Theatre: Tiger Lillies’ Rime of the Ancient Mariner: Brighton Dome

tigerlills

Twisted cabaret trio the Tiger Lillies conjured up a dark, and occasionally twisted, musical retelling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of The Ancient Mariner, the existential story of a damned sailor drifting across the ocean after shooting an albatross.

The three-piece band, known for merging the macabre magic of pre-war Berlin with the savage edge of punk, veered from ebullient accordion-based sea shanties, to resonant ethereal piano ballads; the raucous Cabin Boy was bloody and good, while the spectral Land of Ice saw icy mountains cascade onto the stage, enticed by Mike Pickering‘s drums, which shimmered like moon-lit stalactites.

While an acquired taste, frontman Martyn Jacques‘ eerie vocals, were a perfect match for Coleridge’s epic tale, swooping into a cracked crystal falsetto, before digging up the dirt with guttural grunts. The beautifully ironic Water Water, a song utilising possibly the most famous line from the poem (“Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink”), was desolate and peppered with sheer hopelessnesses: don’t drink the water or you’ll go mad, if you aren’t already!

Mark Holthusen‘s hypnotic multimedia projections harked back to children’s-theatre; an albatross deftly flying into the audience moved mechanically as if operated by strings, the waves were cardboard cutouts. Instead of over-powering the narrative, they seamlessly weaved together songs of rolling waves and reverie.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner is an utterly enchanting, boozy affair, evoking lost marbles in mid-ocean with more in common with Glyndebourne than Glastonbury.

Ireland’s first Mardi Gras Festival in Waterford

Waterford Pride 2012
Waterford Pride 2012

Waterford Pride, one of Ireland’s biggest LGBT pride festivals, is shedding its labels to become an event focused on diversity and inclusion.

Ireland’s first Mardi Gras festival, based on the event in New Orelans, will take place from May 27 to June 2 with a full line-up of events throughout the week.

The pride festival in the city traces its roots back to the early 2000s when a team of volunteers put together the first festival. The event has grown over the years and today Waterford City is one where lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people are a welcome part of the wider community. It is this openness which prompted the team behind the event to create something that everyone, straight or gay, can enjoy together.

The line-up of events throughout the week ranges includes:

• A ghost walk through the historic Viking Triangle to The Mardi Gras Ball where X-Factor star Kitty Brucknell will perform.

• The Mardi Gras parade will take place on Saturday, June 1 at 3pm leaving from The Plaza and will be followed by a street party in Railway Square.

• Steps star Faye Tozer will entertain the crowds that evening in Dignity.

Waterford Pride Chairman Shane McCrann, said:

“This is a chance for us to create an event the entire South East region can celebrate and we invite everyone, gay or straight, to come and enjoy the week-long festival. We’re delighted to have Faye Tozer from Steps as our headline act and feel the events line-up has something for everyone. We’ve incorporated some of the New Orleans Mardi Gras themes and traditions and we hope everyone who visits experiences a little piece of that magic.”

Cllr Matt Fowllett

A by-election will be announced in due course.

Matt said:

“I will be stepping down from Brighton & Hove City Council on 24th May as I am to moving to live with my family in another part of the country. I do not consider it ethical nor logistically possible to live outside the council boundary and adequately serve city residents. I am sad to be leaving and wish the council leadership every success in their endeavours for Brighton and Hove. The Green Party is fortunate to have such a diligent group leader in Jason Kitcat. I’d also like to thank my Hanover councillor colleagues Bill Randall and Liz Wakefield for their team-working approach over the last two years.”

Rob Shepherd, Chair of Brighton & Hove Green Party, added:

“Matt’s decision to stand down today was made several days ago and his resignation letter was written before any events associated with yesterday’s council leadership confirmation came to light. There is no relationship between Matt’s resignation and the recently publicised Twitter conversation between a Green councillor and a Labour councillor.”

“The Brighton & Hove Green Party is now selecting its candidate, whose name will be published in the near future.

“I would like to thank Matt for all his work as a councillor on behalf of the party and on behalf of residents in Hanover & Elm Grove, and I wish him well for the future.”
