MindOUT, Brighton’s LGBT Mental health charity, invites everyone to join them on a walk of solidarity to end discrimination and stigma towards LGBT people who have mental health issues.
The annual Stamp Out Stigma walk is today, Saturday October 8, 2011.
Meet at Brighton Pier at 11.30am in your most outrageous footwear for a colourful walk along Brighton seafront, as part of World Mental Health Day and Time to Get Moving Week.
Walkers will be accompanied by a samba band and dancers from the Pier to the Peace Statue where prizes for the most outrageous footwear will be awarded.
Mental health matters and physical exercise can make a big difference to our well being. A short walk by the sea will leave you feeling refreshed, energised and ready to tackle stigma wherever you meet it!
Green Party Councillors and members will march against stigma attached with mental health issues tomorrow as part of World Mental Health Day. The event will feature a walk from Brighton’s Palace Pier to the Peace Statue at Hove Lawns.[1]

Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion said:
“Historically LGBT people have suffered appalling treatment at the hands of the authorities, while many have been especially stigmatised by the inclusion of trans people on the Psychiatric Disorder Register– something that the Green Party would change through a re-write the Mental Health Act. I would like to express solidarity with everyone marching on Saturday; we must fight to end discrimination and to condemn the stigma which blights too many lives in the LGBT community.”
Cllr Phelim Mac Cafferty, National Spokesperson of LGBTGreens added:
“The Count Me in Too Survey starkly highlighted that a majority of LGBT people in Brighton and Hove have experienced some form of mental health difficulty with nearly a quarter having suicidal thoughts and 7% attempting suicide in the last 5 years.
“This is why it is so important to stand up in public and say that we will march together against discrimination and together we will stamp out the stigma which wrecks lives. The Green Party are proud to show our support.”
