Pussy Pampering in West Sussex

Debbie Carrington
Debbie Carrington

The Longcroft Luxury Cat hotel, a five star retreat offering to pamper your pussy, will open its doors in Lindfield, West Sussex on Saturday, May 11.

The hotel intends to treat your pussy like a queen with a specially prepared ‘A La Cat’ menu served on bone china, to soothing mood music, followed by personal grooming sessions ensuring your feline friend will never want to leave.

Every detail has been meticulously planned with hygiene, safety and, above all, luxury in mind. The hotel has been custom-built to provide seven very spacious individually decorated suites with wrought iron designer beds and plump cushions.

The Longcroft Luxury Cat hotel, is run by Debbie Carrington and her husband from her garden at Scaynes Hill Road,  Lindfield, which is a 25 minute drive from the centre of Brighton and Gatwick Airport.

Debbie said:

“Leaving a much loved cat for whatever reason, because of a holiday or having renovation work done at home can be really distressing. We can put an owner’s mind at rest that their pet is being well looked after, pampered and loved while they are away.

“Growing up with cats has always been a big part of our lives. We can’t wait to get to know our guests and to spend time with them, finding out their likes and dislikes. We had never left our own cats in a cattery before Longcroft and are really looking forward to offering such a personal service for cat lovers in and around West Sussex.”

The hotel will be officially opened on Saturday, May 11 by the Mayor of Haywards Health, Cllr John Sabin at 2pm. Cat owners are invited to go along and join in the celebrations and look around the hotel. A raffle will be held in aid of the local branch of Cats’ Protection.

For 2013, Longcroft will be offering a VIP scheme, which entitles cat owners to 20% off all standard rate bookings for 7+ days in 2013, plus ‘late space’ booking priority and ‘A La Cat’ menu upgrades for one year.

Anyone wishing to attend the opening event should email: rsvp@longcroftcathotel.co.uk quoting their cat or cats’ names and their preferred stay dates.

Hove MP calls for Baroness Thatcher tribute

Mike Weatherley, MP
Mike Weatherley, MP

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has backed a Parliamentary Motion which calls for a tribute to be made to the late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher by renaming one of Britain’s international airports.

Early Day Motion (EDM) 1262 – Baroness Thatcher Tribute – was proposed in order to recognise the international impact of Margaret Thatcher. A number of airports around the UK have already been renamed after famous individuals, including the George Best Belfast City Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Mike said:

“The precedent to name airports after significant figures has already been set, so I am right behind renaming a major airport after Thatcher. Personally I would like to see Gatwick Airport, which was named after an old manor and literally means ‘goat farm’, changed to the far more enticing Thatcher International Airport.”

Margaret ThatcherEDM 1262 – Baroness Thatcher Tribute reads:

“That this House notes the sad news that Baroness Thatcher died following a stroke; recognises that she changed not only the face of politics but the face of a nation, through her dedication, commitment, energy and determination, that she secured a successful future for this country that many at the time thought unthinkable and that her enduring legacy will be to leave a nation in a better state than she found it; and calls on the Government to commemorate Baroness Thatcher’s colossal achievements by renaming one of the UK’s international airports, Thatcher International Airport as an enduring testament to her contribution to the world.”

Get ballsy!

The inaugural Brighton Big Balls fun endurance race takes place on the beaches of Brighton & Hove at 9am on Sunday, May 12, 2013 to raise awareness of testicular, penile and prostate cancers.  All sponsorship raised by the race will go towards research into these potentially devastating diseases.

Brighton Big Balls is an easy 3 kilometre course along Brighton and Hove’s pebble beach and over the stone groynes from the Meeting House Café by Hove Lawns to Hove Lagoon. To make it that bit harder, spunky competitors will carry two large red 14 inch bouncing balls made out of light-weight rubber.

Race organisers were delighted when among the first to sign up for the race was local celebrity, Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim, followed by local radio Juice FM presenters Jonno and Guy Lloyd.  Players from Brighton & Hove Albion have also pledged their support as has Sussex County Cricket club, the Sussex Sharks.

There is a competitive nature to this worthy event; numbers on the competitors’ balls match their race number and to finish the event competitors must have both their own balls in hand.  Imagine up to 800 balls spread over the beach and 400 runners each searching for their particular balls. And this is before they’ve even begun!

There will also be a few below-the-belt surprises; Ninja-beach is the base for a crack team armed with long poles and boxing gloves mounted on the end to knock competitors’ balls from their firm grasp. There is also an oil hand dip to encourage slippery balls.

