Run for Brighton Pride

Pride to stage an inaugural 5K Rainbow Run, Community Sports Day and Picnic for Disco Diva’s this summer.

Rainbow Run

The first 5k Pride Rainbow Run takes place on Sunday, July 27 on Preston Park.

Every omi and polone is invited to chuck on some lycra and leg warmers, troll along to Preston Park to vada the talented totty and bona bods as they mince around a variety of camp courses.

The Rainbow Run is all about having fun. All ages and abilities are welcome. You choose whether to run, walk, mince or even crawl the 5K.

Hosted by the glorious Dolly Rocket it’s a chance to forget 118 118 and embrace a discotastic fun run full of frolics and camp afro-tastic kitsch glamour.

Rainbow Run has partnered with Minimal Sportswear for the event. Tracey Davenport from Minimal Sportswear is very excited to be part of this new addition to the Brighton Pride Festival calendar.

She said: “The aim of the day aside from raising money for charity is to make people laugh. Laughter and fun does wonders for people and it’s highly infectious! I think this run will do the trick.

“There are going to be four 1K crazy fancy dress stations where each participant grabs some extra disco glamour. At each station there will be disco music and must-hear drag queen comparing. The Rainbow Run is going to be the mother of good times, laughter and running all rolled into one fantastic fun package!”

Registration is £18.50 and includes your donation to the Rainbow Fund and Pride plus your diva Feather Boa, clip on butch YMCA moustaches, hot sexy leg warmers and disco specs. You may also wish to raise extra funds for the Rainbow Fund or the charity of your choice.

Bowls club receives Sports England funding

Peacehaven & Telscombe Cliffs Bowls Club has been awarded a grant of £27,573.00 from Sport England.

The grant will allow the Club to extend its pavilion, improve its facilities, and enable bowls to be played there throughout the entire year.

The club applied for the funding in December 2013 and Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven today spoke of his delight at the announcement of the funding.

Simon said: “Bowls clubs are often at the heart of local communities, and the Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs Bowls Club is no different. Today’s announcement is great news and I am pleased that they will be receiving this funding to improve their facilities, and maintain year round use of the Club.

“I look forward to visiting after the improvements have been completed, and to perhaps try my hand on the new indoor Short Mat.”

New LGBT friendly will writing service

A local legal consultant Nick Betteridge and his gay son Adam have established an LGBT-friendly Will and Lasting Power Of Attorney service called Sussex Wills And Attorneys.

Adam and Nick Betteridge
Adam and Nick Betteridge

Nick, a recently retired legal consultant, has over 45 years experience in the preparation of and advising on Wills and Lasting Powers Of Attorneys. After doing some research with his son Adam, they realised that there were not many LGBT-friendly and cost-effective options in the area for this kind of service.

Adam Betteridge, said: “With equal rights for same sex marriage becoming law as of March 29 here in the UK, its a useful reminder to everyone (whether single, civil partnered or married) of the crucial benefits of getting organised. We’ve come across so many cases where people have overlooked the importance of having an up-to-date Will until it’s too late. I’m sure everyone has heard the horror stories, and so we’ve decided it was the right time to set up an affordable LGBT friendly service to help people protect both themselves and their loved ones.”

Nick Betteridge added: “It is a good idea to review your Will whenever key events in your life occur, such as civil partnership, marriage or divorce, or an expanding family, or even a new business venture. Without an up-to-date Will in place, the rules of intestacy would apply and you would have no choice in who the beneficiaries of your belongings would be. This can cause upset and unnecessary friction at an emotional time for your loved ones. A Lasting Power of Attorney can also help should you be at risk of becoming unable to make decisions for yourself and wish to appoint someone close to you to safe-guard your well being by making important decisions for you.

“As this is a limited cost-effective service Sussex Wills And Attorneys highly recommend you seek independent tax and accounting advice should you require it when considering your affairs.”

Colin Rimmer, a recent client of Nick and Adam’s, said: “As a gay man I would highly recommend Sussex Wills and Attorneys. All it took was a phone call, an email and a couple of witnesses. All done for a total fee of only £100. Very easy. Much clearer than my last one which Nick reviewed and revised. Go ahead people!”

Based in East Sussex, the Sussex Wills team offer a telephone/email based service to everyone in any location, and in addition can travel to your home or office if you are located in the Sussex area or sometimes even further afield such as in London. They can also help you set up a Lasting Power of Attorney relating to your property and financial affairs should you become incapable physically or mentally of making your own decisions.

New divorce negotiator service opens

A national firm has launched a new service covering Gloucestershire aimed at offering couples an alternative and amicable approach to divorce or separation without the need of two solicitors.

Divorce Negotiators

Divorce Negotiator is the brainchild of Carol Fennell, former Career Consultant and mother of one.

Carole SullivanCarol, said: “The benefits of amicable divorce in particular include a less stressful experience for the couple and their children and a process that is quicker and less expensive. Rather than employing two separate solicitors to negotiate on opposing sides in divorce cases we will support both parties through the divorce paperwork from initial Petition through to Decree Absolute.”

The Gloucestershire launch will bring the total number of Divorce Negotiator offices across the UK to 10 with a further 10 planned this year.

Carol added: “Gloucestershire couples will now be able to have joint face to face advice (in the comfort of their home if wished) to help them agree the details of their divorce and settlement as swiftly and amicably as possible meaning that they save time, money and stress.”

She concluded: “Our service will help couples reach a fair settlement without fighting out their divorce through two solicitors. We are also open 7 days a week from 9am to 9pm to offer a personal service to all our clients when they need us”.

Hove MP Weatherley backs Parliamentary motion on human trafficking

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has backed an Early Day Motion (EDM) against Human Trafficking to help raise awareness of issue.

Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove & Portslade
Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove & Portslade

Early Day Motion 54 draws attention to the problem of human trafficking in Britain and highlights the suffering of victims. Through this parliamentary motion, Mike has voiced his support for the need for legislation to assist in limiting or eliminating the root causes of this crime.

The motion also highlights the role of human trafficking in sustaining the criminal economy and recognises that many products sold to consumers are being produced using forced labour.

The cross-party EDM calls for better cooperation between EU member states and the appointment of liaisons to increase the effectiveness of international anti-human trafficking efforts.

Mike said: “Human trafficking is a silent menace whose very existence is totally unacceptable in the 21st century. That is why through support for this motion, and the Government’s work on this issue, we aim to send a message to the world that the United Kingdom supports human rights and will not tolerate modern day slavery.”

EDM 54 – Human Trafficking reads:

“That this House recognises that human trafficking represents a form of modern-day slavery and that many victims are held under conditions of enforced or bonded servitude whilst being exploited for their labour; urges the Government fully to implement the Council of Europe’s Convention on Human Trafficking, including appointing an independent rapporteur or ombudsperson and to work closely with other EU member states to adopt an effective regime to combat this appalling practice; notes that, as well as sustaining the criminal economy, human trafficking infiltrates the mainstream economy and the high street; further recognises that many innocent consumers buy products and use services that have been in some way produced or sustained by human trafficking or modern-day slavery; and calls on the Government to introduce a framework for UK companies to audit their supply chain in order to eradicate any trace of human trafficking or modern-day slavery from their goods and services.”
