June edition of Pink Humanist now available online

Pink Humanist JuneHigh levels of intolerance towards LGBT people in Europe and Africa are shown in two separate surveys released last month (May).

Details of the findings are contained in the June issue of The Pink Humanist, the quarterly online magazine, published by the UK gay charity, the Pink Triangle Trust, on the Pink Humanist blog.

The latest issue examines the Boy Scouts of America’s recent illogical decision to allow gay youngsters, but not adults, to be active members of the organisation; and it carries a piece about an incidence of homophobia on the Isle of Man that badly backfired on a fundamentalist Christian pastor.

However, there’s good news from Moldova, where gay rights activists last month applauded the fact that young people are becoming far more tolerant towards the LGBT community there.

The momentous vote in the UK Parliament to approve same-sex marriage prompted human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell to provide a report about the oft-times acrimonious debate, one that he claims unleashed waves of homophobia not seen in Britain for many years.

The magazine also carries a timely article about the efforts of Nigerian human rights campaigner Leo Igwe to boost levels of humanism, atheism and scepticism in his country.

Given its shocking decision this week to pass anti-gay legislation – a move driven largely by religious zealots – there has never been a more important time to counter attack the forces of irrationalism that currently has Nigeria in its grip.

Hove MP says thank you

King Alfred Public Meeting

Following the success of last months King Alfred public meeting, Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has thanked residents for sending him their views on the future of the King Alfred Leisure Centre and has announced announce that a video of the meeting is now available online.

Mike says he has received hundreds of suggestions with regard to the King Alfred. He is currently preparing a submission to submit to Brighton & Hove City Council with a summary of the meeting and to highlight the views of residents.

Mike said:

“It was encouraging that so many people took the trouble to get in touch and share their views on what a new leisure centre should focus upon. Thank you to everyone who contacted me. I am now pleased to announce that to all those who couldn’t make the meeting, it is now available to watch online. A link is available on my website.”

Rail Bosses rewarded for missing targets

Chief Executive of Network Rail, Sir David Higgins, will receive a bonus of almost £100,000, despite the organisation’s failure to meet some of its performance targets. Other senior figures are also set to receive bonuses of up to £67,000.

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehave is not happy with the payments and has written to the Transport Minister Norman Baker MP in order to express his concerns over the bumper bonuses being awarded to Network Rail bosses.

Simon recently set up the Better Trains 4 Brighton campaign, in response to frequent complaints from his constituents over the poor rail services in the area.

He said:

“Since becoming MP for Brighton Kemptown I have been in frequent correspondence with Network Rail to make them aware of the serious concerns people in the city have over the standard of rail services they have to put up with. It is clear to me that Network Rail must accept some of the responsibility for these shortcomings, which is why these bonuses seem so remarkable. They are awarded on top of very substantial salaries, and many people in Brighton will be questioning whether an additional £100,000 in performance related pay is justified, given the size of the problem that persists.

“I believe that the Government has a responsibility to hold the organisation to account on this issue, and I have written to the Rail Minister Norman Baker, to see that he does just that. I am also seeking a meeting with Network Rail representatives at the earliest possible convenience, and I will look to raise this issue with them directly.”

Dave Lynn stars in Brighton revival of DIAMOND – opens tonight

Dave Lynn as Diamond Lil
Dave Lynn as Diamond Lil

In June, local entertainer Dave Lynn revives the role he created at the Kings Head Theatre in London in 2006 when he played Diamond Lil in the musical drama DIAMOND. The show played to rave reviews at the time with Dave’s performance of Diamond Lil coming in for special praise from the critics.

DIAMOND is the true story of Harry Young who, at the tender age of 14, decided to dress solely as a woman. He wandered the streets of Bethnal Green in heels, frock and makeup becoming one of the East Ends most memorable and much loved characters, the heartbeat of the local community!

The show is set during World War II around the East End and tells us the story of Lil, her tempestuous relationship with partner Maisie, and the colourful characters in her community that gravitated to and socialized at The Royal Oak Pub on Columbia Road.

Dave is joined in this production by an impressive cast which includes Stephen Richards (aka Lola Lasagna) who, since his knock out performance in Boys In the Band at the Theatre Royal last year, throws off his drag attire for the second time in his career, to perform ‘straight’ as Lil’s brother Bill.

Written by Linda Wilkinson, DIAMOND is inspired by her book Watercress But No Sandwiches – 300 years of the Columbia Road Area which tells the moving stories of old Eastenders, whose memories through their families go back almost 200 years.

The book won the prestigious Raymond Williams prize and has already been a BBC Radio 4 play; before being performed as a play with music at the Kings Head Theatre, Islington, London where it garnered four stars from threatre critic Nicholas de Jongh.

For this revival the the script has been rewritten and extra music numbers composed by Robert Orledge.