Gerard Maye Legal will host a water-balloon alley Big-Balloon-Blitz for competitors to run through where members of the public can donate in return for a water-balloons to throw for charity.

You can expect a lot of laughs from a race with a serious issue at its heart.

Women can show their support by running alongside the proud men-folk and displaying their very own Big Balls in a lady-like manner. There is even a special prize for the woman with the best moustache (real ones will not be counted). There are up to 400 spaces available in total and anyone over the age of 14 can take part.

Entry fee is £25

The race winner receives an impressive golden balls trophy and everyone taking part will receive some balls on a ribbon – otherwise known as a medal!

Brighton Big Balls is proudly sponsored by The Montefiore Hospital, Brighton Racecourse, Gerard Maye Legal Ltd, body conditioning experts Bodi-fit and Chas Berger

Brighton Station Gateway Project to get go ahead

City councillors will be recommended to give the go ahead to a package of measures to improve the area around Brighton Station at a meeting next week (April 30).

Members of the council’s Transport Committee will be recommended to approve detailed design work to get underway on the £1.5 million project to improve the area around the city’s busiest transport hub.

Work is expected to start later this year on the project, known as the Brighton Station Gateway, subject to this approval.

The aim is to improve the area for everyone approaching and departing from the station including pedestrians, cyclists, bus and taxi passengers, along with local residents and businesses.

The package of measures for the area around the southern station entrance includes:

• A simplified road layout to improve safety, enhance traffic flow and improve pedestrian crossings
• Wider pavements to provide better facilities for pedestrians, and businesses and residents in Queens Road and Surrey Street
• An improved bus area in front of the station
• A contraflow cycle lane in Queen’s Road to improve access for cyclists
• A taxi drop off point with improved facilities for accessible cabs
• Improved loading facilities for local businesses

The proposals form part of a wider programme of  investment in the station area. Complementary work includes Southern Railway’s £4.5m investment in improvements within the station; and local developments including the work on the final stages of New England Quarter, and the redevelopment of the former casino in Queen’s Road.

Next week’s Transport Committee decision will follow three years of development work on the Station Gateway project during which the council worked closely with transport companies, residents, visitors and businesses.

Cllr Ian Davey
Cllr Ian Davey

Councillor Ian Davey, chair of the council’s Transport Committee, said:

“Brighton station is one of the country’s busiest stations and this project is designed to bring about really great improvements and provide a much better welcome to people arriving in the city. As well as benefiting residents and visitors using the station, it will also enhance the environment for the many people who live and work in this area.

“This is a major project for the city; we have consulted widely and we are grateful to everyone who has given their views and worked with us in developing and shaping the scheme.”

While most aspects of the proposals have gained public support, residents and businesses in the North Laine raised concerns about the suggested relocation of the station’s taxi rank to Frederick Place. As a result the committee will be recommended to agree that the improvements should go ahead with the rank remaining in its current location in front of the station, with Southern Railway working with the council to ensure the rank is well managed.

Cllr Davey added:

“It is important we get the scheme right for local residents living in the vicinity of the station as well as for the city as a whole. We’ve listened to people’s views about relocating the taxi rank and carried out further traffic studies and, because of concerns about the impact on the North Laine, the recommendation is that the rank should stay in its current location.”

The council is also working closely with Southern Railway to deliver a cycle parking hub to the north of the station and a new pedestrian entrance to the North Laine.

Dogs to jog with!

Alasaka

A pair of energetic young huskies are looking for a new home with owners who love to exercise!  Alaska and Dakota are currently being cared for by Brighton & Hove City Council Animal Welfare team after their owner became too ill to look after them.

The pair, who are devoted to each other so must be re-homed together, are affectionate and well behaved family pets but need plenty of exercise.

Animal welfare officer Stephanie Williams, said:

“It’s really important that potential new owners realise how much exercise these dogs need. They would make perfect pets for keen runners looking for a canine companion to jog with.”

Alaska is a pure bred blue eyed husky, while Dakota is a cross-bred with brown eyes. Both dogs have lived with children and are happy around other dogs.

Stephanie continued:

“They are stunning dogs and we would love to see them come out of kennels and into a new home – we just need to find the right one .”

Are you a gay man aged over 65?

WEB.600There will soon be large numbers of older HIV-positive gay men requiring care in the UK. Currently, very little is known about their health and care needs.

It also wants to compare the views of older HIV-positive gay men to their HIV-negative peers.

If you are a gay man aged over 65 the researcher wants to hear from you.

You will be asked to confidentially share your HIV-status and to have a one-off, hour long interview with a researcher to discuss health and social care concerns.
