Kemptown Carnival accounts reveals debts of £12,000

Kemp Town Carnival

Cllr Geoffrey Bowden, chaired the AGM of the Kemptown Carnival on Tuesday, October 29 at the Crypt Community Centre in the basement of St Georges Church. Approximately 12 people attended.

Accounts revealed debts of £12,000.

Total income for 2012-13 was £30,000 leaving a shortfall of £10,000 on the budget. This was due largely to a lack of sponsorship which was budgeted at £10,000 but only £500 was forthcoming.

Total expenses were £38,000 leaving a deficit of £8,000 on the 2013 event, which grew to £12,000 following debts from the 2012 event being rolled over.

Major creditor is the event manager who is owed £6,000.

Cllr Bowden a former Trustee of Brighton Pride and chair of the council’s Economic Development & Culture Committee declared this years Kemptown Carnival as a “fine example of a community event” after this years Carnival.

Bowden hit the headlines last week when in justifying the Green Administrations decision to remove the annual grant to Brighton Pride he suggested that Pride had a surplus and that the organisations finances were sustainable. It emerged that Cllr Bowden had not seen the Pride accounts and his statements were misleading. The organisers of Pride deny they have a surplus and insist that without the council grant of £25,000 they cannot fund the annual Pride Parade next year.

Kemptown MP continues fight against scam mail

Simon Kirby, MPSimon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, continues his fight against scam mail.

He will be placing a box in his Peacehaven office, which constituents can place any suspect mail that they receive.

Recently, he called on Brighton and Hove City Council to take action on this issue and follow in the footsteps of East Sussex Trading Standard’s ‘Scam Hub’.

Simon said:

“I understand the frustrations and worry that scam mail can cause people and I want to encourage constituents to drop any suspicious mail into my office.

“‘Scams’ are a serious issue and I want to ensure that the proper measures are taken to tackle, prevent fraud and persecute the people involved.”

Through Her Eyes

Through her eyes

Through Her Eyes, is a short film campaign started by a transgender woman from North Somerset.

The film is attracting a lot of attention for its unusual and innovate portrayal of trans* life, and aims to take the audience into the mind of a trans* women, showing them what it is like to see the world through her eyes.

We see, her face discrimination, abuse, and her own daemons in the same way many trans* women do, each and every day.

Production of the film is currently well underway. The public campaign is now live and picking up steam.

The Project aims to create a greater level of empathy and understanding between the general population, and the trans* community. Through this understanding, they hope that people will become more accepting and thoughtful when addressing trans* issues, or encountering a member of the trans* community.

This project is created by trans* people, to help improve the lives of members of the trans* community. It is people standing up for themselves, and saying we will actively try and make a change – In this case, to the way trans* people are portrayed through the media. What the film makers want is simple: A more honest portrayal of transgender individuals in film/TV, and more empathy and understanding towards the transgender community.

The public campaign for the project launched last week, and is quickly building momentum and has passed its minimum level of funding. In the process the project is receiving a growing volume of coverage within the LGBT community through social media and the web; people are rallying round this small but inspiring project.

Organisers are now looking to push on, and see just how far they can go. The more resources and support they receive, the better their chances are of really helping people and inspiring change.

Being filmed and produced in November and December they aim to premier the film in spring 2013, in a range of locations. It will also be hosted online, free to watch, and accompanied by a range of transgender information and resources.
