After 40 years of service to the LGBT community, London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard was honoured with the ‘Community Award’ at the Attitude Awards 2014 on Monday night.

THE AWARD was collected on behalf of the charity, at a star-studded ceremony in London, by the Doctor Who and Sherlock writer, Mark Gatiss, who made an urgent appeal for funding to support the service.

Gatiss said of LLGS’s work: “In this day and age of the Internet and social media, gay people have never been more disconnected and people rely more than ever on calm words when you need them most.”

He added: “With recent funding cuts, LLGS rely more than ever on donations and support from the community.”

London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard said they were “delighted” by the honour and echoed Gatiss’ appeal for urgent funding and donations.

A spokesperson said: “This year has seen LLGS celebrate its 40th year but with its core funding now cut, the charity relies increasingly on donations and fundraising to survive.”

Co-chair of the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard, Joe Lee added: “London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard is delighted to receive this award. It recognises the dedication of hundreds of volunteers over the past 40 years who have provided a listening ear and calm words when they were needed the most to over 3 million people.”

LLGS provides free, confidential support and information to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities throughout the UK daily between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. by telephone on 0300 330 0630 and by instant messaging at www.llgs.org.uk

Kemptown MP re-elected as Vice Chair of the HIV/AIDS all-party parliamentary group

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, was re-elected as Vice-Chairman of the HIV/AIDS All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) at its Annual General Meeting in Westminster earlier today.

SIMON HAS been involved with the APPG since his election in 2010, originally undertaking the role of Treasurer before being elected as Vice-Chairman shortly afterwards.

During his time in the APPG, Simon has worked to drive forward the important work of the group, promoting public health and drawing attention to the ongoing fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic both in the UK and overseas.

Alongside his role within the APPG, he has consistantly worked to stand up for those with HIV/AIDS in the UK and abroad by raising awareness of testing during National HIV Testing Week, pushing for further social care support for those living with HIV and raising money in Parliament for the Sussex Beacon, a local HIV Charity.

Speaking from Westminster following his re-election, Simon said: “I am proud to have been an active member of the APPG HIV/AIDS for a number of years, and will continue to be a strong voice for people living with HIV in Brighton Kemptown and across the rest of the UK.

“There are still many more challenges that those living with HIV will face as they grow older, as well as many more people across the country that live with HIV but have not yet been diagnosed. It is for this reason that one of the main aims of the Group has been to work hard to raise awareness of the importance of testing. I am also proud of the work that has been done by the group on helping to fight HIV/AIDS in the developing world, where it continues to be a significant problem.

I look forward to continuing my role as Vice-Chairman of this important Group, and to continue to work hard to represent those who live with HIV/AIDS in the UK and across the world.”

New sexual health service for male sex workers

Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), the UK’s leading HIV and sexual health charity, is launching a new and confidential service exclusively for male sex workers in Brighton and Hove called PRO (TECT).

THT

THE TAILOR-MADE service will provide sex workers with a safe space to talk about anything to do with their sexual health.

PRO (TECT) is for male sex workers living and working in Brighton and Hove and the service includes fast access to the Claude Nicol Centre for sexual health screenings and a free rapid HIV test. Testing involves a finger prick blood test, providing a result in 20 minutes. Trained staff provide one-to-one support before and after the test, and anyone who tests positive will be referred on to a specialist clinic.

Trained staff will provide practical advice and information on how to stay safe and improve their sexual health. The team will also provide free condoms in a range of sizes, lube, and other safer sex materials.

THT hopes that running a service exclusively for male sex workers who cannot access services due to their personal circumstances will encourage them to seek advice and emotional support.

Ross Boseley

Ross Boseley, Health Promotion Coordinator at Terrence Higgins Trust in Brighton, said: “We understand that sex work can be emotionally, mentally and physically demanding. This free, non-judgemental service aims to improve the emotional and physical wellbeing of sex workers by providing practical advice and information. We would like to encourage anyone who feels they can benefit from our service to get in touch.”

THT will also provide the rapid HIV testing service at its centre at 61 Ship Street for sex workers who cannot gain fast access to the service at the Claude Nicol Centre.

