Sunday Lunch at Lunch Positive

In addition to the weekly Friday HIV Lunch Club, Lunch Positive will be running a monthly Sunday Lunch for people with HIV starting November 2.

Lunch PositiveTHE SUNDAY LUNCH will be held at the Lunch Positive hired venue, Dorset Gardens Methodist Church and will take place on the first Sunday of each month during the autumn and winter.

The idea for the Sunday Lunch came from existing members, and people who want to share a meal with peers but can’t attend the Friday Lunch Club.

The Sunday Lunch will be a safe and supportive space, where an enjoyable and affordable three course meal is shared. The project is being delivered entirely by volunteers from Lunch Positive and MCC Metropolitan Community Church. People coming along for lunch are all welcome to get involved with helping if they would like.

Gary Pargeter, Volunteer Project Manager, said: “We’re incredibly pleased to be offering an extra opportunity for peers to enjoy a good meal, meet others in a confidential environment, and benefit from spending time together. It’s a space for community, where people can be themselves. Our biggest hope is that the monthly Sunday Lunch will attract people who are unable to come along on Fridays as well as our existing members, and people we haven’t seen for a while.

“Everyone with HIV is welcome! We know that coming along to something new is not always easy for everyone, and as well as our members we have a team of friendly and approachable volunteers to help people feel comfortable. Please come and join us!”

REVIEW: Best of the Fest

The Best of the Fest night always highlights the best stand up comedians who are appearing in the Brighton Comedy Festival.

WEB.600
LAST NIGHT’S SHOW, MC´d by Andrew Maxwell in his very ”Orish” way, was full of his usual slightly twisted observations about being an Irish man in England and his merciless direct engagement with the audience went down well. His foul mouthed interval tirade was a bit of an eye opener too, but he did what a good host should do and kept the energy high and the night moving along.
Nish Kumar
Nish Kumar
First up was Nish Kumar who was a real treat, full of wonderful comments and real world experience about being multicultural and having a complex identity in modern Britain, a real tonic to the nasty right wing stuff we constantly  from the press at the moment. His personal experience about the racism he’s been targeted with was both funny and disturbing and his airport experiences very funny indeed, even when I cringed for him and his endless patience at the ignorance of the  world. I’d like to lock him in a room with Nigel Farrage for an hour.

Glenn Wool
Glenn Wool
Canadian Glenn Wool was rather naughty and thrilled the crowd with his very un-pc comments. He is also very cute and flirted with the audience to their great delight. His comedy is near the knuckle and he enjoys shocking you with the most charming smile on his face, a real teaser!
My favourite about how we wanted to be registered as a sex offender so he could fly without crying kids made the audience roar, his timing was excellent and his world traveller anecdotes both well observed and spot on. He´s one to watching is Glenn.
Local boy George Lewis was up next with tales of his childhood and how he came to be a nerd he´s the winner of the Squawker Award and although a bit hit and miss his jokes were well thought out, funny and  strong. I unfortunately had to leave at the interval as the show rang seriously over time, so missed the delightful Kerry Godliman , who I was so looking forward to, as I’d heard great things about her, and Lloyd Langford who I’ve seen before and enjoyed.

There are another three of these nights to come. This was a strong, varied line up but i did start thinking when did stand up comedy get so potty mouthed though?  It’s been a long time since I’ve fucking heard so much fucking swearing on the fucking stage.

Action to tackle dangerous parking around schools

Action days are being held around four schools in Brighton & Hove this week to highlight the dangers of parking on pavements and grass verges.

WEB.600

DURING the week Brighton & Hove City Council road safety staff, parking enforcement officers and police officers will be out and about in streets around schools where there have been reports of inconsiderate parking putting children’s safety at risk.

Motorists who persist in driving and parking on pavements and verges around schools could receive fines.

Action days are being held on:

* Tuesday, October 21 AM: Rudyard Kipling Primary School, Woodingdean. Centered around Chalkland Rise, Downs Valley Road and Crescent Drive South
* Wednesday, October 22 PM: Westdene Primary School, Bankside, Brighton. Centered around: Bankside, Barn Rise and Dene Vale
* Thursday, October 23 AM: Aldrington CE Primary School, Hove. Centered around Eridge Road junction with Nevill Road, and both sides of Nevill Road between nos. 120 and 156 inclusive.
* Friday October 24 PM: Hangleton Infant and Junior Schools, Hove. Centered around top end of Dale View and junctions with Summerdale & Gleton Roads

Enforcement action will be taken against illegal, inconsiderate and unsafe parking and poor driver behaviour. This includes parking on double yellow lines or other waiting and loading restrictions, driving and parking on verges and footways, use of mobile phones when driving and any other road traffic offence.

Cllr Pete West

Councillor Pete West, chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee said:
“Our Safer Routes to School programmes are encouraging more and more children to travel to the classroom on foot, bike or scooter. Therefore it is vital to ensure that nearby pavements and junctions are kept free from obstruction, and motorists behave considerately to enable everyone to travel safely to and from school.”

The enforcement complements the council’s Park Safe, Walk Safe campaign which aims to raise awareness of Keep Clear zig zag markings outside schools and the need to keep the area safe and congestion free.
