Tatchell to attend Proud2Be Totnes Pride 2013

Peter Thatchell

Peter Tatchell, the LGBT human rights campaigner, is scheduled to Chair a live panel debate at the first Proud2Be Totnes Pride at Totnes Civic Hall, Devon on Saturday, September 14 from 11.30am-4.30pm.

The event will include live music, food & drinks, workshops, exhibitions and stalls for local organisations.

Peter said:

“I am proud to support Proud2Be Totnes Pride 2013. I’ll be there and I hope you will join me for a fabulous celebration. The LGBT community makes an important, positive contribution to Totnes and Devon.

“There have long been LGBT Pride events in big cities like London and Bristol. But it is really important that Pride celebrations also happen in smaller town and cities too. LGBT people are often invisible in more rural parts of the country. Their input into local communities is frequently overlooked. Proud2Be Totnes Pride is the recognition that LGBT people are part of south Devon. We’re here, we’re queer and we love Totnes.

“It is important to keep campaigning for LGBT acceptance and human rights in Devon and all across the UK.”

Proud2Be Totnes Pride is the brainchild of gay identical brothers Mat and Jon Price, who together founded and run the Proud2Be Project, a social organisation that is dedicated to encouraging and supporting all LGBT people to be proud of who they are.

Natural Burials in Woodingdean

Cllr Leo Littman
Cllr Leo Littman

Brighton & Hove City Council’s Bereavement Services team has created a new natural burial cemetery located near the Lawn Memorial Cemetery on Warren Road, Woodingdean.

Created in response to demand for a natural burial option, the new two-acre Woodland Valley cemetery overlooks the South Downs, and has been chosen for its natural beauty with carefully selected plants suitable for the existing environment.

There will be approximately 1,800 burial plots available and while each grave will be marked only with an unobtrusive ground level metal plaque, small wooden memorials and wildflowers will also be available to personalise graves.

Green Councillor Leo Littman, responsible for Life Events for Brighton & Hove City Council, said:

“The plans for Woodland Valley are sensitive to the changing needs of people in the city and to the environment.

“The location offers a tranquil place to be calm and remember loved ones. The area is already an attractive location and will grow even more beautiful over time as the woodland grows to maturity.

“It is an honour to be involved in helping to improve choice for people in need of bereavement services.”

Prices start at £1,250 for a single plot. Only bio-degradable coffins are permitted. The area will be open during existing daytime cemetery hours.

The Albert Kennedy Trust and Outpost Housing to merge

Albert Kennedy TrustOutpost Housing and the Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT), both LGBT youth homeless charities, have merged to meet rising demand and sustain vital services for young people.

The merger sees the charities rebranded as AKT Outpost. Outpost will continue its vital services in the north east of England, which include offering support and accommodation to LGBT young people at risk of homelessness, while AKT will continue to offer its range of services for LGBT young people in the north west of England and London.

Tim Sigsworth, AKT Chief Executive, said:

“AKT and Outpost have a lot in common and by coming together we hope to continue and enhance the level of help and support that LGBT young people at risk of homelessness receive across the north east, north west and in London.

“Nationally we are now seeing an increase in demand for our services of around 30% and by sharing our knowledge, expertise and some of our running costs with Outpost we can ensure every penny possible goes directly to support the growing numbers of young people who need our help.”

Jim McElderry, Chair of Outpost Housing, continued:

“Outpost has received tremendous support in recent years from local funders such as Newcastle City Council and the Northern Rock Foundation, but we know if we are going to be able to protect and develop housing support services for LGBT young people in the North East we need to do more.

“This merger opens up new funding opportunities for us and means we can now be part of a national campaign for LGBT young people without losing our local identity.”

Clinical researcher needs your help!

WEB.600Louise Kerr a nurse and Masters student of Southampton University, needs your help with conducting research to explore the health and social care concerns of older HIV positive and HIV negative men.

The research, which forms part of Louise’s dissertation, comes at a time when people with HIV are living longer, thus increasing the number of older HIV positive gay men requiring care in the UK.

Louise said:

“I am a nurse who has worked in HIV and sexual health services, both in London and in Brighton, for more than 20 years and I have a particular interest in HIV and ageing.

“This study wants to discover what older HIV-positive gay men believe they will need from health and care services as they grow older. It also wants to see if the needs of older HIV-positive gay men are different to those of older HIV-negative gay men.

“It is hoped the knowledge gained from this research study will help to ensure that future service development has been informed by the views of older gay men.

“If you are a gay man aged over 65 and you would like the opportunity to think and talk about your health and care concerns, I would love to hear from you.  I would especially like to hear from some older HIV-negative gay men, as their experiences and views may be quite different”
