Dúhový (Rainbow) Pride will take place in Bratislava on May 22 – the very first event of this kind in Slovakia, which is the last EU country that has not yet held a Pride parade.

A spokesman for the event said:
"Pride is celebration of authentic identities of people regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. 'Rainbow' signifies colourfulness, diversity and variety of  LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people and the fact that they are an integral part of every society – including Slovak society.

"Rainbow Pride Bratislava 2010 is an important step towards the visibility of lesbian and gay people in the public space. Pride is celebration of who we are, our identities, our presence and our civic participation in Slovak society. Pride is also a march for true equality for LGBT people with legal recognition for same-sex couples and the possibility for adoptions and assisted reproduction.

"The event is designed not only for LGBT people and their families and friends but also anyone who values an open society and the concept of human rights for each individual. In addition to the parade through the centre of Bratislava there will be a concert and various other accompanying events."
