Phwoarrrr!!

When Clare Short MP called the media out for the casual and consistently sexist messages it was broadcasting, she got caned not only in the media, but in Parliament itself.

This month the Short baton is being picked up by a coalition of women’s groups in Brighton & Hove who are ‘worrying their pretty little heads’ again about the issue of how women are portrayed in the media.

Spot the Sexism Month started yesterday, June 1,  with people being invited to keep an eye out for any words or images that demean women in direct or indirect ways.

When found, you’re asked to take a snap and either upload it to: view: www.spotthesexismbrighton.co.uk or post it to social media using the hashtag #sexistpress.

Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, Caroline Lucas will be presenting a report based on the findings of the project to the Government’s Equalities and Media Minister, Maria Miller, MP  in July.

Caroline said:

“Whether it’s the Sun’s embarrassingly regressive Page 3, the Daily Mail representing women as merely the sum of their ‘curves’ or ‘pins’, or rape cases being reported next to pictures of half-naked women.”

“The media constantly sends out damaging messages about women and girls.”

“By taking a sample month’s sexist media and advertising examples and presenting them to the Minister, we will urge her to take action to restrict objectifying images and challenge reporting which trivialises violence against women and girls, as well as asking the Culture, Media and Sport Committee to carry out a full inquiry into sexism across the media.”

UKIP leader to speak at Hove Town Hall tonight, June 3

Nigel Farage, MEP
Nigel Farage, MEP

Nigel Farage, the controversial leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), will be speaking at Hove Town Hall on Monday, June 3 at 7pm. The venue has a capacity of 860 and organisers say seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Doors will be locked once the venues capacity has been reached.

UKIP have been outspoken opponents of Equal Marriage and have become the natural home for disenchanted right wing Tories.

UKIPS views on homophobia as researched by BUAF include:

In December 2012 The Guardian reported Farage’s links with anti-gay, far-right European politicians amid claims he backed a populist Polish priest who describes homosexual men as “sodomites”.  More recently, The Pink News reported Farage as saying he would not expel UKIP members for voicing “old-fashioned” views about homosexuality, including those who describe it as “disgusting”.

UKIPS views on xenophobia and racism as researched by BUAF include:

According the Daily Mirror (May 18) Ukip’s leader on Lincolnshire Council and East Midlands Chair, wrote: “Have you noticed that if you rearrange the letters in ‘illegal immigrants’, and add just a few more letters, it spells, ‘Go home you free-loading, benefit-grabbing, resource-sucking, baby-making, non-English-speaking ********* and take those other hairy-faced, sandal-wearing, bomb-making, camel-riding, goat-********, raghead ******** with you.’ He also objected to foreign doctors working in the NHS writing: “We don’t want them taking all the jobs in the local community and we certainly don’t want them working in our  hospitals!”  The Mirror story also reported UKIP’s party Chair in Bury writing of Barack Obama: “I bet he’s a closet ‘Imam’ as well!  ”If I ever see him on a Greyhound bus wearing a rucksack, I’m getting off!!”  During the council elections last month a Ukip candidate in East Sussex was suspended after reportedly posting anti-Semitic comments on a conspiracy theory website including a claim that the second world war was “engineered by the Zionist” (The Guardian 26th April). A UKIP candidate in Kent, referred to risk of tuberculosis after barriers to Bulgarian and Romanian immigrants are lifted next year on his blog “I would suggest not going to London after January 2014 unless you absolutely have to and if you do, adopt the Japanese practice of wearing a face mask,” (Daily Telegraph 26th April) and there are reports of BNP and EDL members joining UKIP. The chair of the Hillingdon UKIP branch boasted on his blog that he “joined my friends from March for England to tag along on the EDL Tower Hamlets demonstration”.

Local groups including:

Brighton, Hove & District Trades Union Council, Sussex Labour Representation Committee, PCS South East Region, PCS DWP East Sussex Branch, Brighton University UCU, Brighton Defend the NHS, Brighton Queers Against the Cuts, Brighton Love Music Hate Racism, Varndean College Against the Cuts, Brighton & Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Brighton International Socialism Network, Brighton Socialist Resistance, Brighton SWP, Brighton UAF, West Sussex Coast UAF……..are planning a protest outside Hove Town Hall from 6pm

Labour choose candidate for crucial by-election

Emma Daniel
Emma Daniel

Labour have chosen Emma Daniel as their candidate in the Hanover and Elm Grove by-election in July.  The ward originally Labour became a stronghold for the Greens during the last 12 years. The result will give an early indication as to the extent of damage caused by the failed coup by the Greens to dispose of their Convenor, Jason Kitcat last month.

