Queer in the U.S.A. is a new solo play written and performed by Manuel Simons as part of The Camden Fringe.

Johnny, a teenager from New Jersey, hungers to follow in the footsteps of his hero – Bruce Springsteen. The only problem is his soprano voice sounds more like Barbra Streisand than The Boss. He struggles against homophobia at school, even while his own sense of identity is uncertain. Facing brutal rejection from the Freehold High School Glee Club, Johnny journeys to New York City where lovers, rockers and gypsies challenge him to live out loud.

He retraces Springsteen’s early career footsteps, hoping to mold himself into the image of his rock god. Does Johnny have what it takes to rock it out like The Boss? Eight colorful characters, all played by Manuel Simons, inhabit this "poignant and provocative" story about becoming your own idol. Cincinnati Magazine called it a "must-see!"

The play runs from Thursday 12 to Sunday August 15 at The Etcetera Theatre, 265 Camden High Street, London. Performances start at 10.30pm.
