Georgia voters have elected Simone Bell to the Georgia State House, making her the first openly lesbian African-American state legislator in U.S. history.  Atlanta voters elected Alex Wan, making him the city's first openly gay man and first Asian-American member of the city council.

Both candidates were endorsed by The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, the campaigning organisation which helps gay and lesbian people achieve public office.
Lesbian candidate Annise Parker is hoping to be the next mayor of Houston, Texas.

A spokesman for the Victory Fund said:
"On December 12, Annise Parker will compete in a runoff election to become the next mayor of Houston, Texas.  I hope you'll join with us to help make that happen.

"Annise is under attack from right-wing, anti-gay bigots who desperately fear the message her election will send.  It's not hard to understand why.  If Annise wins, it will mean Houstonians are fair-minded.  It will mean they appreciate honesty and openness.  It will mean they judge a person based on her experience and commitment, and nothing else.  That scares the heck out of the extremists, and it should."