Emma, 36, said:

“I am very pleased to be selected and I look forward to talking to local people about the positive policies and new ideas Labour has for Hanover and Elm Grove, as well as the city as a whole.”

Leader of the Labour and Co-operative Group Cllr Warren Morgan, said:

“I’m delighted local members have chosen Emma, she will be an outstanding candidate and a fantastic councillor for Hanover and Elm Grove. So many voters are telling us they voted Green last time but are disappointed and will be returning to Labour in this election.”

Emma has over fifteen years experience in the voluntary sector, working in housing and homelessness policy. As a senior member of the city’s Community and Voluntary Sector Forum (CVSA), Emma supported elected representatives in their work in partnership with the statutory sector.

Emma also served as a member on the Sussex Police Authority, and founded the Coats for Kids project which collected and distributed winter coats to families who could not afford them last winter. Emma currently works in the city’s digital sector.

Passionate about equalities, Emma combines her work and political activism with family life, often bringing her step son and little girl, who goes to school in Hanover and Elm Grove, out campaigning on the doorstep.

The by-election has been caused by the resignation of  Cllr Matt Follett, one of the three Green councillors for the ward and comes at a time when the Greens are currently bitterly divided and openly criticising each other, while at the same time rubbish remains uncollected in city streets.

The result is expected  to be close with some predicting defeat for the ruling Greens. It would be the first time Labour have ever regained a seat from the Greens in the city, and would mark a sea-change in Brighton and Hove community politics. A lively campaign is expected by all.

Polling takes place on July 11.

UK Gay Humanists shocked at Nigeria’s impending draconian anti-gay legislation

Nigeria’s parliament has adopted the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill, a law with a penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment for gay, lesbian and bisexual (LGB) people who marry or display affection.

Initially tabled in 2011, the bill adopted outlaws same-sex marriage in Nigeria, and punishes with fourteen years of prison anyone who marries, or is married to, a person of the same sex. No exceptions are foreseen for foreign tourists, workers including aid workers, or diplomats.

The law will also punish with ten years’ imprisonment any public display of affection between two people of the same sex, or any involvement in running a gay bar or an NGO defending the human rights of LGBT people.

The UK gay Humanist charity the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT) has expressed shock at the news.

George BroadheadCommenting on this development the PTT’s secretary, George Broadhead, said:

“This is shocking news. Gays, lesbians and bisexuals already face open discrimination and abuse in a country divided by Christians and Muslims who almost uniformly oppose homosexuality. In Nigeria’s north, where Islamic Sharia law has been enforced for about a decade, LGB people can face death by stoning.

“It seems that there is a very real threat that this draconian bill will become law and, if it does, Nigeria will become the most homophobic nation in Africa. Even in South Africa, the one country where gays can marry, lesbians have been brutally attacked and murdered.

“If the bill is enacted, the situation for LGB people in Nigeria will become completely untenable, setting a precedent that would threaten all Nigerians’ rights to privacy, equality, free expression and free association.

“It is clear that the impetus for such legislation has come from religious sources. The Nigerian Humanist Movement (NHM), which has had financial support from the PTT, has been one of the few organisations defending LGB rights in the country. Its former executive director, Leo Igwe, deserves much credit for courageously speaking up for these rights in the country’s parliament.”

Brighton writers contribute to LGBTQ Doctor Who book

Queens Dig Time LordsLong time friends and Brighton residents Neil Chester and Martin Warren have contributed to ‘Queers Dig Time Lords’ an anthology of new essays on Doctor Who from an LGBTQ perspective.

Published this month by Mad Norwegian Press the book is a sister edition to the previous collection ‘Chicks Dig Time Lords’ which looked at the programme from a feminist perspective.

Neil who lives in the Preston Park area said:

“I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who since I was a child, when the editors asked if I might like to contribute to this book I jumped at the chance. What started as a mild curiosity in a junk yard has lead to years of fun and loads of friends.”

Neil contacted his friend when editors asked if he knew of anyone else who might like to contribute.

Martin said:

“Doctor Who was what cemented our friendship and I’m very grateful to the programme for that. The opportunity to offer an LGBTQ slant on an iconic institution was great and it’s a really enjoyable collection of essays with some eye opening takes on the Doctor and the programme”.

Local author, playwright and producer Nigel Fairs has also contributed a touching piece about his friendship with one of the shows stars, Louise Jameson. Louise played Leela, Tom Bakers ‘savage’ assistant in the original series and the essay looks at Nigels’ relationship with Louise as it develops over time.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who with special programmes broadcast in November.

Queers Dig Time Lords is available now at Amazon and major book retailers.

Purple cow goes ‘Wonderground’

London wonderland

If you’re missing the whole festival vibe and especially the wonderfully draughty Speigeltent, you don’t have far to go to catch both by the tail, as the tent has pitched up, Tardis-like, 60 miles away on the lawns of the South Bank for the rest of the summer and now goes by the name of London Wonderground.

