Residents are being asked what they think about subsidised bus services in Brighton & Hove.
The city council is talking to residents about all the services it helps to fund so that new contracts reflect what communities want from their public transport routes.
Many contracts come to an end in September and new contracts will be let for four years. Any bus operator will be able to participate in the tender process for these services.
Brighton & Hove City Council plans and funds a number of bus services which are not commercially viable but which provide a vital link for communities. Some of the routes run from outlying areas into the city centre, some run at weekends and evenings and others are school buses.
The council’s transport team has written to over 300 interested residents and community organisations, and full details of all the council-funded services are available on the travel & transport part of the website: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1000802
Councillor Ian Davey, cabinet member for transport and the public realm, said:
“We want to hear from as many people as possible, both bus users and those who currently don’t use this form of transport, especially in the areas covered by our subsidised services.
“Taking the bus is incredibly popular in the city and we want to make sure that the services are reaching people and provide a service that works for them.”
Councillor Gill Mitchell, Leader of the Labour and Co-operative Group, said:
“We
will be on the look-out for any cuts to bus services by the Green
Council as part of their review. Labour has successfully stopped
threatened cuts to bus services over the past two years and we want to
ensure that adequate services will still run in areas of the city where
people depend on them, such as outlying areas and services to schools
and colleges.
“We
are also querying why such an important consultation is being carried
out over the summer, when many people will be unavailable.”
