South West gay charity launches community survey

Intercom trust

The Intercom Trust, a charity providing LGBT community resources, has launched a survey of LGBT people in the south west.

The trust is inviting LGBT people to take part in The Big South West Community Survey, to express their thoughts about the world in which they live, including health services, community safety, social care and much more.

It hopes the survey results will establish what LGBT people’s experiences are of their local services and find out whether prejudice and exclusion are things of the past.

Dr Michael Halls, of the Intercom Trust, said:

“We’re aiming to make this the largest and most representative surveys ever of LGBT people in the south west.

“If we can reach 1,000 responses, that would be great! And why not? It’s secure, it’s confidential, it’s all about real people’s real lives — and there are prizes!”

Bishop of Chichester welcomes people to Pride

Bishop of Chichester at Pride

The Bishop of Chichester, Martin Warner spoke at the Service of Welcome for Pride at St John’s Church, Preston Park on Saturday, August 3 at 1pm.

Brighton Pride 2013 was a great day for everyone. Beautiful weather and a huge turnout.  The parade went off well and the Service of Welcome at which the Bishop of Chichester, Martin Warner, preached was well attended.

The Bishop spoke with passion about the inclusive nature of the Christian Gospel.

Below is a statement Bishop Martin put on the diocesan website about his attitude to Pride.

 The Bishop’s Message reads:

“I am delighted to take part in the Welcome Service in the Church of St John the Evangelist, Preston, for Brighton Pride, 2013.

“It is essential that the Christian voice is loud and clear in its welcome of Pride 2013.  This is a day for everyone.  It’s not simply gay Pride, but a celebration of everything that enriches the cultural, social, material and spiritual life of Brighton and Hove and the invaluable contribution that gay and lesbian people make to that enrichment in so many different ways.  We welcome the clear message from this community that human sexuality is a complex gifting and it demands that we honour the many varied aspects of human identity and the part they play in the life of human flourishing.

“Brighton is one of the great coastal cities of this land.  On his recent visit to another coastal city, Rio de Janeiro, Pope Francis said:

“We want a Church big enough to accommodate all humanity”.

“I hope and pray, as a bishop serving Christians from one end of Sussex to the other, that we, the Church, shall be seen to expand the open arms of Jesus Christ, and, as his disciples, to embrace with love and deeper understanding all who are represented by Pride 2013 in Brighton and Hove.”

Dr Keith Sharpe, Chair of Changing Attitude Sussex who organised the event, said:

“It was marvellous that the bishop agreed to be the preacher at the Service of Welcome.   He spoke with passion about the inclusive nature of the christian Gospel and of the particular value of LGBT people.  He is a senior Anglican cleric and his presence at the event and the content of his talk represent a very significant positive development in relations between the Church of England and the LGBT community.”

Respondents sought for online survey

University of BirminghamThe University of Birmingham are seeking respondents to complete a short online survey on division of household labour in same-sex cohabiting relationships.

The project, which is conducted by Charlotte Bendall (PhD candidate at the University of Birmingham) and supervised by Dr. Rosie Harding (Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham), explores how civil partnerships and same sex marriage can help to challenge society and the law’s ideas about gender roles in relationships.

It is particularly aimed at people who are currently in a same sex cohabiting relationship, but all participants are welcomed.

I Wanna Be Loved by You: Pink Fringe: Review

6dea3ac4571f11c4ee3cc9e510e8ed3f_0

The pink fringe continues to grow in substance, quality and style and this evening was an astonishing tour de force of talent all held together by one of the countries strongest, most challenging and most loveable performers, the utterly divine David Hoyle, who hosted this evenings collection of some of the best artistic currently gracing the UK’s stage.

I was moved, challenged, interested, thrilled, touched, delighted,  and even dare I say it a little bored, but then even the most interesting thrill pushed to its limits can cease to delight, but to be honest, I suspect this was because of the heat in the theatre and not the people on the stage.  The sweat was dripping of me, it was unbearably hot and this was a distraction from the excellent effort from the stage. However enough about my perspiration and more about the talent, which shone with brilliance and wit. Show info here:

Boogaloo Stu
Boogaloo Stu

Local stellar object Boogaloo Stu took us on an honest and delightful tour through his early years and was as charming, quirky and funny as always.  He warmed the audience up in the best way through serving up his very personal nostalgic refection on his formative music.

