work ahead of race day. I wish them the best of luck for both the competition and their fundraising efforts. The money they raise will help Laureus to fund sports coaches across the country, who will use sport to help improve the lives of disadvantaged young people.”

Sally Gunnell added: “I’ve really enjoyed meeting the fundraisers today and I hope that we have provided the runners with some useful advice ahead of their big race. I’m always impressed to see people setting themselves fitness goals and combining this with a fundraising target too. Good luck to all the Laureus fundraisers on race day!”

Laureus fundraiser, Helen Cowan from Brighton, who attended the training session said: “It has been a fantastic day, I’ve picked up some really useful tips, although I think it is has now prompted even more questions about my training! I’ve run over ten marathons, including the Brighton Half Marathon, in the past, but am hoping today’s training session will help me to improve my race day performance this year. I decided to support the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation this year because of the work they do to help the lives of young people across the UK. I look forward to hearing how the money raised will be put towards a great cause.”

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation’s aim is to help change social problems around the world. Since 2000 they have raised over €60 million which has improved the lives of millions of young people.

Funds raised by #TeamSportforGood runners taking part in the Vitality Run Series, which includes seven half marathons and one 10km race between now and October, will go towards training 1,000 sports coaches who will work with 100,000 young people across the across the UK, using the power of sport to change their lives.

Laureus is a universal movement that celebrates the power of sport to bring people together as a force for good.

Laureus is composed of three core elements – the Laureus World Sports Academy, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Laureus World Sports Awards – which collectively celebrate sporting excellence and use sport as the means to promote social change.

The first Patron of Laureus was Nelson Mandela. At the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000, he said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.” This has become the philosophy of Laureus; the driving force behind its work.

New Russian driving law discriminates against trans people

Under new Russian legislation, transsexuals and trans* people will no longer qualify for driving licences.

Russians ban trans* drivers

RUSSIAN legislators complain there are too many road accidents in Russia today and are tightening medical controls to ban people from driving, by listing fetishism, exhibition and voyeurism as ‘mental disorders’.

The Association of Russian Lawyers for Human Rights says the new law is ‘discriminatory’ while the head of Russia’s Professional Drivers Union says the tightening of medical requirements is ‘fully justified.’

The move has been condemned by human rights lawers all over the world and follows the imposition of an anti gay law in 2013 making the promotion of ‘non-traditional lifestyles’ in Russia, illegal.