Throughout the month of June there’s a whole range of cabaret, circus and sideshow on offer just a 20 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride from Victoria.

Godfathers of alternative cabaret, The Tiger Lillies, who wowed at the Festival last month, are doing their only London gigs at Wonderground from, June 7-9, while Circa, who soared around Hove’s All Saints Church with How Like An Angel, return to their circus roots with new show Beyond for a 14 night run dotted through the month.

Ex-music hall star (‘I ‘ad a little thrush but now it’s gawn’) Ida Barr brings her Eyes Down Bingo show to the party on June 8 and 29, while throughout the month you can thrill to Limbo, a performance that includes ‘heart-stopping illusions, mind-bending manoeuvres and breathtaking dance moves.’

Next door is the upside-down purple cow, the Udderbelly, which is playing host to the best of the comedy world until they all move on to Edinburgh in August.

Highlights include the very camp but unfortunately straight Hal Cruttenden performing Tough Luvvie on the 6th, and Gallic sex-symbol and all-round French tit Marcel Lucont on the 4th.

There’s also Irish hip hop comedy improv team Abandoman on the 7th and Tommy-Two-Ways ex-Tory MP Gyles Brandreth on the 15th who’s Looking for Happiness (not in the Tory party my dear!)

Be part of Scotland’s equal marriage video

Equality Network

The Equality Network, a national charity working for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality and human rights in Scotland are inviting supporters to get involved in the filming of Scotland’s equal marriage video.

The final scene for the video will be filmed outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on Wednesday, June 5 at noon and equal marriage supporters from across Scotland are being invited to attend and take part in a crowd shot.

The video will be launched later this year as part of the final stage of the Equality Network’s campaign. The LGBT equality charity hopes the video will help build momentum and support in the run up to a vote on Scotland’s equal marriage bill.

Tom French
Tom French

Tom French, Policy Coordinator for the Equality Network, said:

“Over the past six years Scotland’s equal marriage campaign has involved many thousands of people from across the country. As we move into the final stage of our campaign it is vital that we continue to show MSPs the strength of support that exists for LGBT equality in Scotland. We want a large majority in the Scottish Parliament to send a message out to future generations of LGBT people that they are full and equal members of our society. That’s why we hope a large crowd of supporters will join us on Wednesday to show our politicians and the world that Scotland supports equal marriage.”

Supporters are welcome to turn up on the day, but the Equality Network is encouraging people to register their attendance in advance to help with planning:

The Scottish Government announced earlier this week that the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill is still on track to be introduced by the end of June.

A consultation on the draft bill closed at the end of March, and the Equality Network has been pushing the Scottish Government to make the final bill as progressive as possible.

Key concerns include ensuring the legislation fully addresses the needs of trans and intersex people, ensuring all supportive religious and humanist bodies are given the right to conduct same-sex marriages, and securing mixed-sex civil partnership, which has always been a key part of the Equal Marriage campaign in Scotland.

To date over two thirds of MSPs have signed the Equality Network’s Equal Marriage Pledge, committing themselves to voting for same-sex marriage and mixed-sex civil partnership.

Degrees of creativity

Student degrees exib

The arts graduates of the University of Sussex are showing their degree work at the Uni’s Grand Parade building at the moment, and it’s well worth a look.

On show are textiles, 3-D design, fine and graphic art, architecture, film, photography and sculpture, and it’s a brilliant opportunity to seek out, purchase or commission work from future leading lights in the arts world, or to just browse and see how fecund the department that counts Julien Macdonald and Rachel Whiteread as alumni is.

I was particularly taken with Hannah Rose Whittle’s squishy and tactile ceramics, based on the Japanese concept of ‘mujo’ (impermanence), and Finola Maynard’s beautiful powder blue pots inspired by industrial bobbins.

Also noteworthy is Joshua Barnes interactive sundial bench which lets you record a story while sitting on it and which will then only play that particular story back to the person who sits on it at exactly the same time a year hence.

Isobel Goodacre’s work plays with boundaries using paper and acrylic, mapping all sorts of odd things including social interactions, while Louise Pettersson’s leather bags and pouches have the feel of the stone age about them.

The exhibition continues at both Grand Parade Faculty of Arts Building, University of Brighton, 58-67 Grand Parade, Brighton BN2 OJY and History of Art and Design Building, University of Brighton, 10-11 Pavilion Parade, Brighton BN2 1RA until June 12.

Opening times are Monday-Wednesday 10am-6pm, Thursday and Friday 10am-8pm, and Saturday and Sunday noon-5pm.
