The European Union is to modernise and harmonise justice, security, human rights and home affairs under its Stockholm Programme.

Although it hopes to standardise practise on such issues as immigration and data protection, there is no mention of improving the status of civil partnerships. Nor is there any mention of making civil partnerships recognised throughout Europe as a whole.

An EU official talking about civil partnership recognition said:
"For the moment it is not a priority."
