IN A LETTER to MPs, Mike Penning, the Minister of State for Police, Criminal Justice and Victims, has announced the Government will amend the Serious Crime Bill to increase protections for victims of the practice.

Measures announced include:

• Introducing a new offence of failing to protect a girl from risk of FGM

• Changing the law to grant lifelong anonymity for victims of FGM

• Introducing a civil protection order to protect potential or actual victims of FGM which will operate in a similar way to a Forced Marriage Protection Order.

Simon said: “I am pleased that the Government is committed to stamping out FGM and is moving further to support victims of this terrible practice.

“Every crime has a victim and the victims of FGM deserve as much protection as the Government can provide.

The Liveable Lives project brings together academics and activists in the UK and India to identify innovative ways to create positive social change in the everyday lives of LGBTQ people.

The 18 month project is backed by £193,087 of funding from the Economic and Social Research Council. It will be delivered by Dr Katherine Browne of the University of Brighton and Dr Niharika Banerjea of the University of Southern Indiana in the USA, in partnership with Sappho For Equality, the Indian sexuality rights organisation.

Dr Katherine Browne, is Assistant Head of the University of Brighton’s School of Environment and Technology.

She said: “We know from our previous research that LGBTQ people can face discrimination and inequality in all areas of life. While introducing legislation and policies to address these inequalities can make a difference, it is only one step we can take to improve the quality of LGBTQ people’s everyday lives.

“The Liveable Lives project will work closely will LGBTQ people to understand their experience of daily life and understand what action is needed to make their lives more liveable. Our aim is to provide an academic basis for sexuality rights activists LGBTQ people around the world”.

Liveable Lives is one of thirteen projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council as part of its 2014 transformative research initiative. Keep fit and make new friends with monthly Healthwalks

Brighton & Hove Healthwalks are launching a range of new monthly walks for LGBT people and their friends, starting on November 2.

LGBT Health Walks

THE FIRST walk starts from St Ann’s Well Gardens in Hove at 2pm and at different locations around the city thereafter.

The walks will be normally held of the first Sunday of the month and will be linking with LGBT groups, charities, organisations and venues such as THT, Allsorts, Older & Out, Charles Street, Legends, the A Bar and members of the public to provide a safe and social way of improving physical and mental health and wellbeing for the community.

On December 7 the group will be meeting at Charles street for a Festive “Christmas Jumper Walk” around Queens Park and back to the bar. Wear your Christmas jumpers, get dressed up and make an effort. Drag Queens especially are invited to join the walk. Panto drag would be wonderful.

Healthwalks are all under 4 miles in length (LGBT walks are between 1 and 3 miles) and are free, easily accessible, led by trained volunteer walk leaders and designed to help people to take the first steps at improving their own health. Walking; especially in green spaces and open land, has been proven to help with treating weight loss, diabetes, depression, some cancer treatment, blood pressure and countless other conditions and many of the walks are buggy and wheelchair friendly.

Over the last ten years these walks have helped thousands of local people improve their physical and mental health and find out more about the wonderful places to walk in Brighton& Hove.

Healthwalks are a great way to be more active, get out in the fresh air and make new friends. They are friendly, supportive and ideal for those who want to start exercising in a gentle and safe way, as well as those who want to walk regularly but don’t have the time to attend longer walks. 90% of regular walkers say their health has improved and they have made new friends. As well as the monthly LGBT walk there are 15 weekly walks, 4 monthly walks and several themed one off walks.

The HealthWalks scheme has recently won the Queens Award for volunteering and are looking for more members of the LGBT community to help lead more of these walks.