Stacy Makishi is a carefully crafted bit of chaos and oddness, seeming all off hand and stumbling but actually being a complete and thoughtfully planned performer with a sure aim, for the heart.   She was simply brilliant, shuffling and edging towards a moment it her set when it all made sense then carrying on it on into the surreal.  Her act was also one of sensual and musical bliss. The audience loved her.

dickie dorothy 1Dickie Beau  took us deep in the tortured and angry soul of Judy Garland but in one of the most beautifully disturbing ways I’ve ever witnessed. Part Mine, part puppet, part drag, part spirit medium his act is astonishingly powerful and touching. He really was astonishing and I for one am a HUGE new fan of his. See his website here and please, please go see him and be astonished.

Cameo Cookie from the Gary Clarek Dance  Company brought her new one woman show based on the life of arch homophobe and troubled lady Anita Bryant, her tightly plotted and intense movements transfixed the audience and delighted many. She was utterly devoted to the movement and held the audience in her focus.

Then we have HIM, the force of Nature that is David Hoyle himself, much has been written about Mr. Hoyle and I’m going to add more flattery and high praise. He simply is perfect, scary, inspiring, thrilling, angry and disturbing, and oh so so funny – his off the cuff comments being the best as usual and strange as fuck. We loved him, the audience loved him ( who wouldn’t dare) and he deserves to be gilded and licked by a thousand puppies. Please come back to Brighton more often Mr H.

A great night out, great festival well done Pink Fringe, it’s so good to go out and have such an astonishingly good value nights entertainment and it all be so wonderfully LGBT and excellent.

More please:

Hove MP Weatherley Backs Everyday Sexism Project

Mike Weatherley, MP
Mike Weatherley, MP

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has backed a unique initiative that highlights the sexism that many women face every day.

The Everyday Sexism Project exists to catalogue instances of sexism that are experienced by women as they go about their normal lives. The project vividly highlights that sexism exists in abundance in the UK and that it is very far from being a problem that we no longer need to discuss.

Mike said:

“The Everyday Sexism Project is a fantastic initiative that draws attention in a very eye-opening way to the kind of sexism that many women face on a day to day basis. The frank accounts of experiences of women from around the world underscores the need to take sexism seriously. Sadly you only need to read a few stories from women in Britain to see that sexism is very much alive and kicking in this country.”

Brighton gay business community supports LGBT people in Russia

Brighton Pride

Brighton’s gay and gay owned business rallied to highlight the plight of LGBT people in Russia at Brighton Pride on Saturday, August 3.

Brighton Sauna sponsored controversial poet and activist Vince Laws to stage his BANNED happening at Pride.

Before the start of the Parade, Vince painted peoples faces with the names of the 76 countries around the world were it is illegal to be gay, lesbian, bi sexual or transgender.

WEB.600.40

Kat Harding blessed the Pink Triangle to launch the BANNED happening and gave a passionate speech about equality and human rights. Singers from the Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus all dressed identically as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz sang “Your Disco Needs You.”

100 banners were distributed for people to carry on the Pride Parade with the message that LGBT people in Brighton were thinking and supporting LGBT people in Russia through their difficult times since Putin imposed his new anti-gay laws. The banners were designed by Brighton University students Kate Wildblood and Karol Michalec and the campaign inspired by a film made by James Brooks.

Thirty of the 65 floats on the parade agreed to carry a banner  supporting all LGBT people in Russia including all local political parties and the Council’s LGBT Workers Forum. However the lesbian Green councillor for Queens Park, Cllr Stephanie Powell declined to carry a banner saying: “they would carry their own banner”.

Other councillors on the Green walking tableau agreed to support the initiative and the Greens carried two banners supporting LGBT people in Russia.

Green Party

Sadly some corporates and statutory organisations refused to support the initiative saying it was too political.

James Ledward, editor of Gscene Magazine, said:

“This  is not a political issue it is a human rights issue. If they did not recognise that they should question why they were on the parade at all.”

“Disappointingly a few LGBT organisations and social groups also declined to display the banners. I was appalled by their reluctance. They are not so shy when they come to the community to fundraise for them. This was their opportunity  to show that Pride is about the needs of all LGBT  people and not just those in Brighton where many of us are very fine thank you very much indeed.”

The Brighton Sauna on Grand Parade sponsored Vince Laws BANNED happening.
