Village Spartans RFC
Manchester Village Spartans RUFC

Manchester Village Spartans RUFC, the North West’s only gay and inclusive rugby club is topping the league table. The team is eying promotion from Raging Bull North West Leagues Division 5  to a higher league after an impressive start to the season so far.

The team has continued to go from strength to strength since hosting the Bingham Cup in June 2012. The Bingham Cup, otherwise known as the Gay Rugby World Cup which is one of the largest international rugby union tournaments in the world, and is held every two years.

In total, 37 Teams from Australia, and across North America and Europe competed, with the 2012 competition won by the Sydney Convicts who will host the tournament in 2014.

The Village Spartans also announced recently that they will continue their partnership with Pure Gym after agreeing an extension to their headline sponsorship deal until 2014. Pure Gym have sponsored the team since the start of 2011/2012 season and were major sponsors of the 2012 Bingham Cup.

The sponsorship package will see Pure Gym continue to provide financial backing to the Spartans that will be invested in top-level coaching, new equipment and improved playing facilities.  In addition to the financial support, Pure Gym is also providing kit, including all weather training jackets, water bottles and sports bags and regular use of Pure Gym’s 24 hour facilities in Manchester.

The Village Spartans intend to travel to Sydney in 2014 to compete in the 7th Bingham Cup, and the support of Pure Gym and other sponsors will be invaluable in assisting the club to field a team in Australia.

Matt Whiteley, Chairman of  Village Spartans, said:

“Our partnership with Pure Gym brings together two organisations that are committed to improving health and fitness in the communities we operate in.  Their support means we can improve a number of aspects of the rugby club and ensure that more people can play rugby and enjoy being part of the Spartans.  The partnership with Pure Gym is already proving beneficial, with the 1st team currently placed 2nd in its league and the club now regularly fielding a 2nd team, for the first time in its history.”

Landlord’s consent granted to new Pride organisers

Landlord’s consent has been granted by Brighton & Hove Council to a new community grouping (CIC) headed up by Paul Kemp from Aeon Events, DJ Dulcie Danger and David Hill from E3 Entertainment Group to be the ‘Guardians’ and organisers of Pride 2013.

This year’s main event takes place at Preston Park on Saturday, August 3 and the Pride celebrations will include a two week LGBT Arts & Film Festival and the traditional Village Party on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4.

Norman Cook, International superstar DJ and recording artist, has pledged his support to the new Pride organisers. David Hill from E3 Entertainments Group has also agreed to sit on a financial scrutiny board along side Tony Chapman owner of Legends and David Calderhead owner of the Amsterdam Hotel to oversee ticket sales and make sure that local organisations receive £1 a head from every ticket sold which will be given to good causes.

Trevor Edwards has brought his skills to the new organisation after working with the owners of Stagfleet on last year’s successful event.

Paul Kemp, Dulcie Danger and David Hill have said they are delighted to be the ‘Guardians’ of this important event that is so essential to the LGBT community, businesses, LGBT organisations and the city.

Taking over the reins of such an iconic festival can be tricky but the ‘Guardians’ have made a point of listening to the public, businesses and the feedback from Pride 2012 to bring about positive solutions to flagged up concerns such as ticket purchasing, numbers of toilets and queues on Preston Park.

Pride is fully committed to engaging with the wider community for 2013 and the upcoming festival will cover a broader spectrum of events than ever before. New features will include an LGBT Film Festival, Arts Festival, improved winter pride and cultural events, rather than being focused on just the park festival and club nights alone.

The ‘Guardians’ of Pride recognise that the festival must play an all year round role in promoting the LGBT community and businesses, support local good causes and generally promote the city.

They will be regularly consulting with businesses and the community to ensure that Pride is reflective of the multi-faceted and diverse community that is Brighton & Hove.

Hove MP champions new consumer freedoms

Amendments are about to be made by the Government to UK copyright law, which allows people to legally make digital copies of music, films and eBooks for personal use.

The alterations range from education and news reporting to parody, caricature and pastiche, as well as archiving. The changes could contribute at least £500m to the UK economy over 10 years, and perhaps much more from reduced costs, increased competition and by making copyright works more valuable.

For more information on the changes, click here:

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has been championing the importance of Intellectual Property rights since his election to Parliament.

He said:

“Most people would agree that is was a bit ridiculous that the law has been so slow to catch up with technology, so this is a positive step in the right direction. I do have reservations with research and parody exemptions, but otherwise this is a good update to Britain’s copyright laws.”
