Taking on a production so strongly associated with a film littered with stars can be a tricky business. Thankfully Worthing Light opera Company have chosen not to attempt a Hollywood showpiece and have instead successfully concentrated on the tale of manipulative women and meat-headed men.

Veryan Jennings as Dolly Levi is really pretty darn good in such a demanding role. She exudes the required unshakeable confidence in spades, moving elegantly around the stage dispensing no-nonsense, rapid-fire advice while covering every angle in her quest to win the hand of Horace Vandergelder, the gruff, wealthy businessman played ably by Alan Pennels. Both negotiate their numbers with finesse, especially Jennings, who shows such a sure touch throughout that you never doubt she will get her man. Pennels for his part is suitably aloof and grumpy throughout, and while there may be one harumph too many, thats better than one too few.

The supporting cast all leave their mark; Jonathan Wardle as Cornelius Hackl veers manically between desire and fear in his quest for a life - and love - beyond work, comically accompanied by Will Bone playing Barnaby tucker. The female company they seek on their adventure in New York comes courtesy of solid performances by Sally Campbell and Alison Booker as Irene and Minnie respectively.

The chorus packs in pretty much every demopgraphic you can shake a stick at, and blend well in the big favourites. When it comes to the more choreographed numbers the younger members come to the fore and show off nimble sets of pins, although I did note a bit of an obsession with high kicks that on occasion threatened the light bulbs.

While this is not a seamless production, it's a hugely enjoyable show whose minor glitches serve to endear rather than damn. The staging inventively manages the frequent changes, and while the six piece band sound a bit sparse in places, its not something that warrants an inquisition.

All in all a recommended night out revisiting an old classic.
