Chris Steed and Stephen Webb, the gay friends on Channel 4’s Googlebox programme recently appeared on The Million Pound Drop.

Chris and Stephen

They did not win but managed to raise £2,500 each.

Chris said: It’s not every day you get the chance to promote some great charities and get your hands on a million pounds.

“Stephen and I grabbed the opportunity with both hands to raise money for our favourite charities when given the chance.

“What a fantastic experience it was. We were nervous and the questions pretty hard but we both had a great time especially meeting the legendary Davina McCall.

“Unfortunately we did not win, but managed to come away with £2500 each.

“The charities I chose to donate to are Peer Action, Sussex Beacon and Brighton Gay Men’s Chourus. They are all close to my heart and I’ve seen all the great work they all do to improve peoples lives.”

Have your say on new parking zone proposals for Wish Park area

Residents and businesses in Hove are being asked to give their views on what kind of parking scheme they would like to see in the Wish Park area.

Brighton & Hove Council

The council is consulting on two options:

• A new full parking scheme

• Or an extension to the existing ‘light touch’ scheme where controls are in force (see Area W).

Consultation runs until August 29 and there is a staffed exhibition at the Wish Park Pavilion on August 6, 3.30-8.15pm.

Hove residents and businesses also being asked whether to include Bolsover Road in the Area R parking zone which covers the Church Road, Portland Road and Poet’s Corner area and operates between 9am and 8pm.

The proposal includes widening the road to accommodate parking on both sides and introducing a one way system running from North to South.

There is an unstaffed exhibition in Hove Customer Service Centre for both sets of proposals. To give you views online, CLICK HERE:

New high point in accessibility for Brighton Pride 2014

Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum will deliver the most accessible Pride Festival ever through their Accessibility Matters Project this year.

Pride accessibility toilets

Brighton Pride and the LGBT Community Safety Forum have managed to procure not only the usual accessible portable toilets (portaloos) but for the very first time, there will be a fully accessible toilet with a powered hoist on site on Preston Park.

The High Dependency Mobile Disabled Portable Toilet Unit is designed to be both luxurious and easy to use for both the carer and the disabled person. It is endorsed by The Changing Places Consortium/MENCAP.

The H.D.U unit incorporates many facilities for the disabled including a fully automatic tracking hoist, height-adjustable changing couch, support hand rails for ease of movement, and emergency call alarm.

There is more than adequate space in the changing area for the disabled person and up to two carers. A centrally placed toilet with room either side for the carers, and a curtain to allow the disabled person and carer some privacy.

The LGBT Community Safety Forum is delighted to have this unique facility localed at the Access Tent during Brighton and Hove Pride 2014.

Whats Trans*Pride means to me

Dee Burger, current Miss TransLiving 2014, explains what Trans*Pride means to her.

Dee Burger 2014 Miss transLiving International 1st place winner
Dee Burger 2014 Miss transLiving International 1st place winner

Pride has a very special meaning to so many people! For me it’s a time when the entire community comes together and everyone stands together for equality and diversity. A time where we all embrace what makes our community so colourful!

It is also a time for us to remember and honour all our fellow brothers and sisters that have over the years fought so hard to have the freedom so many of us enjoy today. I have been very fortunate to have the support of so many friends and my family over the years, sadly there are also so many of us that have not had that support but at pride everyone feels a part of something.

This is something that we should all take forward on a daily basis and not just show this camaraderie at pride. I am proud to be part of the LGBT community and the colourful umbrella it forms. Winning Miss TransLiving International was a great honour and I am really proud to be an ambassador for the Trans community. I do not believe in moulds or stereotypes. I think that it takes far more courage to be an individual than from part of some idea that society has. For me strength is something that is measured in ones courage to stand up for what you believe in and face your critics. Pride symbolises this as the attitude of so many is “this is me and I am proud of who I am.”

Pride and winning Miss TransLiving International has also allowed me to work very closely with a local business in the city Nice ‘n’ Naughty. Their support and the support of Brighton & Hove City Council has been fantastic and proves that so many businesses fully support the LGBT community.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a fantastic Pride!! Have a fantastic time!!

Philip Price, manager at Nice ‘n’ Naughty on St James Street in Brighton added: “I am so proud of Dee on her crowning of Miss TransLiving International 2014, and a most deserving title.

“As a company Nice ‘n’ Naughty have been at the forefront of changing the boundaries of what an adult store should be, and has always had an all-inclusive view on our customers. I like to think the Brighton store reflects the diversity of the city, and all its residents. Over the years, we have built on our range of products, and in recent months extended our range of items designed for the trans community, for both T-Girls and Boys, and it is something that I am striving to improve on. To be able to show my support in sponsoring Dee throughout her ceremonial year is an honour for both myself and Nice ‘n’ Naughty. Congratulations to a worthy winner.”
