News that the minority Green Administration on Brighton & Hove City Council are increasing burial charges by up to 400% from £123 to £500 for a single burial and for a Lawn Grave Right of Burial from £118 to £410 have been met with anger by the Labour and Co-Op group on the city council.
Brighton & Hove Labour & Co-operative Deputy Leader, Councillor Warren Morgan, said:
“These are charges which sadly everyone has to pay at some point when a family member dies and their wish is to be buried rather than cremated. The Greens are looking to make money via what is in effect a ‘death tax’ from people at a time when they are most distressed, it is appalling.”
“This is yet another example of Greens wishing to push through their ideological policies, in this case deterring traditional burials, through massive increases in taxation. These enormous rises cannot be accounted for through claims that rates have not been increased for a couple of years.”
The rises form part of the Green’s first Budget which also include rises of over 100% in trader parking permits and significant rises in other parking fees.