Testing is available Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Revenge DJs go sober

DJs Lee Harris and Alex Baker are going Sober for October to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Go Sober for October

ALEX AND LEE ARE Club Revenge’s main floor weekend residents for Friday and Saturday respectively.

During October, they’re living a teetotal life for 31 days, a difficult task as they work in one of the biggest LGBT nightclubs in the country, surrounded by people enjoying themselves and having a drink!

Alex Baker
Alex Baker

Alex’s mother was late diagnosed with bowel cancer when he was at university as an undergraduate. Thanks to the care of the Royal Marsden Hospital and her own willpower, she’s still here today and has passed the crucial ‘five years clear’ milestone.

Alex is now back at university, this time studying for an MA at the University of Sussex. He decided he’d like to raise money and give something back to the cancer care community… and let’s face it, it’s easier to study without a hangover!

The DJs are encouraging people who visit the club or enjoy listening to their podcasts to make a donation to the Go Sober cause rather than buying them a drink this month!

Lee Harris

The sobriety campaign runs until October 31st (Hallowe’en) which will also be the start of the Revenge X-Factor season, when the finalists from the live shows perform at Revenge each Friday after their Sunday elimination.

At midnight on the 31st, they’ll both be celebrating finishing the challenge and are hoping to break the £1.000 mark between the two of them.

You can keep track of their progress via their Facebook pages, where they’ll be keeping a brief diary of the challenges (and hopefully successes) of going sober.

University of Birmingham puts LGBTQ identities at the heart of its curriculum

The University of Birmingham is taking steps to ensure that its curriculum is inclusive towards those with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ) identities.

University of Birmingham

THIS NEW project is innovative within the higher education sector and will draw on current effective practice across the University to develop a guide for colleagues seeking to embed LGBTQ issues in all of the institution’s academic disciplines.

From scoping work carried out by the project co-ordinators, the focus of initiatives to tackle inclusivity previously centred around the social and pastoral experiences of LGBTQ students at the University, rather than on the content and delivery of teaching.

However, students have reported that interactions in lectures, seminars and laboratories are crucial to their experience. Positive experiences signposted include good staff role models and the use of case studies that acknowledge LGBTQ identities.

Nationally, LGBTQ students in higher education experience higher than average dropout rates, use of student support services, challenging circumstances (health and social problems) and suicide rates.

The project at the University of Birmingham will explore the experiences of staff and students through a survey and local-level workshops over two years. These findings will be synthesised with a review of course literature and compared with experience across the education sector internationally.

Champions across the University and the newly-formed Inclusive Curriculum Working Group will promote best-practice recommendations tailored to different academic disciplines. These initiatives will support the work the University already undertakes around equality and diversity, with the institution fully committed as a Stonewall Diversity Champion.

Dr Nicola Gale,
Dr Nicola Gale,

Co-Project Leader Dr Nicola Gale, Lecturer in the Sociology of Health Care, Health Services Management Centre, said: “For LGBTQ students, coming to university can be a really positive experience socially, with the opportunity to meet new people and, here at Birmingham, join the excellent student LGBTQ Association. However, we would like to ensure that this experience translates into the actual content of their courses.”

Dr Nicki Ward
Dr Nicki Ward

Co-Project Leader Dr Nicki Ward, Lecturer in Social Work, School of Social Policy, added: “Our project seeks to identify good practice across all the academic disciplines at Birmingham and to offer practical support to lecturers on making their classroom a more LGBTQ-inclusive place.”

Along with the production of best practice resources and workshops, those involved in the project hope to present their research at the University’s prestigious Teaching and Learning Conference in 2015 and publish results in a peer-reviewed journal.

Findings from the study will also be shared nationally and internationally amongst colleagues at other research-intensive universities.

The University of Birmingham scored nine out of ten in the recent Stonewall University Guide 2015, and has fantastic support and resources for LGBTQ students and a thriving city-centre scene.

The University was named The Times and The Sunday Times University of the Year 2013/14 and is ranked amongst the world’s top 100 institutions.

First year undergraduates are also offered an LGBT housing option when applying for accommodation.
