Tories challenge Greens to come clean over which libraries opening hours will be cut

Councillor Vanessa Brown, Brighton & Hove City Council’s Conservative Group Spokesperson on Culture, Recreation and Tourism, has challenged the Green Administration to come clean over which libraries will have their opening hours reduced as a result of their proposed budget cuts.

The Green Administration has proposed as part of their Budget proposals
cuts of £149,000 to the library service for next year including unspecified reductions in opening hours and the abolition of the mobile library service.

Cllr. Brown will be asking the Green Cabinet Member, Cllr. Geoffrey Bowden, to give residents further details of his Administration’s plans at the forthcoming Full Council meeting on January 26.

Cllr. Brown said:
“When we were in Administration we made it a priority to protect frontline library services. Indeed, we extended opening hours, including introducing Sunday opening at the Jubilee Library, delivered the fantastic new library at Whitehawk and drove forward plans for a state of the art new library at Woodingdean.

"The Greens now need to come clean about their intentions. Which libraries will have their opening hours cut and by how much? What will happen to community and homework clubs which take place in the affected libraries?

"What will happen to the many elderly and vulnerable people who rely upon the mobile library service to get their books?

When they were in opposition, the Greens were always very vociferous campaigners for protecting libraries – now that they are in power, it seems that their words of support are starting to ring hollow.”
